Puffins, Razorbills, and more!
Jul 2019
Like another reviewer you will come across here, I came to Drangey Tours because puffins have eluded me for a long time. I've missed them in Maine, Nova Scotia, Scotland, and even Alaska (technically, I was a few in Ireland, but there, they were just black dots on the water). After the visit to Drangey Island, they've eluded no more. The tour was excellent, and the guide was great. Once you climb to the top of the island, along with some excellent bird watching, you get to hear the story of Grettir the strong, one of Iceland's sagas.

Keep in mind that the climb up Drangey Island is rigorous. From the docks, you start off on some large rocks before getting on a trail. Ropes are there to assist you, and at a later stage of the trail there is a metal handrail attached to rockface. Finally, there is a ladder (also attached to the rockface) to reach the top. On the tour that I was on there were several senior citizens who made the climb, and while we were at the top there was a family, who made the trip separate from the tour, with younger children who made the climb.

Drangey Tours was wonderful to work with and they provided one of the highlights to my Iceland trip.

Best Puffin Visit Ever! Beautiful hike and boat ride.
Jul 2019
I've been to several countries over 3 decades and puffins have eluded me no more. This is THE PLACE FOR PUFFINS! At Drangey Island there are 350,000 resident puffins, and they seem completely undisturbed by the visitors. This is a fantastic trip. The somewhat bumpy boat ride was about 30 minutes in a fairly small but capable boat (some people had to stand, and there is a small, heated indoor area). The dock at Drangey is small and only one boat docks there. Then visitors (we had about 15) climb a steep and rugged climb up to the top, supported at times with ropes. One must be reasonably physically fit to accomplish this and have no more than a moderate fear of heights. If you don't want to do the climb and hike, you could still take the boat ride and remain with the boat or sit on the dock. You will still see puffins but not as many or as dramatically, and you'll be sitting about an hour while the others do the stunning hike. The hike takes you to the top of the plateau, where there is a small hut and the guide provides coffee, tea and chocolate while explaining the history and lore of the place. By the way, this boat tour in no way duplicates a trip to Flatey Island in the west; I was afraid it would be too much boat fun in three days (we spent the night on Flatey). The Flatey ferry is huge and the terrain to Flatey is totally different. So if you're considering doing both, go for it.

stunning views, a great experience, and puffins!
Jun 2019 • Friends
A friend and I visited Iceland in June, and hoped to see puffins. We found a brochure for Drangey Tours, and emailed them at the last minute, and they were able to fit us into a tour for the next morning. The father and son leading the tour were welcoming and friendly, and the hike up the island (which was steep and might be a bit tricky for those afraid of heights) was well maintained, and we felt able to stop and catch our breath and take photos as we climbed. The views from the top were stunning. Puffins were zooming all around us, with many more perched on the cliff edges, and we had plenty of time to relax, enjoy the scenery - just such a beautiful island - and admire the birds. Helgi, our guide, entertained us with stories about Grettir the outlaw, and was very knowledgeable about the island and its history. It was one of our favorite experiences in Iceland, I’d highly recommend.

A dramatic clifftop treat awaits, with puffins, seabirds and sagas galore.
Jul 2019 • Family
One of the highlights of our tour of Iceland this, thanks to Helgi and Viggo of Drangey Tours who (wait for you when you get lost and then) transport you to and guide you up and around this special, dramatic island whose cliffs and steep slopes are a home to millions of seabirds and puffins. The weather was poor but it was still worth every minute: the sights - including a sighting of breaching whales in the distance - sounds and stories of the island's history live on strong in the memory.

Drangeyjarferðir

We didn’t make it to the island, the ride was so bumpy that someone broke their foot. We had to turn back after more than half way there. I’m sure it would have been a wonderful experience to see the puffins.

We went on a tour with Drangeyjarferðir and we definitely recommend to everyone to do that, please be aware if you are scared of hight ... then it´s probably not for you, because you need to climb a little, but for most ppl in good shape this is really worth it.

Adventure tour with thousands of puffins
Jul 2018 • Solo
The last time I was at Grettislaug was in winter, so although I could see Drangey Island there were no boat tours running. So when I knew I was going to be in the area again this summer I made sure to book the tour. I couldn't find a booking option on their website, so I simply contacted them on Facebook.
The tours run from mid May to mid August and cost 13,500 ISK for adults. The boat tour leaves from Reykir harbor between the campsite and Grettislaug pool.
It is well worth the price because you get an exhilarating boat ride to and from the island, an exciting hike up the steep cliffs to the top, have a rest stop with hot drinks, see thousands of puffins and other birds, explore the island and find out about the adventures of Grettir, the outlaw.
Helgi is a great tour guide and story teller and took excellent care of a few people on the tour who were struggling with their fear of heights. His family maintains the walking path and safety ropes on the island and has built the hut and he was able to answer every single question our group could come up with about the birds and the island.
It was amazing to see so many puffins in such a small place, a great opportunity to take pictures and learn more about these birds. It was cloudy and foggy during our tour, but Helgi explained that was actually a good thing, because it meant most of the birds were on the island instead of out at sea.
I absolutely recommend this tour, but you need to be aware that you will be climbing up steep trails and ladders on possibly slippery ground, so it may be a challenge for young children, senior visitors or people with an intense fear of heights. Make sure you have sturdy shoes or boots with good ankle support and traction and hold on to the ropes while climbing up or down.

Go see puffins!!
Jul 2018 • Solo
Drangey Island is a small island in the north of Iceland. If you say Iceland, you say waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes and.......puffins. Yes, say it, it sounds funny. Not only does it sound funny, this weird little bird that is a bit of everything, looks funny, flies funny and seems a little less smart than the average winged creature.

But according to some, puffins are a must, and most of you won't get to see them, without a proper tour on the proper place. We found the Drangey Tours. "We" is not the right word, because there is not enough violence in the world capable of getting my girlfriend on a boat, so it was just me and some others.

Affter some instructions, we got on a boat that took us to Drangey Island in only 10-15 minutes. I had no idea how beautiful it was going to be, until a minute before getting there. It is hard to describe how beautiful the island is. It is pretty steep, like a log in the water. Climbing up, and I mean climbing, will test your fear of heights and please mind proper clothing and shoes.

But more important than just how beautiful and rough this small island is, is how impressive all the birds were and are. The whole side of the island is covered in birds, showing their natural behaviour in their natural surrounding. Not dozens, or hundreds, but tens of thousands if not more. Their noise is deafening and hypnotizing. And this is only the first part.

After being in awe of their numbers and noise, we'd get up on the island to get up close and personal with.......the puffin. This beautiful and not to bright little creature lights up the whole island, where the guide will show you the most beautiful and high places for your perfect picture moment and some background stories that will teach you more about Iceland, and how they treat their fauna.

You can skip this if you don't are for boats or birds, but in a place of wonders, this is one you shouldn't skip. It's too beautiful and too fun.
