- CZ1143Aurora, Illinois210 contributionsWorth a visitIt is an interesting visit to learn about Hawaii history. Admission is free. We walked about a mile to the beach to see the fish ponds. We saw several turtles and even some dolphins in the distance. For those who don’t want to make the trek, there is an alternative road one can take to the fish pools. The NPS rangers were extremely helpful. We spent about 1.5 hrs, but one could spend longer if you want to hike.Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 13, 2023
- Chandra STexas138 contributionsSea Turtles!!Our family of five from Texas and Oklahoma visited Oahu and the Big Island for Spring Break! My daughter and two grandsons have received many badges from the National Park sites and we were excited to add the Hawaiian Parks to our collections. My favorite at Kaloko-Honolohau was hiking to the tide pools and seeing the sea turtles!! We also saw several of the petroglyphs on the Boardwalk! The Park Ranger working the day we visited was friendly and answered all the questions we had! She also explained some very important Hawaiian Culture and traditions!! It was very interesting to us and she explained it in a way that made sense and was interesting to my 6 and 10 year old grandsons!! I would definitely recommend Kaloka-Honolohau to anyone visiting the Big Island!!Visited March 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 22, 2023
- AKwaterrat44 contributionsAnother hidden jewel in the NPS crownWe wanted to learn more about Hawaiian culture and history while on the Big Island. We stopped in at the park not knowing what to expect and were not disappointed. The entrance is very unassuming and the park is very low key hiding in plain sight. The Visitor's center gives a brief overview of the subject but the real detail is out on the trail, reading the interpretive signs andexamining the various places in the park. The ranger on duty greeted us and pointed out the various options and routes for getting to the locations. Park staff are the unsung heroes of the system. We opted for the self gudied tour following the trail from the Visitor's Center, down to the beach and up to the fish ponds. Taking along water and having a good pair of shoes in essential as the trail is a combination of pavement, dirt, and beach. We came to learn about the island's culture--the information provided by the signs and maps were very illuminating. I like being able to move at my own pace.Visited March 2023Traveled with friendsWritten April 3, 2023
- rubyrjmSaskatoon, Canada19 contributionsInteresting historical siteI (46 yo) visited mid-April with my 12 yo and 14 yo kids. We stopped at the visitor's center for a quick history of the site and then walked the path down to the water. The path is a little rough but was not challenging for us. There is a little boardwalk loop on the path that is not marked and is the petroglyph site. My mom (76 yo) drive down to the water and met us at the beach where we checked out the fish pond and fish trap. She used her walking sticks and had no problem on the lava rocks and sand. We saw two sra turtles and called the visit a success!Visited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 6, 2023
- ticoalraJefferson, Maryland310 contributionsWalking trails, petroglyphs, beaches and turtles! We visited in the morning before we checked out of our condo. We parked on the South side in the harbor and walked to the Ai'opio fishpond. We explored the rocks and then saw 5 turtles sunning themselves. We then walked the path to the petroglyph boardwalk and back to the car. We then drove around to the visitor center entrance before we left. It was a wonderful stop before we changed sides of the island. We were grateful to have gone early.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 1, 2023

It could be much better with more informative guides / rangers who act like they really want to be there . Video presentation was very average and a waste of our time. Highlight was talking to one of the employees ( grounds keeper) who made our trip worth whileVisited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 5, 2023
- Southwest_GauchoLake Havasu City, Arizona1,118 contributionsGreat little park along the shoreline.Stopped in not really knowing what this park had to offer and wish we had stopped earlier on our visit to Hawaii. Lots of information here and walking but didn't have the time to take it all in on this trip. Highly recommend good walking shoes, hats, sunscreens, and water. Found the southern entrance down by the small boat harbor and checked out the beach down there and turtles. Very cool. Would return for some beach time and snorkeling. Worth stopping if you're in the area.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 3, 2023

So we ended up at a beach very close by, seeing many many turtles! That beach was absolutely stunning! Don't hesitate to add this visit to your travelling plans! Close to the airport (this can help you decide when you go).Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 14, 2023

Short drive from Kailua, easy to find. Very nice small national park, it is well maintained and has knowledgeable rangers on duty who give informative historical presentations every hour. Very sacred place with beautiful scenery. Also steps away from one of the best snorkeling spots in the island, 2 step beach.

The main visitor center is nice and has a little souvenir area, rangers to talk to and lots of different passport stamps!
But, wow. It’s an incredibly rough gravel road to get out to the far parts of Kaloko Honokohau NHP. I wouldn’t recommend attempting it in a car or anything with a low suspension. We were in a mid-size SUV and even that was rough. There wasn’t a whole lot to see once we got out there, just the fish ponds. This is probably one of the places I’d recommend skipping if your time on the Big Island is limited. We really enjoyed Pu’uhonua o Honaunau much more.

Did you walk from the Kailua-Kona cruise port? Do you know if there are any taxi's that will take you there (my 84 year old mother will be with us).
Thanks for you help!

It appears there are two ways to access the beach - one through the park and the other by walking north from near Honokohau Harbor. Which is the best route?

The route from the Park Display and Historical Site is about a 4 mile walk using a very hot paved sidewalk. Do not go through that route. There is a very short route via the marina. Enter the marina and go to the right part of the marina, first right turn. Proceed around the bend to the west end of a very large parking lot. There, you will find a gate into the park. Park your car and proceed through the gate. Go left, west towards the ocean and follow that paved path. You will walk about 1/2 mile onto the beach. Enjoy the turtles, they are amazing.

We will have a t 3 yr old and a 1 yr old and a 9 yr old and three grandmothers!!!
I think we would be able to do this park if it is not too difficult to get around in.
We will be living in a home over by Beach 69 in Kona area while the children's parents are taking their vacation. How far would this be for us to travel? Could we do this in a day trip?
