About
Located near the back lawn of The Breakers and other historic mansions like Rough Point, this scenic 3.5-mile walk along Newport's coastline connects the western end of Easton Beach to the eastern end of Bailey’s Beach. Stroll along the Cliff Walk to spot a variety of wildflowers and birds, and enjoy commanding views of Narragansett Bay.It’s mostly an easy walk, but watch out for the southern section, which can get slightly tricky along the rocky shore. Newport gets especially busy during summer weekends—plan your visit during spring or fall, or on weekdays for fewer crowds. – Tripadvisor

    Nice walk along pretty beach
We’ll worth doing if in the area. It’s about 3.5 miles so be prepared for a good walk. I began where the restrooms are @ 40 steps. I walked to the beach and then back to 40 steps. I didn’t go right at forty steps because they had it closed off so while I didn’t see the whole thing, what I saw gave me a good idea of it.

Great Walk - do as much or as little as desired
The cliff walk is a lovely way to view Newport's harbor and the mansions from the back. Much of the path is paved and an easy walk. Pay attention to the signs that say when the path gets moderate or difficult - it's true. There were areas marked that had large rocks to navigate and it made me nervous as I have poor balance, but again, it was marked. I'd suggest parking more near the mid part of the path or the end, as parking near the beginning was full.

Catch a trolley bus both ways.
We found it very easy to catcha trolley bus from the bus station in Newport and asked the driver to let us off at the start. On the way back we asked to be dropped off in the centre. The walk is an easy 3.5 mile walk but not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs as there are steps and uneven ground. The path hugs the sea and gives you an opportunity to see the gilt edge mansions of a bye gone age. Explanation boards give an insight into this age but we used the information on our phone from a QR code which gives a lot more information and well worth doing.

    A pleasure to walk
The smell of sea air, the rocky coast, I could have been California coast except couldn’t find tide pools. Nice walk. Some shade, sun, rain, wind. We walked some before lunch and some after. Part of the walk has fallen into the sea. That part was barricaded off, no concerns there.

Beautiful views of the ocean and incredible mansions!
Although parts of the original cliffwalk are close due to safety concerns, the rest is definitely worth the effort. Many examples of art deco architecture and while waves crash on the rocks below. A once in a lifetime experience!

    Free and beautiful!
Great free thing to do in Newport! We only walked a short section near the Breakers, but I would love to do the whole trail sometime. Gorgeous scenery and lovely way to get a glimpse of the magnificent homes. We used the free trolley to drop us off and pick us up.

Very nice walk, parking is hard to find
We walked the paved portion of the cliff walk and parked near 40 steps. It took about 30 mins from this point to the beach entrance at a leisurely pace. Nice views of the ocean and water front properties. If you are looking for a nice stroll this is it. We parked on the street near 40 steps and paid near the entrance.

    Beautiful and a Must Do
The walk is so beautiful along the coast. I would recommend going in the morning when less crowded and cooler in the summer. We did the entire walk and it does get challenging towards to the end. The rocks can be difficult to maneuver and at times I was a little nervous.

    Lovely views
We had already done a trolley tour so we knew to take the bus to the Breakers due to construction on the early part of the walk We should have paid better attention to getting off the walk as we ended up doing the entire length, including the rocks/boulders and tunnel. It was more than we expected, but it was lovely. Once you reach the end there are signs to direct you back to the trolley /bus so you do not need to walk all the way back.

Nice walk, nice walk, be careful with parking
The walk is mild until probably Breakers. Beyond which could be rough, litterally. So wear good shoes and enjoy. The end of the walk, 250 yards into Bellevue, bus #67 was nice and fast way to Wharf area for lunch. It takes about 3 + hours to finish the walk, add one more if you are visiting the Breakers, ($29). Parking at the entrance near Easton Beach are metered to three hours maximum, beyond which a $40 ticket will be added to your windshield as the aftertaste for you to take home. Those parking spaces are probably the most profitable real estate even in Newport. We come to have a good time, to spend in the shops, and in the restaurants, but of course who would not welcome a bit of extra fine. So parking AT the beach parking at pay for beach parking will be safer. Or plan and consider other options.

It starts out super easy, and then you get to walk across big, flat rock, then a tunnel, and then some pretty trick terrain. I loved it; my husband - not so thrilled. The first time, we walked the whole trail on a cold, overcast day. The second time was a beautiful, sunny day. The waves were crashing, the surfers were surfing. It was awesome.

Beautiful views and most of it is very easy to walk. We visited this winter (Feb.) and it was so clear to view the other coasts. This walk is a must while visiting Newport. Our suggestion is to visit The Breakers Mansion and take the tour and then leave your car in the parking lot and walk to the entrance to the Cliff Walk which is a block away. By the time you finish the tour and walk you’ll be ready for a late lunch! Enjoy it.

We had a wonderful walk. Some parts are difficult especially Rough Neck. The lower part is more of a scramble than a walk at some points. We made it, but we did return to our car parked at the Breakers by way of Bellevue Ave and not Cliff Walk. We walked from just south of the detour to Ledge road. The weather was great, for January. 40s and sunny. No egress along the route . Keep in mind, many of the houses along the route are not Preservation Society houses and the owners deserve their right to privacy.

This is an easy walk with plenty of places to take photos off the main path. We strolled down to rocks and the staircase to take some incredible views of the ocean expanse and city. The second half of cliff walk had the mansions and there are bathrooms in the middle of the walk. This is easy for kids and less avid hikers.

I walked the entire walk; my wife just did the easier parts. Both of us enjoyed it immensely. The north end from Memorial Blvd. to Narragansett Ave. is very easy, suitable for someone in a wheelchair. The area near the other end from Rough Point to The Waves is fairly strenuous, not recommended for anyone with virtually any mobility issues. That said, I am a healthy 73-year-old and had no difficulties.
There are less views of the Newport Mansions than I might have liked but great views of the coast. And there are some very nice mansion views.
We parked on Narragansett Ave. at 40-steps; parking is $2/hr. On the other hand, parking at the south end is very difficult to find and not close to the Cliff Walk.

A pleasant walk, but disappointing. We did the sealed path extent of the walk, not the whole length. We were expecting the views to be better and the walk more interesting. There was not a great deal to see, but we enjoyed the exercise.

A nice walk along the cliff but I was led to believe that there was more to see. This was not the case. We walked along the paved portion of the walk. We probably would have enjoyed it more except it was a chilly day. It was great exercise but again, not much to see.

We went on this walk on a beautiful Sunday last week. We walked from our hotel (Bellevue Manor) down Memorial Avenue (gorgeous street btw with the fall colors) to the Cliff walk entrance at Easton Beach and walked the entire length to the end. The first mile or so was very easy and paved and shortly after you pass The Breakers there are rocky parts but very manageable even wearing regular sneakers. The views are breathtaking! It took us about 2 hours as we made frequent stops to take photos. From the end we walked a couple blocks to Bellevue Avenue and caught the free trolley #67 back to our hotel. Aside from all the great seafood we ate, this was our favorite thing that we did on this trip. Do not miss doing this walk when in Newport!

Tip: The trolley was running every 15 minutes but was very crowded. Some people who got to the bus stop after us could not board. If this happens, cross the street to catch the trolley BEFORE it gets to the end of its route and turns around to ensure a spot.

Beautiful ocean/ beach views. Well kept trail along the easy green path. Didn't go along the path when it became red/orange difficult path.
Disappointed you couldn't see most of the big mansions.
