Took Hele-On free trolley plus bus #202 to find this gem. Got there just before noon and greeted by the best hostess ever (no wonder she is so petite as she walks miles each day as super hostess). A lot of regular clientele plus people who sign up for fishing charters. BEST ever Mahi-Mahi fish n chips!!! In 76 years, I have never eaten a better breaded fish n chips. My husband LOVED his 6 breaded oysters, plus his Ahi tuna which came with two sides!! We took the side salad home and enjoyed it two days later with yummy dressing in small plastic container. We returned 6 days later for our "last supper" before the long plane trip and journey back to Canmore/AB. This time I ordered chili on rice and Chris ordered more Ahi Fish n Chips. Same petite hostess with the most-ess greeter and both our serversElizabeth B and Jennifer were terrific. Only problem is not having even an option to enter a 15% tip. The USD is almost 40% higher than our CAD, and food is already notoriously 30-40% higher in Hawaii than at home.

Visiting the harbor as the fishing boats come and go is a fun easy going way to experience the Kona area. Stop at Harbor house for Pupu's and beer

Thought I drove through the Marina on my way from the airport to ascertain where I'd need to be, with dive gear the next morning. Missed their shop though got a good look at private boats and the commercial part of the marina. Good for boats, bring your stuff, know where you're going.

There is a great state beach, Alula Beach, with lots of Turtles that is accessed from this harbor. Also I did my scuba dives on boats from here. 3 different scuba companies. There are lots of scuba and snorkel companies that are based here. Unfortunately, I don't own a boat, so I cannot tell you about the slips and such.

Came here twice this time around, great area for snorkeling and just swimming. Lots of people park near the marina and walk down towards Kona Dog Beach where lots of people brings their pets. Very nice!

Great little small boat harbor. Lots of free parking. Clean and indoor rest rooms. Places to sit in the shade on a bench if you are waiting for some one. Trash cans. This is the small boat harbor where dive boats, snorkeling trips, fishing charters, and the like take off. There are two boat launches. Two sides to the harbor. One side with a dive shop, places to get a cool drink, or a bite to eat. And the other side with great amenities if you need to just hang out and wait for some one to return from a trip. Both sides have free parking.

Check out the boats here. Pick one that suits you and go fishing. There is also a nice restaurant for a good meal and cold beer.

Went with family to this beach as we had been there before. There is a protected bay north of harbor that is shallow, maybe 2-4 feet deep for about 100-150 yards out from beach. It does have a rocky, lava floor and some type of water shoes would be recommended. se All snorkeled for hours and saw many types of fish and yes, there were numerous turtles in the water and on the beach. There is a smaller area that is shallower for small children that also had a lot fish to see in it. Great place to go and too crowded when we were there.

While most folks come to the Honokohau Harbor for boat tours/charter fishing, there’s a lot more to see and do here... there’s a nice restaurant with great food, plus shops for island clothing and fishing tackle as well :)). Many tropical fish hang around beneath the vessels, and turtles pass through too... nautically inclined folks can admire the array of boats docked here, and if you show up around mid day, you might be able to view trophy catches being brought in as well (look for the flags high above the flying bridge to see what species were hooked). Enjoy!

My husband did scuba diving here 3x this week. We also met here for a whale watching tour. The marina is easy to find and ample parking.

I don't know about derby weigh ins as they are set individually by closing time. Generally, look at the times 4 hour fishing trips return and later ones as they are done only if there are really big fish caught. Not done at any time specifically.
