About
With more than 8,500 animals on 56 acres, there's plenty of fun for the whole family. The San Antonio Zoo was first established with a donation from George W. Brackenridg in the 1800s. Two of the first cageless exhibits in the U.S. opened here in 1929 and the bird collection is one of the world's largest.

    Underwhelmed
We were so excited to finally make it to San Antonio and visit their zoo. Unfortunately, we were underwhelmed, especially for the for the cost of admission. The one thing we really wanted to see were the hippos. We did see them, but the water was so cloudy that we were barely able to see them. If you like birds, they have a lot of them. (they are pretty, but....) The zoo had a lot fewer animals than we expected. The signage is bad/confusing. We tried to download the map of the zoo but it was very difficult to read as it was blurry. Every other zoo we have been to always has staff around some of the exhibits to answer questions and just keep an eye on things. At several animal habitats, kids and adults were taunting the animals. The zoo does offer free parking, which is nice.

    Fun Thanksgiving trip with kids
Visited on a weekday, crowd was on the lower side. Parking was comfortable and available though ticket prices are on the higher side as they cater only to your admission. There are other activities inside for which you have to pay extra, photos with Santa and animals are charged in excess of $40, which is definitely way too high. The animals are fun and they have every animal which was claimed on their website so you will not feel disappointed. My 10 yr old son and teen daughter had a blast, esp. the kangaroo interaction was fun. Go out and enjoy for approx 3 hrs but be ready to pay extra!

    Amazing zoo
We went on a rainy December day, had the place to ourselves. No one was there. They had lots of up charges, but I’m ok with that, it goes towards the animals. Paid to feed the giraffes, see butterflies, petting zoo, ride a carousel. Lots of animals, was impressed. Right up there in top 5 zoos I have visited, and we pretty much go to every zoo when on vacation. Helpful staff. Free parking, which is a plus.

I had the CityPass and had 1 last attraction left to visit for my trip, so I decided the Zoo would be the best bang for my buck, considering tickets are $36 normally. I felt like the map was very helpful with getting around. Liked seeing the animals. Although, there were many empty enclosures and/or animals sleeping or laying around in an unseen area. That was a little bit of a downer. Other than that, there are LOTS of birds. I would’ve liked to have seen more marine animals (I know this isn’t an aquarium but those are my fav animals). The Savanna and the Congo are “coming soon” areas that I think will be super cool. I will have to visit again when those are built. I visited late in the afternoon (around 3:30PM, they close at 5). It seems almost all the food places were either already closed when I got there or closed by 4:30PM, I wasn’t bothered by it - since I wasn’t planning on eating - but just letting people know. Also, all of the “experiences” seemed to have been closed. Like feeding giraffes, kangaroo crossing, etc. not sure what time those end or if they had been closed the whole day.

They have done alot to make this place a better zoo. I went like 17 years ago and was not impressed and went back this weekend and was pleasantly surprised and they are still building more. Lots of animals, lots of indoor animal rooms, lots for the kids to explore and play on. Fun animal talks. Only thing I will complain about is the food. Is sub par, costs more then it should, and takes forever to get, even if you pre order

I think zoos can be ethical but I don't think this one meets that standard, even though I think they have the capability to be. They had cool animals but pretty sad to see the animals in their tiny boxes.

It's not like they don't have the space to properly house the animals. They really need to cut down the number of enclosures so that the ones they do have are humanely sized. There was even about 4 different flamingo exhibits and three of them were absolutely tiny, why do you need so many flamingoes when you dont have the space. I think at least 90% of the birds need to go. They have nowhere to fly. Unless they were absolutely tiny birds most the cages were only about 3-5 times the size of their wingspan. The bears were in a space no bigger than my apartment with pretty well no vegetation or enrichment. Just lying on rock only the only patch of shade in their exhibit. Same with a lot of the wild cats and fossa. Some of the exhibits could maybe pass as humane (like the giraffes and rhinos), but this zoo needs to seriously increase the size of their enclosures and add a lot more vegetation, natural ground (i.e. dirt not just concrete or rock), and enrichment, including more than just one animal in certain enclosures. Like, why was the warthog alone. Their pretty social animals. Overall just a lot of feeling bad for the animals living desolate, boring, lonely cramped lives, their entire lives. It was a bit of a bummer.

