Really beautiful and peaceful grounds. Lots of interesting graves of prophets famous to the LDS church (formerly known as Mormon church). It’s also home to the mysterious grave of Lilly Gray, who’s headstone reads “Victim of the Beast 666”!!

The area is elevated, up high on a hill overlooking the city. It’s very lush, green and serene with lots of shady areas. The streets are marked as to allow for easy finding of grave sites if you know their general location. The internet said the office has maps, but we tried our hand at figuring it out ourselves lol!

We were especially interested in finding Lilly Gray’s grave. People leave trinkets and gifts on her grave and for a long time, no one knew what really happened! I won’t spoil the mystery for you and tell you what happened to her. Go on an adventure and discover it!
Her grave can be found in the in the most southeast section of the cemetery, directly across the small street dividing the city cemetery from Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery. If you find the intersection of 355 North and 1200 East, all you have to do is start at that intersection and count 14 rows down and it will be the 10th headstone over! It’s also a very remote and serene part of the cemetery and had an amazing view of the city!

Doubt me if you want, but the Salt Lake City Public Cemetery is a genuinely fascinating experience if you’re into the out-of-the ordinary. And it doesn’t even have to do with ghosts. So, why visit? For one, it’s enormous (120 acres, with 9.5 miles of roads and 130,000 burial sites). And, it’s very pretty. Located in the Avenues—a neighborhood known for its gorgeous historical houses—the cemetery matches its environment for sheer picturesque beauty. Second, it’s a historical motherlode. Many important figures central to the early history of Utah, Salt Lake City, and the LDS Church are buried here, and many of the monuments contain historical details about their famous subjects. Finally, there are a few monuments famous for other reasons. The “Christmas Box Angel” is here, as is the internet-legendary “666 Killed by the Beast” headstone. If you plan to visit, there are maps available on the cemetery’s website that will direct you to the more famous burial sites and monuments.

I love old cemeteries. Being from the east coast and having the family history gene I love just exploring cemeteries. This one has many many famous names in Utah history and Mormon history. A must see place.

We stopped because it’s fun to see cemeteries in different states. This one did not disappoint. So much history and some very interesting headstones. If it wasn’t so hot I would have spent all day there.

If you’re struggling to find something to do on a Sunday (most things in Salt Lake Valley are closed) then this is a great option to take up an afternoon. The website for the cemetery has maps of notable figures buried in the cemetery including 12 LDS Presidents and a few dozen early LDS pioneers & Apostles. It also has many notable political figures of SLC Valley buried here.
The cemetery office buildings and bathrooms are closed on Sunday but entrance is still available including car access. If you take a vehicle around be cautious in the older parts (mostly to the south) as there are giant potholes & drop offs. There were a few times we heard cars hitting the potholes while exploring.
We parked outside of the cemetery on the south road (4th Avenue) and hiked all over the cemetery. The southern part of the cemetery is fairly flat, but as you go to the upper northern half it is all on a hill so there is some incline hiking involved if you are on foot the entire time. On 4th & P street there is the 27th Ward LDS Chapel that was constructed in 1902, still operating as a meeting house.
We went to roughly 20 gravesites starting from the South end of the cemetery and hiking all the way up to the top part and back. Using the two maps from the cemetery website we found everyone fairly easily (some gravestones for the Apostles are not large and required an internet search to find). We were trekking around for over 2 hours (walking slow), so depending on how much time you have you can plan accordingly. There were some gravesites we didn’t see and if we would have pushed through we could have easily done about 3+ hours there.
