We were in Hayden Valley the 2nd week of September 2018 arriving at daylight. The bull elk were bugling at multiple locations in the valley. It was amazing. We could see some of the elk across the valley. Others we could hear but not see....More

Hayden Valley is often blessed with many buffalo. If it is a rare day when you do not see them. But if you do not, then simply head north over to Lamar Valley where buffalo abound.

This valley is like a tranquil area away from madness. Yes there are areas of geothermal bits and bobs but this reminded me of grasslands near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Bison a plenty just roving out - even saw one running full...More

When planning this trip this was number 5 on the top 10 on Trip Advisor. To me it should be in the top 5 because of the opportunity to see Elk, Buffalo and Antalope. The vistas are outstanding.

Probably more stunning in scenery than Lamar and nearly as good for wildlife, it's a must. It also has some geothermal activity. If you want to experience a bison jam, they normally occur along this road. It's particularly lovely at sunrise and sunset.

Not as visually appealing as the Lamar Valley (especially driving east in Lamar), but the meandering river and buffalo are worth the drive. Also, the valley is steeper than Lamar with a different feel, so don't feel that if you drove one you seen them...More

I would imagine that the best viewing times are early morning and dusk when their prey is also active. Keep in mind that September, being later in the season, is possibly when bears are getting ready for hibernation... More
