- Sarah IWauchula, Florida184 contributionsGreat views on a fun hike! This was a great afternoon hike. It wasn’t too difficult- there were a wide range of ages and families on the trail. There are multiple spots to stop alonn the way to take pictures of the views. Take water, wear some sturdy shoes, and use sunscreen/hat/sunglasses because it was sunny! You do need to make a reservation ahead of time. We used Uber to get there and get a ride back into town. I’d say this is a must-do activity if visiting the area!Visited December 2022Traveled with friendsWritten December 25, 2022
- Larry LiuBaotou, China14 contributionsBreathtaking sceneryAbsolutely magnificent and beautiful. The view is so beautiful that I am mesmerized. The sea reflects fifty shades of blue under the Honolulu sunshine. You see the city blends with the nature organically! Definitely visit here if you are the first time in Honolulu! Remember to book the reservation in advance. Take bus 23 here if you don't have a car! 绝佳的景观,令人窒息的魅力。海面在阳光下闪着粼粼波光,城市与自然完美结合。所有旅客的必来之地。完美的体验!Visited December 2022Traveled soloWritten December 27, 2022
- janetc757570 contributionsIncredible views!I booked a time slot for 6-8 am and arrived shortly after 6 to get parking. The hike was perfect as the sun was just starting to rise making it not too hot. The views from the top were absolutely incredible and the hike really wasn't too strenuous. It had rained, so some spots of the trail had standing water or were muddy and thus slippery, but it wasn't too bad. Those steps to the peak were no joke though! Definitely book ahead of time so you get the entry time you want!Visited April 2023Traveled soloWritten April 7, 2023
- Second_City_TravelerChicago, Illinois259 contributionsYou should do this hike during your visit! It’s easy to get swept up in shopping, the beach, dining at nice restaurants, etc. while visiting Honolulu. Don’t let an unbelievable hike leading to a fantastic view of the city pass you by, though. Diamond Head crater is within walking distance of downtown (albeit a lengthy walk at about 3 miles). I wanted a day of activity, though, and decided to walk there from a downtown hotel — thinking that I would either Uber or bus it on the return trip. The hike up to the peak takes approximately 45 minutes (it’s quicker on the way down - probably 30 minutes). If you brought hiking shoe/boots, I’d recommend wearing them as there are definitely uneven parts to the path. The view from the top is spectacular. Definitely worth a visit during your stay here.Visited May 2023Traveled soloWritten April 30, 2023
- Tierra WBuffalo, New York28 contributionsDiamond Head Hiking ExperienceThis was my first hiking experience. Please wear sunscreen, bring water, sunglasses and wear good sneakers. The trail is a mix of stairs, rough terrain a few inclines/hills and there is a short tunnel/cave you have to go through. At times the path is narrow so be mindful of two way traffic. There are pit stops along the way that allow for rest and beautiful pics. Once you make it to the top the views are breathtaking.Visited May 2023Traveled with friendsWritten May 16, 2023
- Charles LEffingham, Illinois17 contributionsClimbing Diamond Head Crater AdventureOur three families decided to climb Diamond Head Crater. We took Ubers to get there. The climb is not for the faint of heart. The pathways are partially slick lava flows that are uneven and treacherous. There are lots of switchbacks for easier climbing. At the top, you can take the switchbacks and still get to the summit. The more challenging way is to climb 99 steps to the summit. We chose the switchbacks.Visited June 2023Written July 22, 2023
- AuroraSeraphinaCanada698 contributionsBreathtaking! Worth it!!Hubby, our 5-year-old and I hiked up Diamond Head during our vacation and it was totally worth it. Had booked the 8 AM slot as read all the recommendations about heading out early to avoid the unforgiving sun and we were glad we did. I was so sure our toddler would give up and we would just have to call it a day but perseverance and a slow pace meant we accomplished our goal. So many passerbys were proud of him and we were beaming with pride once we hit the summit. Truly beautiful photo ops on the way up and down. Pack your sun hats, water bottles (there’s a refill station by the washrooms) and towel (thank goodness for baby wipes!), wear sunscreen, something breathable and good walking shoes (we didn’t use hiking shoes and were fine) and enjoy!Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 25, 2023
- AeronauticalEngineerIrvine, California1,767 contributionsGreat views from the topDiamond Head is worth it for the amazing views. But it's a hike!!!! Make sure you have good walking shoes on, keep a bottle of water and are in good shape to make the climb. It takes about 30 minutes to hike up the mountain and it is unpaved, uneven, and rocky. There are no restrooms on top or any water fountains along the way up. We did see parents with kids making this hike as well. The hike up is worth the views Once you're on top. Beautiful panoramic views of Honolulu. You need reservations go get into the park and you need to pay for parking. You can book online. Again, good walking shoes and stay hydrated...!!!!Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 1, 2023

