Skip the tomato restaurant at Fridheimar and come here instead!
The Fridheimar tomato green house is a very interesting place to visit, to see how Iceland is leveraging its low cost electricity to grow produce year-round. Unfortunately, it's grown quite popular and is a regular tour bus stop. This means that it'll be difficult to walk in and get a table and tour. Well, don't worry! On the same campus is the Vinstofa Wine Bar and it's now my preferred place to patronize over the restaurant. Why? It's quieter, has a more interesting selection of menu items, a full bar (the greenhouse has a bar too), and it is much less crowded!! We arrived at the greenhouse around lunchtime and saw that we couldn't get a seat in the restaurant, and that the wine bar opened shortly. So that solved the problem for us, there we went and we were impressed and very pleased with what we saw, ate, and drank. While they do have a grape vine growing throughout the building, there's unfortunately no plans to make their own wine, but the wine bar takes advantage of the fresh tomatoes and strawberries from the greenhouses to craft an excellent menu. We had the tomato soup (same as the Fridheimar restaurant, except for different toppings), the cheese plate (cheese with handpicked icelandic herbs, blue cheese soaked in their tomato beer, camembert with green tomato jam, gouda with honey and ground coffee, and mozzarella balls), and a bruschetta with smoked local trout. The setting is adjacent to a tomato greenhouse. Our server knew a lot about the Fridheimar operation, having worked there before moving to the wine bar. Given the ambience this is a very good value for dining out in Iceland, and is all-around a great dining experience.

    Gem of a tomato 🍅
After a visit to the Geysir, we fancied a local place for a coffee and something to eat … This place was about a 20min drive from the Geysir and amazing food. Well worth a visit especially the smaller restaurant to avoid the busier main restaurant. Food and staff were great. Much better than being sat with all the tourists at the Geysir 😉 Do yourself a favour , look on line and make your own decision. You won’t regret it 😉

Unique Wine Bar on the Golden Circle
Visited for dinner while staying at nearby Blue Hotel. We found this to be a very interesting and unique wine bar built into a green house wiht 50 year old grape vines growing up the walls and along the ceiling. The waiter was very friendly yet professional and recommended a good wine for us to enjoy. We enjoyed the tomato soup and the cheese and bread board which were excellent. Considering the location and the ambience we felt it offered good value for money spent. Will highly recommend and would not hesitate to visit again if ever in the area.

Pit stop #6 on our Golden Circle self-drive tour. Stopped in a the Vinstofa Fridheima Winebar & Bistro. Originally we had heard great things about their Tomato Soup, so we stopped in to sample just that. 2 hours, 4 courses, 3 bottles of wine and several hundred dollars later we finally pulled ourselves away and continued on our journey. Our waitress, Marti from Prague, was a complete pleasure, put up with 6 guys asking her all sorts of unrelated-to-the-menu questions. Delightful meal, ambiance and setting. It's what dining should be like. If stopping at a farm to have Tomato Soup does not sound interesting to you, think again. Well worth the visit.

It is an incredibly magical place. This is how the smart and excellent should meet. We ate very good dishes (cheese plate az tomato soup) and the most part of the food is home made. The wine menu and selection were good. The books and furniture make a special feeling with the green house environment. If you are plan a trip to Iceland you should come to this magical place.
