As part of our walking day-trip to Kulusuk, we hiked up the hill to the cemetery. The observations from other travelers is on point - nameless white crosses preserve that person's name for another member of the family. The ruggedness of the terrain is obvious...More

Right on the road in the village, very small area. No names on most of the graves. A New cemetery is now further out from the village.

If you slog along the dusty track from Kulusuk town to Kulusuk airport (it's a good 30-45 minute hike) you'll pass this old cemetery on your way just outside the town limits, facing the sea. It's a simple graveyard with white wooden crosses rather than...More

No names...just white crosses. That's what the cemetery markers look like! And lots of colorful plastic flowers, because...well. It is Greenland, after all. In the tradition of the People, no one is to say the deceased person's name, because in the spirit may become confused...More

As a previous reviewer said, not having names on the grave markers made it fairly unique. A person's name never dies. What a great way to remember people.

If you walk from the hotel to the village, you'll see this at the roadside. It's mostly white wooden crosses (Christian missionaries converted the population in the late 1800s, wiping out the traditional religious practices of the inuits).

Everyone who dies in this village over the last several decades is buried in these cemeteries. We even witnessed a funeral procession coming into one of the cemeteries. It is definitely worth a visit.

Whilst it is a sad place, the cemetery is just 5 minutes from the hotel and is interesting to visit, it is well maintained and has flowers and good keeping facilities

In Greenland, the cemeteries are unique. There are not any names on the graves. They believe the soul carries on so do not mark a place of someone's death with their name. Also, in Greenland it is almost impossible to grow flowers, so the graves...More
