This is a stop as a part of the Petersburg National Battlefield Park. It is a somber place to view graves of those who gave there lives during the Civil War.

Off-the-beaten path National Cemetery has many graves for known and unknown soldiers of the civil war primarily but also of other wars. Interesting interpretive leaflet available near gates; not always staffed; passport stamps available at battlefield visitors center. Separated from battlefield site. Now closed to...More

Poplar Grove National Cemetery is part of the Western Front Driving Tour of the Petersburg National Battlefield. The downside is most of route is either covered by modern development or bushes and trees. Getting to Poplar Grove from Petersburg National Battlefield, I would highly recommend...More

Well kept with rows and rows of heroes. Free admission, public restrooms and parking. Stop and pay your respects.

We stopped here after visiting the eastern battlefield at Petersburg and didn't walk the entire grounds. I'd visit the Hollywood Cemetery before this. However, this would be a good visit to see and pay respects.

Though still in use today there is a well of history amongst the old gravestones, a time past when the events of the day were bloody and steeped in misery.

Currently this site is closed to the public. Repairs are being made to the entire site. Plan to visit later. However, you can see over the wall into the cemetery but you will see only grass.

We visited on a dreary, drizzly day. Wandering the grounds, reading the stones and noting the number of "unknowns" brought home a reminder of the staggering waste and loss of the war.
