About
This protected marine life conservation area, named after its unique curved bay, is a popular snorkeling spot in Hawaii. Formed within a volcanic cone on the eastern side of Oahu, this marine sanctuary is home to vibrant marine life and well-preserved corals. There is a limited number of visitors allowed in the bay daily, so make a reservation in advance to secure your spot. It's also closed on certain days so remember to check before you go. You can rent snorkeling equipment here—all you have to do is remember to pack some reef-safe sunscreen.
Some tours of the North Shore also stop by the bay for a quick photo opportunity.

- David R16 contributionsExcellent snorkeling for family - a must for kids. Leave time for parking.Beautiful snorkeling spot. Saw lots of fish. Wonderful time with family. Great for kids. People go into this with unrealistic expectations. The only annoying thing was the long parking line which is created by people with later reservations, getting to the park much earlier than their designated time. For the easiest experience, I'd suggest getting there very late in the day, or first thing in the morning. To easily get a reservation, you should also create a profile in advance and be logged in right when 7am hits. The park itself though is mind blowingly beautiful and the best snorkeling is on the left side (while facing the water). This has been my favorite part of our whole trip so far.Visited December 2022Written December 29, 2022
- amankiewiczChicago, Illinois157 contributionsGreat snorkeling. Ignore the common complaints.Yes, tickets are hard to get. Parking is rough. Go in with those expectations. The snorkeling is awesome. There are a ton of fish and turtles to see. Even though we got rained upon, it was a great time. Would definitely go back.Visited January 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 4, 2023
- Aly MarieRegina, Canada8 contributionsSchools of Fish!We visited in 2019. The reef didn’t have a lot of fish but was still very fun to snorkel. Fast forward to 2023. New booking process makes it really difficult to secure a reservation but we tried every day until we got one as they restrict the number of visitors now. The reef is amazing! Schools of fish and so many varieties. Kids (age 9, 11, 15) had loved it. It poured rain so we only stayed 2hrs. Keep trying for that reservation as it is SO worth it!Visited January 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 5, 2023
- Pheapa K6 contributionsGorgeousSet ur alarm to book it right at 6:55 Hawaiian time. N get urself ready to book right at 7am. Best 2 days ahead cause u can reserve 2 days ahead. Do ur profile ahead of time. It will sell out in minutes. BUT totally worth it. Bring ur snorkel gear. U will see several variety of fish even just 6 ft from shore. Got nervous cause lineup to get in was long but maybe it’s just cause slow drivers can’t choose a parking spot??? Cause when we got in there was so much parking. Staff is great in giving u the rules which u do want to fully respect. It is a reserve. Every angle of the place is gorgeous. If ur not gonna snorkel wear water shoes while swimming. Try ur best not to touch the reefs. Don’t forget to bring snorkel defogger or just spit in ur goggles n rinse quickly n lightly with the salt water when ur goggles get foggy. We even tied a hammock between the trees for the lil one to sleep. One of our best days on the islandVisited January 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 22, 2023
- RJLS4 contributionsWorth it!I have to admit, I was very nervous that this would be a huge tourist trap. The reviews about buying tickets and parking made me nervous too. But I decided to go for it, and I’m so glad that I did! It was the highlight of our teenagers’ trip. Be sure to buy your tickets two days in advance, and be ready right at 7 AM with your credit card. The max number of tickets you can buy is five adults and five children. Snorkel gear on site costs $20 to rent per person. I think our biggest headache was when we arrived 20 minutes early and the parking lot was full. They don’t let anyone in until cars have left. I was very nervous that I would lose my money given all the bold red lettering about how you could lose your money if you don’t get there on time. Thankfully, spots opened up and we were fine. The bay itself was spectacular! The fish were just beautiful…. all different colors and sizes. My kids thoroughly enjoyed the few hours that we spent their snorkeling at their own leisure. And we were even surprised by a whale breaching in the ocean, just on the edge of the bay! Spectacular!Visited January 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 23, 2023
- Stacy StricklandSeattle, Washington931 contributionsOne of my favorite spots on the islandThe best snorkeling - especially in the winter when other beaches have too many waves. It was calm enough for my boyfriend to finally get the hang of snorkeling. There were so many unique fish, and the volume was amazing - we even saw schools of 50 at times. It's definitely worth getting up early to get tickets to enter the park!Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 29, 2023
- GavinLong Grove, Illinois30 contributionsBeautiful CoralSimply put, there’s a lot of coral that you shouldn’t touch. I would extremely recommend this spot. I encourage you to go snorkeling, we found many, many types of fish. Sadly, they close at 4 P.M. so don’t plan on staying here for long. Also, remember to make a reservation.Visited December 2022Traveled with familyWritten February 1, 2023
- shelley1cPerth, Australia99 contributionsThere wasnt muct to see below the surfaceAlthough the location is truly beautiful, we saw more fish snorkelling at other locations. We were there at low tide so there wasn't much space between the coral and the top of the water so maybe better to go at high tide. We purchased tickets online and they were all sold out with 5 minutes. make sure you are on the computer before 7am hawaiian time and start refreshing the computer! Parking was hard and we had to queue on the road for about 20 minutes before we were allowed in and we just made our allocated time slot of 12.15 I think if you had an earlier time it would be impossible to get parking as people wouldn't be leaving. We saw loads of humhumnukuhnukuapa'aVisited January 2023Written February 8, 2023
- BuddingWisdomBellevue, Washington66 contributionsVery shallow waters, tons of peopleWe had high expectations going in based on recommendations, but the waters were very shallow, making it difficult to navigate, even a little scary as you arent supposed to touch the coral/rocks. Diversity of fish was the best part. Most of the coral we saw was covered in a brown layer. We didnt spend as much time as we normally would due to the crowds, wind and lack of sun the day we went.Visited February 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 25, 2023
- Tracy F643 contributionsRelaxingThis is an amazing beach. It has a slight cost involved. However a great location for snorkeling and swimming. We had a unexpected visitor who just decided to join us. A seal took in some sun on the beach next to us. Great day.Visited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 25, 2023

