OK we did not quite get up here, read about this online and followed the GPS, however found signs it was closed at a certain point and the GPS also showed the park itself as closed. As we drove up Tantalus Drive, lots of pullover spots were full of what appeared to be Hawaiian youth drinking - lots of trucks and beer, etc. Since it was dusk, we drove up but were a little leary about the closure at the top and being stuck there in the dark, plus not being familiar with the area, we turned around on a one lane residential road and headed back down. The few pull out spots we did manage to pull over and score some wonderful sunset photos from as I'm sure while they were amazing, I'm guessing nowhere near amazing than if we made up to the top.

We went up to Tantalus with some friends to watch the sunset from a different perspective than the ocean views we've done earlier.

The viewpoint gives a great look at Diamond Head, Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, the Honolulu Airport and the West Oahu mountains.

There was a nice rainbow as we were leaving.

Take a drive up to Makiki Heights to experience winding Tantalus Drive and the views from Pu'u Ualaka'a wayside. You'll be out of town quickly and into lush, beautiful surroundings with great views of the city and the coast. The higher you go, the better it gets. You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll feel you've left the city and entered a troplical jungle.
Note: The road is sometimes closed for repairs at the higher level.

We rode up to the lookout via Uber and brought some eats with us to enjoy as we watched the sun go down over Oahu far above the island. You could see everything on the west side of the island...Waikiki, Diamond Head, Honolulu.

Make sure you have a good map when you go up Tantulus. There is no straight way up and the road twists and turns but it is a fun drive and at the top you have a view of Honolulu and Waikiki that is breathtaking. If you continue down the road you will end up on Punchbowl and that leads you to the Pacific Cemetery.
Do this on a clear day with the sun shining although some clouds would make it interesting especially as sunrise or sunset.

Drive up Round Top Drive to Pu'u 'Ualaka'a State Park to the summit where you find the Tantalus Lookout. Spectacular views on the entirety of Honolulu stretching from Diamond Head and across the city. Try to go on a nice day when the sky is blue and the sun is shining. The drive up takes about 15 minutes. I went around 11am on a Sunday morning and had no problems finding a parking spot. Hardly any others there at that time. Apparently, this is a favorite spot for car break ins so don't leave valuables visible, but I had no issues.

A long steep drive but worth it. You get a view of the entire Diamond Head cone. The little lawn area in front of the lookout was a scene from an Elvis Presley movie. You also get to see some beautiful homes perched on the mountain side.

Better to have a car as taking Bus 5, you will need to walk another an hour or so uphill (depending on individual's stamina) along a residential area, and some stretch can be pretty quiet.

I also understand, e-hailing cars can get us there but to get one to return, would be a challenge provided you ask the driver to wait for you.

The panaromic view from a 1048ft hill is definitely fabulous and amazing.

Ok, how have I lived here 30+ years and just found out about this place?? Maybe because I'm not a teenager looking for a place to hook up or a tourist wanting to take a picture... That being said, it's the PERFECT place to take a beautiful photo overlooking all of Honolulu / Waikiki!! Sunset is perfect! Also, as a side note, if you drive just a smidge past the entrance to the lookout, you will find a hidden swing in the middle of what looks like a tropical forest. Another great spot to take pics!
P.S. I noticed a lot of tourists taking pictures on the way UP TO the actual lookout. Not sure if they THOUGHT they were in the right place so they pulled over and started snapping photos or maybe no one told them to drive UP TO THE ACTUAL lookout (you will know you're there when you see a parking lot with a gate and a sign showing there "open for business hours"

Great views. Wasn’t crowded at all. If you park in the larger lot there is a short trail to the lookout. There is also a very small lookout parking lot. Signs for theft but we had no issues. There are restrooms as well. No one was there to pay for parking nor did I see any signs requiring it.
