Just two weeks before Christmas, we expected to identify maybe 10 birds at the refuge. This isn't exactly high time for birding. However, we were surprised to be able to identify nearly 40 birds, including a Barn Owl, many Pheasants, Bald Eagles, Golden Eagle, many...More

We got here on a Sunday when the Visitor Center was closed, but we were able to pick up a couple of brochures and drive through the Bird Sanctuary. There weren't as many birds as I had hoped for although we did see several white...More

The staff at the visitor's center was helpful. However, it is about a 12 mile drive from the visitor's center to the refuge. With any wildlife refuge, visitor's are at the mercy of the wildlife and unfortunately I didn't see much. Much of the refuge...More

We saw the most fascinating birds and thoroughly enjoyed our ride through. Birds in water; birds flying over head, birds perched on grass - yay birds! Yes, there were a lot of bugs and a couple spots where the smell was almost unbearable.

It is likely that you'll be the only car on the wildlife drive. The route is long (circa 12 miles) so allow plenty of time. This is primarily a driving route and you may find insects a problem if you leave the car for very...More

Still a lot of birds but in limited numbers. We drove through the refuge starting around 8am. Birds are more visible and active. This time of year the refuge is pretty dry so most of the birds are water fowl. Saw White Pelicans, Stilts, Cinnamon...More

The answer is yes to all of your questions. Go before five for the visitors center. Bring a large telephoto lens for photography. Binoculars id you are just viewing. Most wildlife doesn't come close.
