We arrived in October--there were only hummingbirds and a gray junco there. We missed the migration period. We did walk the trail on the hill which was pleasant but without birds. They were at the feeders at the center.

There is a board with the postings of sightings of various bird species at the visitor's center. Be sure to take the walk around the lake if you go.

This center has a system of trails behind the visitor center. There is a fairly short circular trail, open to sun, but off that trail is one into Bear Canyon, which I recommend. It's along a little stream, and has lots of birds, is beautiful...More

Fantastic short hike through some great trees, plants, and views. But, there is some climbing, so proper footwear is a must. Wonderful hummingbird garden. A nice break from indoor museums, galleries, and shopping.

The well-kept garden area near the visitor center attracts a wide variety of birds, including loads of hummingbirds. There's a short walking trail on site, too, and the Nature Conservancy maintains some nearby trails if you're looking for something longer.

We have parked outside the gate when the center was closed during the winter. I imagine it is fine as long as you do not block the road for people coming later. Road is narrow.
