My family and I signed up for the virtual game Return to Treasure Island with Mystery Escape Room.
This review is based on experiences in over 100 in person games and 20 or so virtual games of different formats (live avatar in the room, animated, etc.)
The room is $80 per group of 4 to 8 players.
We received an email with the Google meets link and links to a Google document you will need to complete the room.
You will need to forward this email to other group members.
The format of the rooms at Mystery Escape Room are fully animated room with a live guide. All players can scan the room and interact with items independently.
However, once you leave an area or puzzle you will need to need to reinput the code and each individual player will need to complete all steps in order to finish.
Here are some tips to help.
1) Have everyone copy and paste the screenshots, passcodes, etc. into the Google doc for easy access for all players.
2) You can copy and paste links into rooms other players have entered into the Google document for easy access.
Pros
1) You can play the game without the guide present.
2) Each player can look at the room independently.
Cons
1) Some of the clues are hard to see unless you scan the entire room carefully.
2) Retyping in codes wastes time and is frustrating.
The game itself was fine. We did escape after the time.
The problem was our guide Captain Caloway.
Her lack of enthusiasm was palpable from the start with her monotone introduction to the group to her condescending hints.
At the start, when my wife's microphone was causing an echo, her sarcastic comment "Guess I will have a headache the whole game" made my wife uncomfortable to where she was on mute the whole game which made communication difficult.
Her approach to guiding was not entertaining at all and her negative attitude took away from the fun of the game.
She looked like she would rather be anywhere than to helping us with this room.
Truly, for her benefit, she should find a job where entertaining/customer service are not involved as these were not her strong suits. Hopefully she was having a bad day and hope her day got better.
It was disappointing but we would like to try the Super Heroes room in the future.

Went for a birthday celebration with all the family, had 8 of us, and we all absolutely loved it. We did the Houdini room and it worked perfectly because it was challenging for us, but with 8 in our group it was if everyone had something they were working on at all times. The props, room and clues were all fantastic. the staff were incredibly polite and helpful, very professional and made the whole experience a memorable one. Would absolutely go back and try another one of their challenges.

We didn't escape, but we only had four in our group and could have used more people. The Christmas room was a fun theme and there were all types of puzzles. Would definitely go back and try one of the other rooms. Our guide was great!

We were in town the night before a flight and decided this was a good way to kill time. We did the Zoro room. We were placed with other people but it wasn’t awkward. We almost made it but it was quite challenging. Garret was an awesome guide. 10/10 would recommend.

We had never done an escape room before. We had two adults and two kids (10 and 13.) we did the sort of Zorro room. Grandpa Gus (Jayden) was our guide. He was so patient and helpful! We loved it! I can’t wait to come back to do another room.

This was one of our favorite escape room experiences. This was majorly because of our game master the Duke. He made Our experience so immersive. The Duke is one of the most fascinating people we have ever met. We wish we could be friends. The escape room itself was very good, challenging puzzles, very well themed. We did the Houdini one with 5 minutes to spare. The time machine prep room was a nice touch. Would definitely go back and do another room when we're back in town. Make sure to go on Mondays and Tuesdays - when the Duke is there.

This will probably be the most realistic review you get of the place. The reason there are so many fives is because the moderators pass out cards at the end asking for fives. Sorry, if I'm paying almost $50, I'm going to give my own review. If you have to ask for fives then you are doing something wrong. There was about about 10 of us in the room. I didn't know what to expect going in. I just wanted to find something different to do for date night with my wife. I thought the cost was a little steep but I was able to find two tickets on KSL deals for about $43. (I still thought this was a little steep) I didn't know what to expect but for some reason I thought the concept was once you figure out a room, you move on to the next room and that there were various rooms. You go into one room and try to figure out how to get into the cell to unlock a box. It was quite challenging I will say which made it fun because there were so many different clues and it really made you think. What kind of made it cheesy and corny to me was the beginning of the experience. We were gathered in the front part of the business and while the actor Eric is trying to make you feel like you are in this scenario, all the meanwhile there are customers entering the business and asking about it. It was a little distracting. I like to play the part to make the experience even better but it was hard with other customers coming in and Eric is trying to act like a magician. I thought the moderator did a good job during the mystery to let us figure it out on our own but also when necessary give us enough hints to get to the next step. I also didn't understand why we couldn't take pictures. I took a picture just to remember my time in there and they immediately asked me to delete it. Good thing I have a recently deleted archive and can recover it. I would understand if you are taking pictures of the clues and don't want to give out any clues or hints over the internet. That wasn't my intention and I really didn't take any pictures of anything. In the end they take a picture and email it to you but I like taking pictures from my own experience, not from the eyes of the business.
Overall , this is a must to try out, I would definitely try to find coupons though. I would say areas for improvement which would require more money but definitely a better experience.
1. Create a better story and experiencing by separating the group into a soundproof room to where you don't see anything that would draw away from the experience (Like the customers walking in and other conversations going on while Eric tries to act like a magician)
2. I would suggest either mentioning in the ad or offering something else besides the buy 1 get 1 free yogurt at the yogurt shop across from the business that they are expired. By the time we got out they were closed even though the worker said, "And they might be closed but I think you can still go over there." That was part of my date and I wanted to be able to get a treat afterwards but wasn't possible
3. Lowering the cost. If there were separate soundproof rooms , they could validate charging that much but where the business stands with being able to hear everyone and taking away from the experience I just felt it was a little pricey.
POSITIVES
1. Friendly staff
2. Moderator kept up with us and was quick witted and gave us hints at appropriate time
3. Challenging clues, you are definitely not going to be getting done with it in 30 minutes, if you do Kudos to you.
4. Good experience to meet new people and engage one with another.

