I asked about this place at my hotel and they said everyone who had gone, came back saying it was hilarious. They were right! I saw "Hunger Game of Thrones". It was a spoof play that had witty quips, a great story line infused with a little singing and dancing. The cast was so talented and got audience involvement. You could tell it was a favorite of the locals. So many came and the laughter of the audience was contagious. I wish they had something like this in my city.

This was a parody of Dr. Who. Play was original and very funny. This is one of our favorite places to see a play. The building is older with lots of character. Plays here are always comedies and in most cases are parodies. Atmosphere is very relaxed. Snacks and drinks are $1. Get ready for a good time.

Thoroughly enjoyed the "Doctor U" show we saw on Monday night... was funny, clever and well acted. Even our 15 yr. old son enjoyed it. Also loved the old/nostalgic theater and cheap candy prices! Go to dinner and have drinks before you come - only popcorn, candy and sodas available.... but at a a GREAT price! The acting was great!!

I made it a point to catch the show on new years eve at the off broadway comedy theater. I have attended a few shows throughout the years and have enjoyed each and everyone. The 45 minute 'improv' show was very entertaining and the troupe did very well with keeping the audience involved.
However a few things need to be known for the first timer. This is a small theater. Therefore the facilities are a bit worn, and the budget is tight. Inspite of that, it is a wonderful venue (even if you don't mind feeling like your sitting on a worn out futon) I plan on going back soon.

It's always fun to hit a movie here. Old theater right in the heart of downtown with parking commonly easy to find. The movie is never super loud, which is so unlike other theaters.
The food, well let's just say, they are not a restaurant and you should eat before you come. They offer some hot foods, which clearly are frozen and half heated in a microwave. I appreciate the effort, but serving half frozen food is not good for anyone's image. The also have an espresso fare and fresh popcorn.

A friend took me to this wonderful old theater in downtown SLC. Though it has seen better years, it was clean and comfortable. I was amazed at the amount of options at the concession. It was great!
The seats are comfortable and the entertainment was good. We saw Trumbo and though the theater was not filled to capacity, everyone seemed to have a nice time.
Good eats and easy parking on this Saturday afternoon.

On Friday evening, November 20, 2015, my wife and I rode TRAX to the Gallivan Plaza Station, which put us directly on the block of the Off Broadway Theater.
We did have to walk down to the corner to avoid jaywalking across the tracks and car traffic lane and then back up to the theater. The theater is close to that corner (Broadway and Main Street intersection), so it’s not a major walk.
The play’s title was “The Grouch Who Stole Christmas.” As the name implies, the play was a combined parody mostly of the Dr. Zeus story about the Grinch, but with a mix of characters resembling, but carefully not very distantly imitating(?) characters from Sesame Street. The play took place during some of the scenes on Suessame Street, again, carefully not very distantly imitating(?) Sesame Street, itself. The play included Yayhoos and a Mister Rod Cheers, who entered and talked to the audience while he changed into his house sweater and house shoes from street shoes, as Mr. Rogers used to do. Again, they were carefully not very distantly imitating(?) the characters they almost resembled.
All in all, my wife and I enjoyed the play and the interactions. We joined the rest of the audience with booing and hissing anytime the “evil” one spoke of his evilness. They did include a light adultish hint in one or two places, but even those were not far from G rated and probably went over the heads of any kids younger than about 12, so I’d say that they are still in line with a good time for the kids, too, without a worry about subject matter.
The actors, from the little kids on up, put on a production that went beyond what I would expect from high school plays, but as others have pointed out in reviews across the Internet, not on par with what one would expect from a New York Broadway production. This is, after all, a low-budget production. Still, I would say that they did a good job. Even places where we witnessed obvious adlibs were fun and I don’t think I noticed more than two or three small flubs in the entire production, if that.
They do change the play, sometimes, so be sure to check their Web site for their schedule and other information. We bought our tickets through EZticketLive, which seems to be the main way to buy them on line. The Buy Tickets link from the Off Broadway Theater Web site goes directly to that service. They present the play usually each Monday, Friday, and Saturday, from 7:30 p.m. until close to 10:00.
The theater also hosts a improvisational act called Laughing Stock Improv at 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings, but we did not stay for that. Just so you know, the play and the improvisational segments are separate and cost separately for each.
When you want to do something fun with the family or just with your date (Come on, guys! Spouses count!), enjoy a live play at the Off Broadway Theater.
Seating tips: Any seat has a good view of the stage. We sat in seats G1 and G2. With certain shorter rows nearer the stage on the main level, they can accommodate wheel chairs.
Getting there and back: As of the time of this review, UTA TRAX runs late enough that you can get to Broadway and Main – the Gallivan Plaza Station - from anywhere on the UTA system and then get back after the play. The last Southbound TRAX train leaves at about 11:30 and the last Northbound train leaves at about 11:00 on Monday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. If you do take TRAX, be sure to check the schedule for the times you need.
I understand that the improvisational segment usually lasts until 11:30 or later if the audience is really lively and responsive to the acts, so UTA would not serve your needs to get you back after you attend the Laughing Stock Improv.

I have gone to shows at this theater for years! Every friend that i bring always ends up loving it just as much as I do.
Be sure to check out Laughing Stock, Their improv is very funny. Their plays are excellent too.
They perform their plays their own way, and it's fantastic. You never get the same show twice. Great actors/comedians and staff.
A lot of "family friendly" places usually lack humor for many adults, but trust me, they're funny.
The old theater is cool too, and having it right off of the tracks line is convenient. (Parking downtown in that area can be tricky- best to ride Trax over, or pay $6 to park in one of the lots within a couple blocks)

The Off Broadway Theatre has been a favorite for years. It's a little gem in Salt Lake City that more people need to discover. Don't be deceived by its small exterior, the fun awaiting you is more than you'll believe. You can't help but laugh until you're literally in pain. The plots are always unexpected and the stories are simply so ludicrous you'll want to come back and see it again in case you missed something. Think of slap-stick married to a musical spoof and you've got the show pretty much nailed down. If you are looking for a night of laughs, I would definitely recommend a stop by the Off Broadway Theatre.

The idea of Christmas Carol Part 2 seemed like it had a lot of possibilities. Well, none were realized.
It started with a narrator with a speech impediment. Well, being inclusive might have been a factor, but it didn't come across well.
Then, the plot... there wasn't one. It seemed like a series of disjointed scenes, none of which added continuity or created a cohesive story. Spoofs often have a "running gag." If there was one, it didn't make it to the script.
The leading player had a problem finding the notes. He didn't have a terrible voice, but it wasn't good either.
The supporting characters were supposed to be part of the spoof, but they were neither funny or good. Too bad they couldn't remember their lines.
On the other hand, the popcorn was good. We finished our popcorn and left the show at the intermission.
We wasted our time and money. Don't do the same.
