Absolutely fascinating old fort which was transformed into a prison and held nearly 2000 political prisoners during the dictatorship in Portugal. The fort itself is a stunning piece of defence architecture but the museum housed in the former prison was absolutely fascinating. We spent over...More

Parked close by and had a walk around for an hour as it was closed for lunch. Didnt have to pay to walk around but not much to see unless you speak Portuguese as the museum and all the details of the political upheaval in...More

Peniche is a small, very old town. Most od the buildings are broken and make a rotten impression. If someone likes this morbide flair you then you may be enthusiastic. There are no interesting shops except surf stores which you find one next to another....More

A very interesting place to visit , do not miss the museum with the anti fascist display and the former prisoners cells, it is a shame the woman at the museum desk is not nice and shuts the doors before closing time

We visited the fort one evening before dinner. We didn't have time for the museum (in fact I am not sure it was even open) but just wandering around the building itself (which it seemed we could do free of charge) was enjoyable and atmospheric....More

As Peniche was a little disappointing as a place to visit, the fort was a welcome relief. It was interesting to look round - the museum was worth the small charge to get in. It could do with more English translations, hence the 4 stars,...More

It was a great historic trip into the Fortaleza, a bit low budget place, but you have to understand the posibilities that they have for this kind of things. Nice stories around it. A shame that is not in English.

We didn't do the fort only but made a walk along almost the hole wall that protected Peniche. The fortress is not fully restored and since it was used as a political prison it does not give the "feeling" of an ancient fort. But the...More

Impressive..to see how the life in a fascist prison was. To learn, to not Forget. Take your children and let them see and learn gratitude to the ones that fight opression. And enjoy the nearby excelent restaurants for a fish meal :)
