Tlingit Native Dancers enter with beautiful regalia, mesmerizing the audience with ancient songs handed down through generations of these first Sitka peoples. The performance begins with the resonating sound of the box drum and the aroma of burning cedar in a traditional style Tlingit Clan House. Learn a few words of Tlingit and see one of the Pacific NW's largest carved house screens.

Beautiful regalia. It was wonderful to see the children dancing with their mothers. I learned quite a lot.

We do seek to start our shows in a timely manner so that those guests on a schedule will not be disserviced. Due to the darkened theater we try not to open our doors after performance begins so as not to distract either the audience...More

The performance was special as an experience of a community sharing their culture with persons traveling through Sitka. The narrator had cue cards but was very skilled in her talk. It was delightful to be able to talk with the dancers ranging in age from...More

This dance experience was special because of a few individuals who were charismatic. If you rate this against a performance by a metropolitan dance company, you will be disappointed. They are very obviously growing their talent in a very small town. These dances are not...More

We went to the beautiful Sitka Tribe Dance Center, expecting a something really spectacular. However, our expectations weren't met. The dances, while probably authentic, weren't particularly exciting or energetic... nothing like a Southwestern Indian Pow Wow. Most disappointing was the narrator, who read the lines...More

Thank you for your comments. Tlingit dance style is very different from SW PowWow often focusing heavily on drumming, beautiful singing and authentic regalia rather then elaborate movements. Our performances are meant to share an active culture with visitors but are also a learning experience...More

When you are going to use a narrator as the key feature, reading from cue cards, to provide the continuity of a performance with regard to what is happening, it will help to have someone who can actually read. The narrator for our dance performance...More

Thank you for your comments. You may have noticed that the narrator was wearing glasses and was also a bit nervous. Our dance performances serve a two-fold purpose: (one) to offer a glimpse of genuine and still living Tlingit life to others while (two) giving...More
