Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

On our coastal ride with a rented Harley Davidson, the Makapu'u lighthouse was one of the amazing stops we had. The trail along the coast is sensational and if at all possible, a must see.

My favorite hike on the island of Oahu for several reasons. It is easy to find. It is an easy hike at about 3 miles round trip. The views from the top are always special. In the spring whale sitings occur up on top.

Our son lives in Hawaii and we have photos of the lighthouse hanging in our home on the mainland that Bob took, so it was a natural to see the real thing. The drive and the shoreline along this part of Oahu is really awesome,...More

We hiked a lot near Honolulu, but this was our favorite. It was a paved hike with a lot of overlooks along the way. Gorgeous views and a beautiful lighthouse!

Well maintained sealed pathway the entire way to the top. Great views at the top and a few short paths off to the side to explore along the way. Roughly 4km roundtrip. Kid friendly.

Not that hard a walk since they put in the even walkway. But the views are excellent if you take your eyes off the trail. I have, on many occasions, seen whales traveling by and even breaching in the sun. Worth the time.

Beautiful paved trail. Entire way to top is Scenic- we really enjoyed this. It was longer than I initially thought and is gradual incline the whole way to the lookout. Very do-able though, the only thing would maybe have been doing it earlier in the...More

Paved path which is a plus but man is it steep. I’m not in great shape and had to stop a lot. It is literally straight up for most of the hike. Make sure to bring water and have sunscreen/hat. There are no bathrooms so...More

Absolutely. There’s a lookout point with binoculars where you can challenge them if they can spot the whales

Yes, the trail from the parking lot to the light house viewing is paved; its uphill and not too steep and strollers should be quite possible.
