We took a day trip with Maggi of LocalGuide. Is, trekking the glacier. He was incredible and the terrain out of this world stunning. We trekked, ice climbed some smaller cliffs, walked a ridge, went down a moulin, and walked a glacial river with a mini-waterfall....More

The parking spot is at a small toilet house but the suspension bridge is out. You can continue on the road (very bumpy) for another 15 minutes (very slow drive) and arrive at another parking spot. Here there is a loosely marked trail with rocks...More

Of you travel along the Ring-Road you see pretty much of the Glacier. You can reach many of its tongues by a short foot-Walk. That is impressive! But don‘t be dissappointed by the sometimes black covered ice (it is the ash of the vulcanoes).

The glacier is in the sprawling national park of the same name. It is always a wonder wherever you see glaciers in the world, all the more so these days with the effects of global warming. The glacier has over thirty tongues. What makes it...More

This was our 2nd glacier hike, but just as thrilling and much different from the 1st. We hiked with Glacier Adventure. The staff and guide were very friendly and helpful. On this hike we were able to spread out and walk around a bit mor...More

I took a glacier climb in the Vatnajokull National park and was thrilled by the experience and the scenic beauty of the Vatnajokull glacier. With crampons, ice axe and a very experienced leader, I managed something I thought impossible and was able to appreciate the...More

The only mistake you'll make in visiting Vatnajokull is not spending more time in the park. A number of great trails, waterfalls and other glacier experiences. One of Icelands Gems!

What a spectacular experience. We hiked the glacier with a small group and our guide was great. She gave us good information throughout the hike and shared some personal experiences. The glacier was breathtaking, I don't think I have done anything remotely awesome to this...More

Yes it's open all year round given that it is a glacier; the ice never disappears though it is retreating every year.
