- TCinci2015Egham, United Kingdom176 contributionsLovely views but terrible access road be carefulThe views and the lake are amazing but if you want avoid potentially damaging your car don’t drive the last 0.5 miles to the visitor center and museum there is a free parking just before you enter the pot holes ( not much road just pot holes in places ). You can walk to the beach then along to the visitor center. Worth a visit but they really need to do something with that road The other issue is you may be shocked but at this time of year there is the normal smell from the marsh and brine but there are 100’s of dead birds on the beach from a virus problem,Visited February 2023Traveled soloWritten February 27, 2023
- Gwen DCincinnati, Ohio2,068 contributionsSo Glad I Finally VisitedI couldn't come all the way to Salt Lake City and not see the lake from the land rather always by the air. Dragged my sister the opposite direction we were heading so that I might say been there done that. It was a lovely morning and so interesting. Worth the time!Visited June 2022Written May 2, 2023
- DLPNew Jersey1,928 contributionsSad Condition of the The Great Salt LakeSo excited to see the Great Salt Lake…the second saltiest body of water in the world, but it was sad and disappointing. The lake is drying up and is surrounded by small muddy puddles and salt flats. The brine flies were unbearable. No doubt you will swallow some if you Venture towards the water. It was a beautiful day the day that we visited, yet not a single boat on the water or not a sole swimming. None the less, I am glad I took the opportunity to see it.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 30, 2023

Interesting facts but underwhelming and yucky. By nature it has a Sulphur smell, it's muddy getting to the receded waters edge. The Visitors Center is an old modular building, they do have showers if you choose to experiment with your buoyancy with a swim.

This lake is huge. We went to the North end and then traveled down the eastern side to the South end. It was very interesting and glad we went while we were visiting Utah.

Terrible place to visit. This lake is almost completely dried up. When we finally made it down to the water there was a million gnats. They charge 15.00 to get in the park. Honestly this park will eventually be shut down. Don’t waste your time here!

After driving cross country I was ready to see this so bad! Haha. It’s nasty guys and gals. It smells like a slew pond and looks like it too. You can’t tell but each picture I took I was being consumed by fleas! In droves it was rough. Dead seagulls laid across the beaches and the picture areas were almost too much to handle flea wise to get a good picture.

Was actually very underwhelming, dead birds everywhere, smelt terrible but the visitor's centre was nice. Lake was cool though.

Really a sorry sight. We paid the park entry fee only to be greeted with a terrible smell which was due to 20k migrating birds who didn't make it. Our grandchildren were experiencing wings, beaks, and dead ducks. I understand the job of removing all these birds, but really? Terrible disappointment.

We wanted to be sure to see Great Salt Lake before it's gone in 5-8 years. Antelope Island is a perfect location for wildlife, hiking and being near the Lake itself.

How to get to the road that is going through the lake and devides it into blue and pink parts (that one with railroad)? Every road we've tried is saying private property and it scared us off 😅 still I know it's possible, there's plenty of pictures and drone videos. Any tips from frequent visitors?

I am planning to go to SLC and hope to be at this lake. Not into swimming or water activities but interested in being around the water for a couple of hours before returning to SLC. Any recommendations? Any parking or entry fees? Any does or don’ts? Thank you so much in advance!

Not that I saw. We went to the Marina. The sand near the lake would be, but to get there you have to go through some pretty soft sand. There's a Visitors Center there, I would call them. (801) 250-1898 or (801) 828-0787. You can also access the lake at Antelope Island State Park. We did not go there because we only had a short time to visit. Try calling them. (801) 773-2941.

You can, but the bugs were so bad when we were there that it would have been very uncomfortable.

What are some good access points with prime views of the Great Salt Lake, if coming from the airport (in August)? I'd like to see it before we head into Salt Lake City. Any advice appreciated.

One nice view is to head west on Interstate #80 towards Nevada. That's where you will find the Great Salt Lake State Park. If you continue driving west on 80, you will see the lake on your right the entire way; there are also some salt companies harvesting salt (like Morton's). If you continue for an hour or so, you will come to the Bonneville Salt Flats where they race cars (bikes, airplanes, etc.) It is worth the drive.

Can you swim in the Great Salt Lake in the summer?

A better place to swim is utah lake just down the road near Provo. The Salt Lake is legal to swim in but unlike the dead sea in Israel tyhe are no good facilities nearby and the banks tend to be a muddy salt marsh and not pleasant
