The attractive Christ Church is a national historic landmark and a unique historic site attracting a huge number of visitors each year. It was founded in 1695 by members of the Church of England, who built a small wooden church on the site. It played an integral role in the founding of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States. In the late 1700's and early 1800's the church's 196-foot tower and steeple was the tallest structure in the United States. Worth a visit.

Made the contribution of $10 to go in and see the inside of the church. The money goes to maintenance of this historical site so we didn’t find it offensive especially since the founding fathers paid a lease amount for their pews! Brian, our educator, was very informative with lots of information and stories that we would never have heard! Overall a very good stop in our visit to Philly.

I never heard of paying to get into a church lol. Even worse, they closed the cemetery because of "air quality".

We stopped in for 30 mins if that. Church is beautiful, full of history. Teen son liked to search out all the plaques of famous people who attended and find where they sat. Workers very helpful and knowledgeable.

This was a lovely little church packed full of history. I don’t know if the educators were staff or volunteers but they were really knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the church’s history, famous past worshippers and the history of Philadelphia. It was a really interesting visit and lovely to talk with people who knew so much.

Very historical. It’s free to go in or you can give a donation or pay for a tour. We just walked around and looked ourselves and that was sufficient if your are looking for free things to do.

This church as many others is an important part of American heritage. You can sit in the pew that George Washington sat in!

I stop by this church during my walk through the streets of South Phila. This church's is rich in history and if walls could talk what would they say. This place saw a lot of our history take place still in use today. Sometimes it pays just to walk around you will never know what winders you will find to take time a smell the roses.

Because the church is still an actively worshipping congregation, and the docents actually pray there on Sundays, the large collection of what would otherwise be museum artifacts becomes alive. It is also a lovely structure.

What is the exact address to Christ Church (for our GPS)? Can we see the church and cemetary without joining a tour? If so, what would be the cost?

I don't have an exact address, but as you can see in previous posts, Google is your best friend! As for touring it on your own, yes! I don't recall if they even have formal tours, but there was a caretaker (or a very nice gentleman who looked over the gift shop - which is right in the entrance as you walk in). This gentleman came into the church part and started striking up conversations with the visitors. He was very knowledgeable about the history and whatnot. There was no fee to pay to get in, but they did have donation boxes set up for you if you wished to contribute. It was interesting, and if you can get the caretaker involved with answering a question or two, then it is a very enriching experience.
