We went up for the sunset and it was beautiful, but they only allow you to go up until sundown so we didn't get to see the full glow of the volcano spout. We wished we could have stayed to see the lava in the...More

We rented a 4WD jeep for the week so we drove ourselves. We opted to go early. The visitor's center does not open until noon. We stopped there anyways to acclimate before driving to the top. The drive to the top was not bad (we...More

Mauna Kea Summit Adventures is a great company to work with. First try, we made it to the summit in pouring rain and thick cloud. Guide/driver Maka did a great commentary on history and geology on the way and kept us safe on the summit...More

We loved the summit. A highlight of our trip and a beautiful spot to see. We took a tour but I saw a lot of people in their cars, watching the sun go down (and looking warmer than me). A must do. We didnt feel...More

We heard there was 1 company that hires cars to the summit of Mauna Kea. When hiring the car through Harpers they were very strict with checking prior damage on the vehicle - it seemed a little extreme and had us worried. Once we were...More

We went to the summit with Hawaii Forrest and Trail. We stopped at the visitors area and watched the stars. The clearest star gazing I have ever done. We could see satellites go by. We could also see the red glow of the fissures that...More

Never went to top - just to mid point at Visitors Center and glad we did. The area around the back was diverse with plants and just a sacred place to be. Even there the altitude could be an issue for some folks.

Mauna Kea cannot be missed if you visit the Big Island! The drive up takes you above the clouds, and the stars are without equal. I've seen them from many of the worlds remotest places from Siberia to the Rockies, and Mauna Kea is immeasurably...More

I went to the summit using Arnott's Lodge Tours, but there are many others available, all having 4 wheel drive for the last leg of the trip. View was something else, 80 miles to the north one could see the top of Maui showing through...More

We rented a 4 WD to drive to the summit. However, the road was closed due to dense fog. If you are wanting to do this, check the weather for your time in Hawaii and go on an appropriate day. We waited until the end...More

We used our own 4WD vehicle. Although I would disagree that was needed. There are so many people that driving the road at dark is not an issue, we’ll illuminated by all the headlights. 8 hours is an awfully long time to... More
