- Richard36 contributionsWhite Pass & Yukon Railway with Alaska 360 (also dog mushing and gold panning)We booked this railway excursion with Alaska 360 thru our NCL cruise ship. (It also included panning for gold and a visit to a dog mushing presentation. While both of these were also excellent, I won't review here.) The railway ride up and back was a little over two hours. We had a dedicated guide for our car who provided information and stories throughout the entire trip. Beautiful scenery. Well worth it.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 7, 2023
- GoVols79Chattanooga, Tennessee3,967 contributionsWhite Pass and Yukon Route RailwayDuring our one day in Skagway we rode the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway train. Earlier we had visited the Yukon Gold Rush NHP site in town and the park film was a really excellent way to add context to this train trip and the overall area of Skagway. When starting the trip you will want to be on the left side of the train. Going back everything will be out the right side so both sides get great views but I liked seeing everything on the way up and being able to relax more on the way down. We frequently went on the outside viewing areas for a different perspective. This was a fantastic way to spend our day in Skagway and I would highly recommended it to anyone visiting the area.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 8, 2023
- Steve RBolton, United Kingdom600 contributionsExpensive for such a short trip but a great experienceAround 1:45hrs trip of scenic railroad up through the mountains. It's fun to do but expensive for such a short trip. The best views are on the left side as you face the front of the train. There's lots of grand scenes so take your camera and be ready to snap some picsVisited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 10, 2023

It's one of beautiful scenery but, unfortuately, on my trip the weather did not cooperate and it was cloudy and overcast. Our guide/narrator was full of interesting information but between the poor visibility and the windows which fogged up, we missed a lot. It was a nice ride up the mountain and then back down again. The train was built in the late 1890s and there was an informative booklet about building it at each seat. When we got to the top, the train turned around and we started back down. We booked through NCL and paid $199; I understand it might be cheaper booking directly through White Pass. There were about 460 passengers on our ride; capacity is about 600. We did visit the depot after the train ride and walked around in Skagway.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 10, 2023
- Pam TMansfield, Ohio299 contributionsGo way up into the mountains, great views.Bought ticket in town. Would go EARLY to do so as they sell out. Might be worth buying it ahead of time. Especially in peak season. Ride is awesome. Not wanting to take pix through the windows? They let you go out in between the cars or you can open the upper part of the window and take from there. yes, they have restrooms on board. They also had heat in October. Seats flip over so on the way back you can sit facing forward. You will be asked to trade sides with those opposite of you at the top. This way you will get the full experience no matter what side you sit on. You can get off in town so you can shop. Lots of neat shops and food joints.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten November 9, 2023
- Dimitris LSydney, Australia51,768 contributionsGreat views. The White Pass & Yukon Route Railway dates back to 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, when construction started. It was intended as the best way to reaching the gold fields. After its completion in 1900, it was the way to the interior of the Yukon. The service continued until 1982. Today it’s a tourist attraction and a means to showing visitors the beauty of the surrounding area. There is no shortage of passengers as the cruise ships keep coming and thousands like us line up for long periods to buy tickets and waiting to get on board the train. The ticket fare is very expensive but the short journey is wonderful providing amazing views.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 1, 2023
- DepplepFlorida1,869 contributionsBreathtaking scenery and superb narrationWe took the last train of the season in October 2023. To say it was amazing is an understatement. It has just snowed a few days before we got to Skagway and at the higher elevations there was a few feet on the ground. The narration and wandering guides going throughout the train giving facts and history of the railway and Alaska was invaluable. Gorgeous scenery! The train is very close to the edge for a lot of the trip so if this makes you nervous know that beforehand as it's about a 2hr journey. Well worth our time and money.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 26, 2024
- sstergianisOshawa, Canada101 contributionsAll aboard…next stop the peak of the mountain. You cannot come to Skagway and not take advantage of this 40 mile experience from Alaska in northern British Colombia. Experience old style rail cars while taking in the scenery and history of the Klondike gold rush. The crew are fantastic and knowledgeable. The scenery is by far breathtaking. See Alaska from high elevations from with the mountains. And if you are lucky you may spot a bear. Our train saw 2. Don’t miss out because you think it’s expensive. It was worth the spend.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 4, 2024
- Shawn B1 contributionBest trip!We booked this excursion through our cruise ship, Norwegian Sun. This was one of my favorites, you see so much! Beautiful country! The bus driver , Carter was fantastic as well as all the crew members of the train! The lunch at Carcross was great ! This place had all sorts of animals along with Iditarod dogs with puppies! Definitely worth doing , it’s a long 8 hrs of travel but goes so fast with all the beauty to see!Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 5, 2024
- Nicholas HOrlando, Florida83 contributionsEnjoyable scenery and some great information! We recently experienced WhitePass Railway when visiting Skagway on a cruise and very much enjoyed the tour. We booked through our cruise and they pull a train near the ship to board, which is a little cumbersome as there are so many people getting on at once but the rail staff keep it moving and organized. As we went in early May it was a very cool experience because as you climb the pass you get to experience the greenery of the first to some deep snow. The scenery is beautiful, with some information provided by the tour guides. The trains have aisles of 4 people so two on each side of the aisle, the cars do have a heater so they are not cold as well as a bathroom in each car. There is a small viewing platform on the front and back of each car to allow for you to step out and get a picture or just some fresh air. The train goes up the mountain pass and then does a loop around and then back down the mountain. As it is a mountain pass one side of the train will be on the side that has more of a rock face, but you will be on the other side on the way down so stay in your seat and you will get both views. This is a longer experience, the train does go relatively slow because it is going up/down a mountain but it is very relaxing and enjoyable.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 18, 2024