Diamond head is the perfect location for introducing people to hiking and whilst a challenge due to the heat, the actual incline is not an issue. At the summit, there is stunning views of the Honolulu sea front and makes the long journey to Hawaii worthwhile. I am aware that people attempt to reach the summit prior to sunset and it must be a stunning sight to see. It is important to note that since Covid, you are require to book a spot rather than just turn up. There is a small charge to visit, but it is certainly worth it. I also had the pleasure of running around Diamond Head on a number of occasions and it was an excellent run.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 15, 2023

Walk starts out easy on a concrete path but soon turns into uneven natural path. There are narrow places, a lot of stairs and the incline is enough to know your alive. But, once you make it to the top the views are amazing and the breeze is welcome. Please don't attempt this walk if you aren't reasonably fit or on walking aids. There are signs before you start warning that it's a hard walk. Oh, and leave your little kids behind unless you can carry them as it's not fair to make their little legs walk that far

Great experience. Online reservations required for park entry but are super easy to get on the website in advance of the visit.
From Waikiki east t I get to base or trek either by walking (about 45-50min), cab, rental car (need to reserve parking) or Green Trolley which is a great ride and what we did.
Hike is well posted and takes about 40min (perhaps 50 min if you go when crowds are building) to get to the top. Would advise you go as easily as possible to maximise experience with smaller crowds and before it gets to hot.
I did the hike with an 11 year old and 8yr old and they coped easily. Saw some younger kids as well but would say would be tough for kids 5 and under.
Ground on way up can be a bit tricky as surface is not even but very manageable and would just make sure you wear joggers or don’t try and do in flip flops.
Great view from the top. Only downside is the “peak” is small and can get crowded especially with all the posers needing to take 1000 different photos in different poses for Instagram - generally inconsiderate, take a quick snap and let others also get on with the day.

The hike was pretty steep. The stairs hard on your knees. But the views were spectacular.
Take plenty of water.

Is this walk safe for two 70 year olds?

It depends on your level of fitness/stability on uneven surfaces. The beginning of the hike is a very easy to walk trail but there are rockier parts as you move along. The stairs are tougher to climb but there are handrails and you can take rests on the way. There were people half your ages having to rest along the trail!

We are visiting in Late August with a 18mth old and 11,and 8 year old boys. We feel the hike is not suitable for us, but would like to see this site. Is there any point to visiting if not doing the hike up. Is there nice park facilities or other nice areas of interest to spend time at here. Or do we give this area a miss?
Thank you

I did see kids with parents hiking Diamond Head. I did see people wearing shoes that is better worn at the shopping complex. To some it is a moderate hike, to some it is an easy hike. I guess just go if you happen to bring your kid for regular hikes but if not, better don't. Nothing much to do at the base. But before you entering the tunnel to Diamond Head's car park, there is a public park that you can jog.

Has anyone done this with young children, aged 4. I don't think the walking is a problem for him but thinking about the safety issues.
Thanks!

Like most travelers who have answered this. The main issue or concern you have, would be is my child safe walking up this track? My answer is Yes. Its about slow & steady. At certain areas of this track there are handrails to help everyone up or down the stairs or around corners, so make sure you know where your feet are. The terrain can be a little tough but to be generally honest your pacing yourself & keeping an eye on your young fella all the way. My son & I climbed this and hes 9 years old. I have seen younger children walking this track & they do get tired. Be prepared to carry him part of the way as long as you pace yourself he might surprise you and get up there without too much hassle. With all young children i agree there are some safety issues but that's with all parents walking any track anywhere. I did carried some plasters just in case, with the usual water drinks and small snacks for energy. Take a hat and some sunscreen. The track is roughly 1.3km in length but its mostly up. Wear shoes. enjoy.

What is the best way to get from the Hilton Village to the beginning of the trail without a car? Don't mind a bit of a walk before the trail. Thanks

14 min 3.2 miles or 5.5km via Kalakaua Ave and Monsarrat Ave. It is a drive not walk.
All kinds of transport options there. Check local bus services. The name of the local buses are 'TheBus" , they go everywhere, costs about $2 to ride anywhere.