Thank you for taking the time to write a thoughtful and detailed review! We are truly interested in hearing how we are doing from all our guests. We read each review and strive to better the experience for everyone. We encourage everyone to leave a review so we can evaluate how we can improve. This is why the monitors mention leaving a review. We hope guests leave a honest review and most if they take the time do. Thank you for your ideas and suggestions. We are glad you had fun and enjoyed the monitor, room, and puzzles. We are working on ways we can isolate the sound in the front rooms. The back room is further away and much more isolated. We run the rooms at differing times so that there is only one group prepping for any one room at a given time to help with this. We are also making improvements on the stories and experiences in each room, with the hopes that each room just gets better and better. Thanks again for coming and reviewing us and we do hope you come again. Please let us know if there is anything else we could do to make the experience more enjoyable.

When we signed up to go to the Mystery Escape Room as a team of co-workers, I thought it sounded pretty fun, and I was willing to try it because I'd heard of things like this, and I was interested to see what it was like. Little did I know how much fun it would be!
We were in Houdini's Challenge room, with a group of 8 of us. Our monitor was Bart, a goofy young kid who at the beginning was somewhat awkward, but, ended up being really fun. He was a good moderator, giving helpful clues when they were needed, but never giving too much information, allowing us to still enjoy the challenge.
HELPFUL TIP: If you're stumped, and need an additional clue, that the moderator says, "I'll need something in return from you", don't hesitate to do it! We turned him down a dozen times thinking it could take time away, or add some penalty or something, but, It's not a big deal what he asks from you, and it in no way hinders your success. Let's just say, you need to be willing to act a little silly, but then you'll get a clue that could mean getting the next lock box unlocked.
My recommendation to success in this room is to work together, and look at EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING!! Don't leave any "stone" unturned, so to speak. Other than the pictures on the walls of course, they're just decoration, don't waste your time.
Our team worked well together, and we were able to find Houdini's black book within 56:53. Bart came in afterwards and gave us a summary of what we did well, and what we did that was funny. It was nice getting feedback, to help us feel even more clever than we already did.
I was thinking about this experience for days afterwards, and how stinkin' fun the whole thing was! I really hope this place continues to do well, because, it was seriously such a delightful experience! I think it's a great team building activity for corporate teams as well. So, if you're looking for an idea for an activity to do with your team of employees, look no further. This is the perfect fit!

We have good things to say about our guide Sir Sparky, but the room was really easy for an experienced group of escape room enthusiasts. We were told we broke a record on fastest escape....unfortunately, it felt like we didn’t get our money’s worth as a result. Theming was elaborate, but puzzles were easy.

Ok, so after watching the intro video that explains the rules, I was worried that this was going to be full on cheddar cheese. Then inspector bird, aka Chris came out (who was great), and did an amazing job. The room and puzzles were well put together. It was actually a lot of fun. We did the Sherlock room with nine people. We would definitely recommend, but don’t bring our friend Courtney, because she’s a cheating fugly $lut. Also, keep in mind that you might be put with strangers, who were awesome. Hopefully Courtney isn’t one of them. B1tch.

Thank you for this kind and humorous feedback! I appreciate your help in solving the case, and I hope to see you again soon. (Bring Courtney, don't be mean to her. She may well be the key to your success!)

Would it be appropriate for 10-11 year old boys?
Written January 19, 2018
I would think so they have different rooms with different stories. But to be on the safe side I would call or go to their website. We did the most difficult room they have but I think they have different rooms for different abilities.
Written January 19, 2018
If you finish the room in record time you will be place on the Wall of Fame with a group picture and your finishing time.... plus you get bragging rights which is encouraged. The rooms are hard and if you escape you definitely earned it. Also... if you escape the Mystery Impossible room (in impossible mode) you win a free room.

Hello. Is it possible to do the puzzles with children (above 11 and 13), but that does not have strong knowledge in english (we are french speaking family :) )
Written September 3, 2015
Hi,
We often have non-English speaking families or groups come in. Some of the rooms require more English skill than others. Please call for us to suggest which of our current rooms might be best.
Young teens tend to do well in our rooms if they have a few adults who can help them on some of the tougher puzzles.

Written August 10, 2015
Thank you for your questions. I don't know your language so I am using Google translate to help me understand what your questions are.
The rooms have a number of puzzles and clues in them. They are all based on the theme of the room. Some require multiple people to solve them while others can be solved by a single person in the group. In order for a group to be successful, they must cooperate with each other and work together. The puzzles can be a great way to build relationships in a team. They can also reveal weaknesses in a team.

We will only have 4 people in our group. Can we do it as a group of 4 or will we be put with a group of strangers?
Written March 3, 2015
The best answer I can give you for your question is that we don't know. We hold twelve slots open for each room but they don't always fill up. There is a higher likelihood that it will fill up on a weekend but it all depends on who books.
We suggest at least 6 people for most of our rooms. The rooms are designed and tested to keep 8 people busy for the full hour. We've done rooms with only four but it is a lot to cover with just that many. Some rooms are better than others for smaller groups. I suggest giving us a call and we can help you with what room might be the best to try with a smaller group.

Cost, opening times, length of time needed for the activities
Written February 28, 2015
Individual tickets are $29.95 per person. We have daytime group rates that are $225 per room for up to 12 people. Group rates are only available during our daytime hours.
We are open by appointment so it depends on when rooms are scheduled. WE have rooms available from 9:20 AM till 8:00 PM Monday through Thursday and from 9:20 AM till 10:00 PM Friday and Saturday. We are closed Sunday.
All rooms are one hour in length but we suggest planning on 90 minutes for full activity.
I hope that helps.