We selected this tour from the Celebrity Cruise ship. I believe it may be possible to book this tour directly at the station, but I am not sure. Don't get me wrong, the scenery on this trip ( excuse me .... half of a trip) was beautiful. We booked all of our excursions in advance and a couple of weeks prior to the cruise departure we received an email that there was a bridge that was out that allows you to go to the summit, so therefore the trip would only be 14 miles. When you are at the "end of the tour" they essentially move the engine to the other end of the train and you have the same view ( only on one side) on the return trip too. Our train was fortunately not full so I believe everyone was able to view in some form or fashion the beauty of the scenery. The limitation of the tour should have been communicated in a better manner and also in a more prompt manner.... Like before we booked it. I should have read the reviews more closely and realized that this was the situation before booking. We would have most likely either added another excursion or changed to a combination excursion. I am sure that the working crew for the Railway were happy to be working again and have guests on board. It just would have been nice for the everyone to have been transparent about the real length of the tour initially. We did receive a small credit since the trip was literally half the length and time.
The railcars are very comfortable and as stated the views amazing and we were blessed with really nice weather also. The pickup and drop off for passengers was extremely efficient with this being right at the cruise ship terminal. Which also makes it nice for older people that may have mobility issues to be able to take this tour and enjoy the beauty.
Hopefully a redo of this excursion in our future to get to the "top" of the summit for the entire trip.

We were on the train from Ovation of the Seas on 8/22 and as another reviewer stated, we had an accident/derailment near mile 16. The train employees announced “an engine problem” after a loud bang, growling grating noise and braking with sudden stop. The cars each crashed into the one in front. Everyone screeched and people on the platforms between cars were thrown against the car but in our car, startled but unhurt. We were stopped literally 20-30 seconds from the infamous trestle spanning a gorge right before the first tunnel. Had the accident happened just moments later it could have been catastrophic. A passenger overheard a train employee say the front engine had derailed. We were stuck for 2 1/2 hours until a new engine came up with workers and disconnected the damaged engine; coupled up with the back of the train to take us down the mountain. Thankfully, the bench seats in the cars flipped over to face backwards which was now front facing. The unmovable engine remained behind. We were all shaken returning to dock area and a passenger in the end car said people had the worst bumps back there and 2 people were thrown to the floor bumping their heads but were ok. Royal Caribbean was wonderful and had sent several representatives to the docks to make sure we were ok. There were two other trains ahead of us at the trip summit that also were delayed. The engine was eventually moved off the main tracks allowing both trains to descend safely. Our ship delayed its departure until all train passengers were back on board. We promptly received full refunds and headed to the nearest bar! There has been no mention of this incident and the tours continue. It is a breathtaking excursion but travelers should be aware of the risks and the accident history which is nowhere to be found.

Although somewhat expensive at $135 a person for a 25 mile return train ride, I am glad we did this excursion. The scenery was fantastic for the upper 13 miles. As most say the views on the left side up and right side down are best but the train does a loop at the top so you get both sides even if you don't change seats. I spent most of the time on the outside carriage platform where the views are great, although best in the last rear car. If on a cruise, the boarding location is at the end of the dock by a small cafe and was not well sign posted so we initially missed this and had to ask around. Have to admire the gold rush prospectors who took these routes over the mountain pass in the Yukon. Out of our cruise port stops of Skagway, Ketchikan and Juneau, Skagway was by far the best place, just more interesting and scenic, but still touristy and geared to the cruise lines visitors.

