We were so impressed with this small museum in Willcox. We were greeted by a curator(Cathy) who gave us a summary of local history and explained the layout of the museum. She also checked on us halfway through to see if we had any questions and offer more information on how Cochise’s relatives have contributed to the museum.

There is so much great information about the Apaches, especially Cochise and Geronimo up through the time the tribe was moved to Florida and then Oklahoma. There’s also information on ranching in the area. I would highly recommend setting aside an hour or two to see this museum. Cost is only $3 per couple.

The volunteer on duty was an historian and knew a lot about the area and the people. We could have stayed there all day talking with her. The museum itself has a lot of stuff, and really could be curated better. I'm not saying it was bad, just that there is room for improvement in organization. We really enjoyed our visit and recommend it.

We wanted to go to the Rex Allen Museum but it closed early because they said they hadn’t seen anyone in a couple hours. We told them we came all the way from South Florida and they didn’t care, so we walked around the corner to the Chiricahua museum and were not disappointed. The volunteer at the front desk was a 6’2” cowboy who was probably 80 years old and more authentic than any Rex Allen. He was so cool and showed us around the museum, telling stories and entertaining us. It was such a great surprise. I hope you get to meet him. His wife is a historian who works across the street at the archives. Well worth the trip to Willcox.

I guess I feel a touch defensive at people wanting the dusting or lighting to improve. This is a small , mostly personal journey to preserve history and give our grandchildren a chance to learn.
It is very modest at $3 for a couple, will that pay the electric bill? They also tell people if you can’t afford still please come learn. He was 81 years old a wealth of valuable knowledge but no dusting wasn’t a priority.
Appreciate the culture, ways , stories, pictures, a time machine to another time.
Did you know Edgar Rice Burrows (Tarzan) came from the area? Fantastic collection of his original books.
Did you know ~~ Elbys Hugar built this temp hut she was Chief Cochise great granddaughter.. it was blessed with dancing and sprinkles of pollen. She also shadow wrote The Missing and stayed with Tommy Lee Jones so his role was true to the Chiricahua Apaches.
We need to support small museums , small town America, teach , never quit learning.
Maybe someone could help write a grant to strengthen this knowledge.
Worth your time ~ promise you will leave knowing more than when you arrived.

I wish I could rate this place higher, as I am aware of how difficult it is to rely on donations and volunteers to run this small storefront space. There is much information about Cochise, Geronimo and the Chiricahua Apaches, and if one knows little, one can learn much here. However, the Museum definitely needs more lighting and a good dusting. When one gets towards the back, it's hard to read some of the boards, and the layers of dust made me sneeze and sneeze. The elderly volunteer seemed concerned (about all my sneezing), and I did not have the heart to tell her that this place needs a good cleaning and airing out.

My husband enjoyed it more than I did, but he watches Western Movies, and reads books on the history of the West. To him, much was familiar. We spent about half an hour there. Wish they had more money for light bulbs.

Admission is a very modest $3.00 per couple.

I am rating this so highly because it exceeds all expectations for a small storefront, privately endowed, volunteer operated Museum. There is a wealth of information about local settlers and Indian history. It is clear that this community has worked diligently to preserve their heritage. Definitely worth making a visit at this local museum.

This wonderful little museum -researched and staffed-entirely by volunteers is a treasure
It’s a real example of how local history doesn’t have to be small-minded but can capture the stories of people of all colours and backgrounds
And there are some world-class stories here! Who knew about Mae West and her relationship with the boxer Chalkey Wright the descendant of a black homesteader and former slave to help to settle the region? Or of how Cochise and Geronimo saw the ‘winning of the west’? Some fantastic artefacts too.

Simple building that has tons of artifacts from rocks to art work original Navajo/Chiricahua clothing ,medals and pictures. Only a few bucks donated gets ya in and there is a volunteer on site to answer any questions. Place could use a dusting but very informative! Stop in if you have time.

If you have been to Fort Bowie, the Indian info here will enhance your experience. Lots of things on Geronimo and Cochise. The museum is tired but has some great info to see and read. $2 for admission and we just wandered around on our own.

We booked a tour of Faraway Ranch at Chiricahua monument. The tour was free and it is offered twice a day, 11:00 and 2:00. Susan and Patrick were our tour Rangers and they were great! The tour involves the ranch building and surrounding grounds. The building Iskept as it was when bought by the Park Service. This includes artifacts from the late 1800 up to the 1970's, quite a contrast. The Rangers were very knowledgable and made the tour both educational and fun. Thank you Rangers Susan and Patrick.