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Hanauma Bay - almost 8 years I think. They’ve changed the rules a little bit. You have to get a time slot at 7am Hawaii time 2 days before your visit. Since we were going to fly from SF, I had a friend help us get the tickets. He told us that the tickets were already all gone within 5 minutes after release. There are about 35 tickets available per every 10 minute time slot, so it is a tight race. There are also only about 300 parking spots in the parking lot, so make sure you arrive with plenty of time to circle around for a spot if you’re driving. We arrived about 30 minutes before our time slot at 8:45am on a Thursday morning and were able to find a spot after one circle around the lot.
I do appreciate that they’re limiting the amount of people coming in at a time, as I can see it getting very crowded and hard to snorkel with tons of flippers in your face.
They have gear rentals - including prescription goggles, which was a huge win for me. I was able to go snorkeling without needing contacts! The water here is incredibly clear and also there are a ton of fish. It’s a lot of fun and a great spot for beginner snorkelers like us.

Very disappointed that you had to make a reservation and you could only make a reservation 2 days in advance. So I wasn't able to get in. I really wanted to snorkel here, but the reservation system didn't make that possible. And since I will probably never go back to Hawaii I missed my once in a lifetime opportunity.

Stunning and beautiful - just like Elvis who was here - which is why 60 of us came! We didn't go down on to the sand because it is quite steep and a bit of a way but we were happy up at the top looking down watching others enjoying the beauty of this place

Our third time here and we did enjoy the morning but it definitely didn’t have the same relaxed vibe as our previous two visits. Maybe going first thing in the morning was the problem as there were a lot of people waiting to be allowed in. You were given a ticket and had to wait for your numbers to be called just to join the queue. The staff managing this seemed a little fraught. It was like waiting to go on a Disney ride ha ha. Once inside things were calmer, but the beach was very busy, and the reefs looking tired and sad. We didn’t see a lot of sea life. If we are lucky enough to visit Oahu again we won’t bother with Hanauma Bay. That aside the views are beautiful so don’t let this review put you off if you haven’t been before.
They need to concentrate on the preservation of the bay and less on the tourism side.

A wonderful day of swimming, snorkeling and watching nature. Monk seal came on beach and the biologist was very good at explaining the monk seal’s place in the local ecosystem. Adults and children were enthralled by the explanations.

The first time we went to HB was in 2011, it was by far a much pleasanter experience back then. We also went in 2016, and whilst still good not quite as good as 2011! 2023: Getting in wasn’t great, too many people being sorted into categories. Staff were fraught and it didn’t have the calmness of the other visits. Numbers are restricted but it still felt very busy. We went snorkelling and didn’t see a lot of sea-life, the reefs looked grey and lifeless ( could have just been the area we were in). On a plus side the views are beautiful. Would we go again? No.

Hanauma bay snorkel:
1. Book early: booking opens 48 h ahead. Be ready to go to website and book exactly at that time. There are like 400 total spots around 30-40 every 10-15 min and they go fast. $25
2. Come early. For my 7:10 booking I was there 6:30
3. Earlier you come less the rush and more the fish
4. Parking for 300 spots opens 6:45 and line forms around 6:30 am and they go fast
5. $3 cash for parking
6. Leave extra time to adjust to their “rules” and system
7. So first you park, then you show your ID and confirmation email to check in. Then you hear verbal instructions for 10 min, then watch video 10 min then take tram down to beach. All good is upstairs. All rentals and showed are downstairs
8. Most people need 60-90 minutes then you are exhausted. You can take a break and relax on beach and go again or call it a day.
9. The water is pretty clear though not the clearest I’ve seen; I’m part it depends on the tides. It’s not perfectly calm but decent.
10. There are plenty of fish but not as great as some of the so called “best” snorkeling places.
11. You don’t really need tour companies unless you don’t want the hassle of booking yourself and driving and parking.