The price to get into this zoo is ridiculous. What about all the kids in the area who want to experience the attractions but can't afford the price of a small car payment for their family of four to go?? Other cities have their zoo for free admission. Our zoo is OUTRAGEOUS! Plus I'd rather have less admission fee than tall statues of animals that I am sure cost a fortune to "decorate" the zoo when people are there to see REAL animals.

Those poor animals, all look so sad and depressed, every time we go there, they are just lying around in the shade as if they have nothing to look forward to in their lives

Very old, cramped and rundown zoo. This is the kind of zoo that gives zoos a bad reputation. Left feeling sad for the animals. Small pens and habitat areas. Not really many animals. Skip this one.

The San Antonio Zoo is the worst zoo I have ever been to. Not only was it expensive for a family of 4, a lot of the exhibits were closed. I do not recommend going to this zoo. The parking garage elevator was also not working and we had to carry our wagon down the stairs.

The zoo was very nice, my complaint is with the transaction. You have to pay totally on line. Part of the process then involves creating an account and then that involved unwanted music and movies. By the time its done i'm ending up having to get a new credit card. wth happened to just paying a g-dam admission and going in???

A nice little zoo to visit once. Parking is free. Pretty easy to walk around. I had been really looking forward to visiting for months to see Timothy and Gunter and Gates. Unfortunately...

The Facebook page had my expectations up for what I was going to see and it didn't happen. Many of the creatures featured on FB are not actually on habitat anywhere. They did have a tamandua talk but I missed that because there were no schedules handed out and no posting of daily events that I saw at the entry. Plus, they need to post a disclaimer on the FB videos shot overhead showing Timothy's antics because...you can't go there. No overhead vantage point accessible to us regular members at all. Only viewing is through the marred and scuffed glass in murky water. I got a decent face shot of him but nothing compared to the hundreds I've gotten of Fiona and Fritz and Bibi and Tucker. I only found Gunter because another photographer saw my camera and told me the one spot you could stand to see him and Sula. Also, you gotta be lucky to see Rosie, the yellow-backed duiker, because her habitat has the same small viewing spot. I was just fortunate enough to walk past the warthogs and spot her. There is a section of walkway blocked off for some reason (and it's been blocked off for some time) that is the only viewing opportunity for 4 different habitats, two of which are the yellow-backed duiker, one is the babirusa. Don't know what the fourth is. I did get to see Gates running around in the morning during his outdoor time.

There are a TON of birds here so you better like birds. Many are 'visitors'. Some have decent habitats but most are small concrete enclosures or cages with poor lighting (they need a second bird building). Also, the place was overrun by black vultures. Guess it's that time of year. Ironically, the only habitats they weren't invading were the carnivores which I would think would be the only place they might find a tasty morsel. Literally at least 2 dozen in the anteater and capybara enclosure alone.

Additionally, there are a lot of habitats/attractions that are an additional charge. I mean, most zoos with giraffe have the opportunity to pay to feed them but to have to pay extra to see the butterflies or walk with the kangaroos or...a little much. As far as I could find there or on line, there is no option for an 'all-inclusive' zoo pass to cover all these extras without the $4 here and $4 there.

And my pet peeve...I collect lapel pins and there's not a single one here. Literally over a dozen different zoo key chains and magnets but not one SA Zoo pin. Not one.
I mean, how many key rings can someone possibly use and just how many magnets fit on a refrigerator? Whereas, I have 10 cases displaying pins from my travels.

The great points: Finding Gunter...to the tune of about 200+ pictures..., seeing Gates play, painted dogs when they knew the person near you, lemurs overhead, jaguar crossing, black bears finding their enrichment, watching the Aldabra tortoise when their dude starts brushing them and the cool crocodilians.

For this year, as a birthday gift I decided I wanted to spend the day at the zoo. It was a lovely day, not too hot, no rain and we went early as it opened. As always, the exhibits were great and the animals looked well cared for. The flamingos were awesome as were the botanical life throughout the zoo. I enjoyed the aquarium and the reptile house, however was a bit saddened when there were no poison dart frogs to see. Overall it is a great place, the only potential downside was that there was a lack of gluten free food available for sale. I’m glad we went, you don’t need to be a kid to enjoy a day at the zoo!
