This is a recreation of a farm building that was at the center of the Battle of Brooklyn, the first and largest battle in terms of troops and casualties fought by the Continental and British Armies. The American Revolution would have ended here because of a failure to anticipate which direction the British Army would take after they landed in an attempt to decimate the Continental Army. Thanks to favorable winds and the presence of fishermen from New England, what was left of the Continental Army was able to escape at night by boat to what is now Manhattan. This small building, which is next to a playground and a ball field, is located where the precursor to the Brooklyn Dodgers had a stadium. It is adjacent to the Park Slope Historic District, the largest landmarked district in NYC that is noted for its numerous well preserved century old brownstones, and to the avenue where most of this historic neighborhood's restaurants and shops are located. It is a short walk from Grand Army Plaza and Prospect Park and close to several subway lines.
One could spend a full day in the area visiting the Old Stone House, the Park Slope Historic District, Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.

The Old Stone House sits on the site of the last battlefield of the Revolutionary War... George Washington led his troops through this site. Is fully restored and fantastic. The Park also sits on the site of the FIRST WORLD SERIES baseball game played in Brooklyn.

I found the museum interesting, definitely geared toward children, to learn about the Battle of Brooklyn and the colonial period. The history of the house is very interesting, although the interior is not original. There are several displays that give a flavor of the colonial period as might have been experienced by those who lived in the house. The Battle of Brooklyn is also shown and described in an interactive map, which I found very helpful for understanding why the battle was there, and how it unfolded. The people who run this are very dedicated and are continually making it better. It is adjacent to a playground for kids, a park, and a great neighborhood.

As a Revolutionary War buff, I had looked forward to a visit, as the Old Stone House was a waypoint in the Battle of Brooklyn. The house is not actually from the time period nor is it in the original location. The exhibits took me a total of 12 minutes to appreciate. There are six displays, and an audio exhibit with locals reading from important documents, and there is a diorama of the Battle. The gift shop is three shelves of books and toys next to the entry desk.

Second floor display was taken up by a local artist’s pictures of African-American entertainers which was nice but not related to the history of the house in any way.

If you’re a history buff with an interest in George Washington or the Battle of Brooklyn AND happen to be in walking distance, by all means-stop by. This is not a destination worthy of traveling to.

Suggested donation is $3.

The House happens to be in the middle of a great city park for little kids with things to play on and run around and a large soccer AstroTurf field to run on. Parking is difficult on weekends.

If you want a qucik, informative, child friendly dose of museum/ American history on your visit to Brooklyn the Old Stone House will fit the bill. Located in the heart of Brooklyn, between 2 large playgrounds, the Old Stone House Museum, is on the actual site and is an exact replica (rebuilt in the 1800's) of the stone home that sat at that location the day of the largest battle of the American War for Independence, the Battle of Long island. At this location the "Maryland 400" held off the entire British army allowing the rest of the American army to escape and fight another day.

The Old Stone House was a significant location early in the Revolutionary War. (Be sure to read about The Maryland 400!) It is a small building with exhibits that are interactive. Next to the house there is a wonderful park for kids. There are public bathrooms on the side of the house.

This museum, housed in a recreation of a Revolutionary era house, combines history, art, occasional programming for kids and adults. It's a truly modest place - could take you about 20 minutes maximum to check it out - but it's sweet and unique for the area. The gardens outside are nice, and it adds a special touch to the local park which is visited by so many local families. If you are checking out the Fifth Avenue food scene in Park Slope, it would make a nice stop.

Early on a Sunday morning, my family and I visited the "Old Stone House". I am grateful to the powers that restored this little gem of history in Brooklyn. The house is settled in the center of a neighborhood park. Gardens, playgrounds, ball fields, and an open air market are all around it.

The staff is friendly and helpful. If you have a group, you should call ahead.

The house remains from the Battle of Brooklyn. The Maryland 400 fought a viscious battle with British forces in 1776 during the American Revolution. The Americans lived to fight another day, but the Marylanders were lost. Carroll Gardens were named in their honor after the Maryland Signer of the Declaration of Independence.

A very interesting piece of history, hard to imaging standing in same place as where the Revolutionary War took place.
Be ready to read a lot to be able to truly benefit. They appear to be working towards vast improvements in displays, so drop a few bills in their donations.
It's situated in the middle of a very busy park - wonderful to see and hear all the activities going on in this Brooklyn neighborhood:)

It's a small house placed in a park but it's worth a visit because it placed just on the border between the residential area and the old industrial one. I enjoyed the visit and the wall in the neighborhood
