Overview
More
Trail Breaker Kennel is one of Alaska's legendary dog sled kennels. The kennel was established in 1974 by the late Susan Butcher, a four time Iditarod champion, and her husband David Monson, a Yukon Quest champion. By opening its doors in the summer, the kennel shows visitors what it is like to be a musher in the interior of Alaska. Starting in 1993, Trail Breaker Kennel became a favorite stop on the Riverboat Discovery tour. Visitors are treated to a dog mushing demonstration on the shore of the Chena River. After, at the Chena Indian Village, they meet the people and dogs who make up this champion kennel. For tickets and more information visit riverboatdiscovery.com. Walking tours of Trail Breaker Kennel are offered daily at 7:30pm through Holland America Princess Tours. Make your reservation in person before 5pm at the Tour Desk at the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge or Westmark Fairbanks Hotel & Conference Center. Tours cannot be booked online or over the phone.

Situated just outside Fairbanks, this was a memorable experience. Greeted by the owner David Monson we were shown around by experienced mushers and enjoyed a dog sled ride in the snow for two. The site in winter was blanketed in snow, but during the summer...More

Very interesting demonstrations on dog sledding. Part of the River Boat Discovery tour. We did not get off the boat here, just a short demonstration. However I do believe they offer a more extensive tour for those who visit them separately.

We visited Trail Breaker Kennels with a tour group of 34 people. We had scheduled the " back stage" tour, and we're very glad we did. I learned SO much about the process of training dogs, and humans, to run races, most notably the Iditarod...More

Our tour group of 40 enjoyed an "on property" tour and presentation given by a young, female musher from the 2015 Iditarod. Saw the dogs up close, cuddled the 2 week old puppies and had a really nice private lunch. Very informative.
