I live nearby and all I can say is the difference in visiting at night and during the day is well... Night and Day. Last night was a mass shooting, and today we shopped for wonderful deserts just a few blocks away.

We used to run to south street when visiting Philadelphia. This time we were surprised to see so many store fronts closed. The food wasn’t all that good. And even during the day the streets didn’t seam very safe. There were 3 sex shops too many for our liking. I hope when COVID gets contained that the place get refurbished

South Street is nowhere near what it was just a few years ago. Large number of boarded up and abandoned properties, trash everywhere, some homeless people sitting on steps of closed stores. A few stores, bars and restaurants are still open, but nothing worth wasting your time to go there for.we were there on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon and the sidewalks were basically deserted. Parking is expensive and there are no public restrooms anywhere. Don’t waste your time or your money going there.

Pre-pandemic this place was a hustle bustle. My friend and I visited when we were about to see an end to the pandemic. There were obviously fewer people but we can see it coming back. The nice stores and the whole atmosphere is almost there. Look forward to the next visit to see everything going back to normal.
Do your homework before coming as there are so many places with great food. We went to Marrakesh and OMG, it was so good!

South Street is like a vein, it carries the blood and life. It's the major entertainment and social thoroughfare of South Philadelphia. It is busy at some times, quaint and quiet at others. It has old brick, new modernist, and tons and tons and tons of urban art and creativity. The glass murals stretch out from the Magical Gardens in the surrounding alleys and streets so be curious and don't be afraid to go off and back on the street by hitting the side streets. There is every manner of fun under the sun in this all encompassing street. You cannot go to South Street without seeing the murals, Lorenzos pizza, Bob & Barbara's dive bar, and the Tattooed Mom.

We have been down to South Street a few times over the summer and early fall, during the Covid-19 pandemic. We found lots of empty store fronts and lots of litter in the streets/sidewalks. Also, several homeless people were spotted laying on the sidewalks and in abandoned store entry/doorways. We did see one improvement in that several restaurants had opened up outdoor seating on the sidewalk or part of streets during Covid.
Overall, South Street is NOT what it once was. Only reason I still go here is to get some of Lorenzo's legendary MEGA slices! I would not recommend except for the occasional visit to grab some excellent pizza.

We went just as things were opening up post-Covid, so we knew some things wouldn't be open yet. There was a lot of activity on the street, despite this. We did pop into a few stores (and found Rita's, our favorite place on Earth as of now), but at night this was a sketchy area. We were with our 15 year old daughter, and I felt safer having her on Bourbon Street at night 2 years ago.
During the day, it's OK with certain aged kids,, but avoid at night.

South Street is probably Philadelphia's most famous street. It is known for restaurants, bars, and, of course, sex shops. I never had a bad experience on South Street including an evening where two other guys and I went bar hopping with one of my friends for his bachelor party in 2017. It is an interesting street.

We found South Street to be dirty with lots of bars and sex shops. Not what we thought it would be. Don't recommend it.

Charming room. Good food. mediocore wine ( and cheap glasses). Pleasant and talented wait staff ( all classically trained singers who perform an operatic selection every 20 minutes or so) Hajeong (sp?)was helpful and talented.

The South Street is not just a street, it's a promenade sight... There are many hotels near-by it. And all of them are rather good, and classy.
I would prefer these among others: Alexander Inn, Morris House Hotel, Doubletree by Hilton Philadelphia Center City. One could easily find them in google search - enjoy!

Does anyone remember "the south street walk"? It was a festival in the 1970s. They allowed vendors of antiques and other cool stuff, to set up. There were bands, etc. I'd love to see another. Even the king of hearts was in the theater.
