The Firehole River runs through Yellowstone National Park across the Upper Geyser Basin between Grand Prismatic Spring and Old Faithful.
The river was named by early explorers because of the steam that makes it appear to be smoking like it was on fire.
This is a nice 2 mile drive along a beautiful river. In early June when we were there, it was closed to swimming as the water was VERY high. But there is lots of great geology to see as well as the gorgeous rushing river.
You can not but stare at the savage nature of this River. It has carved a rugged canyon through hard rock and it has done a magnificent job. I have traveled this Park since 1964 and I still come to the Firehole River first.
This loop road is off the main road north of Old Faithful Village. It was so cool that we did it twice! It is a one way road with many springs and geysers. Great Fountain Geyser erupted while we were there. It's spectacular. Also Hot...More
