Overview
More
Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

Stopped by the house at the entrance and grabbed a map which helped us navigate and find the most photographed graves. Lots of history.

Downloaded the App for 4.99 - worth it. It guides you around the cemetery. I love old cemeteries as the tell a lot of stories. Very large family plots with a lot of different styles - well worth the visit.

Wow, this was so beautiful and such a haven for us budding photographers. Go earlier in the day, take a cab or uber (approx $9) from the Historic District. The people in the office were AMAZING, super friendly and helpful. We opted to buy the...More

Not only is it of great historic interest but it is also a great place to be! Good to visit on a hot day, shady trees and a soft breeze from the river.

Our guide for this tour was the best local historian that we encountered on our tour. We had several other walking tours but this was a cut above. And they pick you up at your hotel.

Very old, well-known cemetery. Voted most beautiful in the world. The oaks with the moss combined with all the lovely statues and old fences make it hard to argue.

This place is a very interesting place to just stroll and appreciate the different cultures, the different headstones, dates, names, so see the family sections, the private mausoleums, the huge old live oaks with the Spanish moss draping down, etc. It is almost mystical in...More

If you are in Savannah and have time, this is a must visit location. Do a little pre-trip research on the history and notoriety of Bonaventure before you get there. I would also recommend grabbing a map from up front if you plan to self-tour.

One of the midnight tours has champagne at the end of the tour so yes, you're allowed to drink champagne. I think if you were on your own tour and making a spectacle of yourself then you might be asked to stop drinking and... More

This is a "long" stroll. "..plenty of benches" is a stretch, but there are a few and it can be driven through as well. Bring water and you will love it. It's very shaded. Enjoy