We went there again 30 years after going there on our honeymoon. It is still a very nice beach. But you have to be on the ball to get tickets. And we spent $100 for 4 of us to go to the beach.
This place used to be filled with fish and pretty corals. It was an amazing place… But it is sad to see the place now. There are hardly any fish any more and the corals are mostly dead.
If you are expecting the old snorkeling experience you will be very disappointed, but if you are more into the beach part it is still a very pretty spot.
The tickets seem to sell out every day so I expect the beach is still worth the visit to most people, but not to me.
Take the current warnings seriously as water can move pretty fast in the areas between the boys.

After reading dozens of reviews online, I was quite stressed about this experience. We had a 1200 time slot, but we arrived at 10:30 because I was so worried about parking. There were less than ten available spots in the lot when we pulled in. I’m not sure what we would have done if we arrived later. once you pack up your stuff, you head down to the line. An employee will ask what time your reservation is and then direct you to either the check in line, the wait line, or to sit on the grass. Although our time was for 1200, we got in early with just a short wait. After you wait in line to check in, you go to the next line where they pile you in a little area and someone makes a few announcements. Then you proceed to the video area. Then you finally get to go to the beach. We took the tram which was quick.
From the time we lined up (10:52) to getting to the beach (11:28) it was over 30 minutes or standing in lines.
As for the actual snorkeling, it was better at other locations. There was actually a really strong current, waves, and serious winds. I’m not sure if it had to do with the day or time that we went, but it created very cloudy conditions in the water. We did see some beautiful fish but we think it was better at sharks cove. The conditions were so rough that two of the older people in our group could not handle the water. I am a very strong swimmer (like I have done a triathlon) but there were times that I was struggling.
People do not respect the coral. It’s incredibly frustrating. You literally will see people standing/walking right on top of it. We told one guy to get off and he said “I have shoes on.” People are just stupid. It also gets very crowded in the water in some areas. People will just kick you and swim right on top of you. Even though they limit the amount of people per day, it is too many. This reef will not be here in ten years with the way people treat it, and NO one enforces rules.
Other things- there are lifeguards.
Pack your own food/drink. A regular size Gatorade is $7. Limited shade.
I guess I’m glad we went. The beach was pretty, views were nice, and we saw big fish, but for 25 dollars a person, I don’t think we would do it again.

Which bus should we take from Waikiki Beach Marriot Resort to get to Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve?

I used the transportation service provided via the Hanuma Bay itself and was very happy. It was worth it. Just call the park--or book online-- and set up your reservations directly with them, and add on the transportation package. Remember the 6 am time gives you the best water visibility so its worth the early morning start :)

I see people saying an online reservation is absolutely required and sells out in 10 minutes and I see people saying they bought their ticket at the gate. I'm planning a trip for May 2023. What's the current best way to get a ticket?

It was quite difficult to get a ticket, if I remember correctly they release the tickets @ 7AM, two days in advance? That is what we did, I have no idea about purchasing at the gate? good luck!

Hi ! I’m actually not 100% sure what the difference is, most people recommend to bring your own snorkeling gear. The rentals at Hanauma Bay are very expensive so i would recommend to either buy your own gear at a store (ABC stores), or you can rent snorkel gear at another location.
I tried for 50 mins starting at 7 am but the website said always DISMISS, limit the 6 members even though I checked for 2 people, or all tickets sold out at the last stage. It is so annoying actually. Any problem with the website or any cautions I should know?

Be sure to login a few minutes before it opens at 7 am and be quick to complete your transaction. Last time it only took 10 minutes to sold out.

All Slots will be filled up quickly within 10 minutes so you must be quick to complete the registration. General speaking early is better just so you can find parking at their parking lot and spend more time there.
Hi! I’m going to Hanuama bay this month (June 2021).
Do you know how easy it is to get Uber from Diamond Head /KCC farmer market to Hanuama Bay on a Saturday afternoon?
And back from Hanuama bay to Waikiki hotel?
Thanks so much!

I would love to know the name of trees in main parking lot. A veragated green and white kind of heart shaped leaf. So beautiful but know one seems to know the name.
How much does it cost to uber from Waikiki to Haunama Bay?

You just type in the location you are at like Aston Waikiki Sand Villa and to where in Uber you would like to go like saying Hanauma bay in the where to and an ap will come up with how much it will cost to where you are from like Aston Waikiki Sand Villa hotel to Hanauma bay within the Uber app. Hanauma bay also has a shuttle to and from Hanauma Bay which has a reservation on their website. Hanauma bay has a website with all FAQ's frequently asked questions section and verbatim on the Hanauma bay website.
