We saw the most fascinating birds and thoroughly enjoyed our ride through. Birds in water; birds flying over head, birds perched on grass - yay birds! Yes, there were a lot of bugs and a couple spots where the smell was almost unbearable.

It is likely that you'll be the only car on the wildlife drive. The route is long (circa 12 miles) so allow plenty of time. This is primarily a driving route and you may find insects a problem if you leave the car for very...More

Still a lot of birds but in limited numbers. We drove through the refuge starting around 8am. Birds are more visible and active. This time of year the refuge is pretty dry so most of the birds are water fowl. Saw White Pelicans, Stilts, Cinnamon...More

Went later in the day as suggested by the Bear River website. This was a mistake as the visitor center was closed and we could not get any information about the best places to go. However we decided to go it on our own and...More

I didn’t know this was here, but I saw the signs and stopped at the Visitors Center. Very nice exhibits and a great 20 minute movie. I drove around the area and it was very interesting and enjoyable. I would have driven the auto tour,...More

This is a birders paradise. The visitors center is great and very educational and has a short nature walk around some marshes. The 12 mile auto-loop is fantastic. The staff is friendly and helpful. We went two times during our stay and ended up spending...More

Drove five hours to visit Refuge last Saturday because the web site said it would be open the Fourth Saturday of every month. WRONG! The Center was closed for some reason and we weren't the only ones waiting outside the gate to go in. At...More

So much to see and hear! I was here middle of March and got to watch a bald eagle fly overhead while flocks of pelicans and tundra swans graced the waters. Came again early May and the scene was different - drier, but still alive...More

We visited the refuge one afternoon in mid-May after a trip to Yellowstone, so perhaps I was a little spoiled by then. Plus I also live in Texas near three very incredible refuge areas that I visit very often. So I might be very spoiled!...More

The indoor area is great--birds and animals and tons of stuff to learn. Perfect for all ages! Staff are super nice too. The outdoor wetland walk is an easy one, great for running too! And of course the scenery is beautiful.

The answer is yes to all of your questions. Go before five for the visitors center. Bring a large telephoto lens for photography. Binoculars id you are just viewing. Most wildlife doesn't come close.