We took this Tour with 3 other couples from the Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise. The tour started with a drive through town and a stop at the Gold Rush Cemetery. Commentary was provided and made the drive interesting. The train left at noon so some of us came prepared with sandwiches & water. No food is served on the train, but water is free & bathrooms are available on each car. The 4 1/2 hour train ride was narrated with interesting information on the gold seekers who used the train and the trials of getting to the gold fields by horseback & wagon. Mainly, it is amazing that this rail line was even built when first opinions where that it was impossible to accomplish. The track goes through some rugged, mountainous terrain that is scenic. Snow was still on the ground in June. The tour seemed too long for my husband & I, however, it was a nice respite from the rigors of travel.

The train ride had some nice views but it wasn’t worth the $139.00 it cost. We bought our tkts at the train because RCL sold the trip for $20 higher. A $5 RT shuttle took us into the little town, filled with shop after shop of jewelry. Looking for a place to eat before our 12noon train, only the overpriced Red Onion was found.
I’d looked forward to hearing about the miners & the gold rush on our ride to the summit, but the audio was so bad, we couldn’t hear a word the narrator was saying! We asked the conductor & he said he’d ask her to speak louder…but we never heard a thing. I should have asked for a refund because had I known I’d only have a 3 hr ride with no commentary, I wouldn’t have paid that much money to go. It wasn’t a good experience.

Fantastic views, if you can see them. In our case, the money-shot views were mostly on the other side of the train. Apparently, this isn't a problem if you take the train form the round-trip ride. We got off in Fraser for a bus tour. And, while passengers were encouraged to ride outside on the platform for a few minutes (and admonished to be considerate to others), our train had a couple inconsiderate [offensive terms omitted] completely oblivious to everyone else.

This route is simply impressive, travel in the month of September 2024 and made us a good weather throughout the route. The carriages are comfortable and have their own bathroom. As for the views it is difficult to describe the beauty of the scenery.I recommend going in the spaces outside the cars to enjoy the view and take videos and photographs, when leaving the best views come from the left side, and on the return to the right.

We booked this train excursion from the cruise line at the last minutes because our train excursion was cancelled. This is a very nice and comfortable ride to the peak and back. There is tour guide who tells you the history of the area you're in on the trains PA system. There is no food and only bottled water on this ride. Would recommend.

Great Train ride up the mountain if you can get pass the rude station attendant. We booked this tour directly with the Train Shoppe for $278 for two passengers. It was total chaos getting on the train. They had us move toward the trail cars then this one attendant started screaming at us to get off the track that ran directly in front of the train we were to board. Seems like there was another train coming that they didn't bother to take caution with us. This guy was rude, overbearing and riducously screaming at all the passengers.
The ride itself was very nice. Nice slow train ride up the pass and down. The attendants on the train gave a nice narrative as we went along. It was very enjoyable.

So I’m seeing a couple of comments about the white pass train in Skagway up to the Yukon, and bus back. The suggestions are for bussing back it’s not as scenic. Can anyone comment please thank you

I’m choosing the white pass train up to Canada and bus back. Do you book through the train company. But it seems most people like the train there and back. Wondering if it’s because it is cheaper. I wanted the best possible opportunity to see and animals close up by stopping. Any suggestions thanks so much

Were you on a royal carribean cruise? I'm trying to find out if you walk from the ship to the train terminal, or if there is a bus that takes you. My father in law is 82 and he can't walk that distance. Thanks.

I'm going on a cruise and want to do this white pass, there are 2 options, 1 is the white pass and Klondike hwy. the other the white pass /yukon. Only 1 hour difference. They hwy you take a bus up and train down, the other is train both ways. Which one would be the best?

I personally liked the bus up and train back. Got to get out of bus and see some sights. We saw a grizzly bear on side of road. Bus driver spotted it and pulled over to catch a closer glimpse. You won’t get that on the train.

Can my children ride the white pass train to the summit and motor coach back to skagway with valid birth certificate rather than a passport? ( We are all citizens... parents have passports)
Written July 29, 2023
Passports aren't required if you are doing the roundtrip train, as you do not get off the train. It is stated in the tour descriptions that you need a passport if you are doing the excursion where you ride the train one way and take the bus back. I'd suggest contacting White Pass Railway directly through their website for further info.
