This is our second favorite place to snorkel in Hawaii (Captain Cook is our favorite). With a park pass you can park in the National Park service parking lot. The snorkeling is great. It is named for the smooth surface entrance (2 steps). Once you...More

Turtles! Lots and lots and lots of fish and we saw an eel too! The coral is varied and lots of it, the water was calm and there was lots to explore. We found a super easy spot to enter the water, and this is...More

If going strictly for the snorkeling and experienced, this is a great location. Otherwise, it's marginal. There is no beach, only the lava flow. Even then, it was very crowded. Parking is a challenge. If willing to pay the $5 parking fee, park at the...More

This distinct beach is next to the national park and many people going to the park end up wandering over to Honaunau Bay. The serenity of the Place of Refuge (the park) is in stark contrast to the activity at the Bay. This is the...More

Honaunau Two Step in the City of Refuge is a great snorkel spot for those who are a bit better skilled. When we visited we didn’t find nearly as many fish here as compared to Kahalu’u Bay (which is good for more beginner types) but...More

We spent the better part of our first day at Honaunau Bay and the City of Refuge. There were many sights to see and lovely views of the bay. However, our favorite part were all the tidal pools that have formed across the lava fields...More

Snorkeling was great. Entered the water on the two step side. There weren’t many fish. Went over near the boat ramp side. There were a bunch of fish and sea turtles. Great place to snorkel.

Less of a beach, more of a snorkel/cultural site, and still a great excuse to get in the water. 20 miles south of Kailua-Kona. I stumbled upon this place after parking at the Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, also known as the Place of...More

On the big island of Hawaii..great site and beautiful picture sites. There is a small gift shop, a ranger that will present programs in the amphitheater. Well worth the time to see.
