This form of racing, in which horses have to haul weighted sledges up sand ramps while being repeatedly lashed, is cruel. It's not like horse racing in other countries.

Amazing spectacle. Very cheap to get in 100 y. Horses pulling heavy sleds on a sand track. Very unique.

Obihiro now holds the only draft horse races in Japan. Draft horses, once the power that made farming in Hokkaido possible, can show their power. A slower-paced race that incorporates strategies like brief resting and surging to pull ahead for the win. Definitely worth a...More

A fun day at a very different race course. Instead of running fast the horses pull heavy weights up and over ramps and through a sand trap. You can bet on the race and there are people to help you with the betting machines.

This is a tourist attraction with many small but cosy restaurants. The races itself were funny but uninspiring. The gambling facilities were old such as the people gambling :) Another downside is the lack of English Instruction (as in all Japan) which makes it difficult...More

This event only happens Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. This is not a traditional gambling venue. It's actually quite family friendly. There is a farmer's market right outside the race track with small restaurants. There is also a small area with small animals for the children....More

I was looking forward to this but ended up feeling bad for the horses. I expected an exciting race, but the horses have to pull such a heavy weight that they walk quite slowly. Some of the horses collapse when pulling the weight up the...More

This is a race of colossal Clydesdale like horses pulling heavy sleighs. They are actually of the French percheron variety. It in November so a bit cold. It was not very crowded and the stands were empty. Most people were in the betting and eating...More

These are cargo horses, not the usual racing horses. The "race" was super slow, but very exciting. At time I felt bad for the horses, the load they put on them must be extremely heavy. They would go, then stop for a while and start...More
