We visited this in the early evening and hardly saw any people. I think this is a little out of the way from the larger YNP attractions, so the area is a hidden gem. You should put it on your to-do list to see some...More

The Firehole River runs through Yellowstone National Park across the Upper Geyser Basin between Grand Prismatic Spring and Old Faithful. The river was named by early explorers because of the steam that makes it appear to be smoking like it was on fire. The water...More

This is a nice 2 mile drive along a beautiful river. In early June when we were there, it was closed to swimming as the water was VERY high. But there is lots of great geology to see as well as the gorgeous rushing river.

The Park has a few of these side roads to explore and each is well worth it. Even in early June, it was hard to find parking -- go early.

You can not but stare at the savage nature of this River. It has carved a rugged canyon through hard rock and it has done a magnificent job. I have traveled this Park since 1964 and I still come to the Firehole River first.

Great way to get away from the crowd with no traffic. We saw geysers and lovely pools without waiting in line.

The narrow side road, a few miles long, gives you the best views of the river in its canyon setting. Otherwise, there are nice views elsewhere of the river out in the plains.

I may be mistaken, but as far as I know swimming is not allowed anywhere within the park. Having last visited in February, swimming was not on my agenda anyway.
