About
Avoid the traffic of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge by taking the free ferry to Staten Island, where you can marvel at the beauty of New York’s coastline along the way. The iconic orange ferry sails right through New York Harbor and is one of the best ways to see the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. Snap photos, watch life pass by, and even look out for the Brooklyn Bridge in the distance. Upon arrival in Staten Island, be sure to visit the National Lighthouse Museum and the Empire Outlets mall, located right next to the terminal. – Tripadvisor

Free trip to see the Statue of Libery and New York skyline
A great free way to see the Statue of Liberty and New York skyline. The Ferry entrance is near the subway. You have to join a large queue, then you can find seats inside and out with go8d views. It's totally free and a great ex0erienc3

Free boat ride - statue of liberty.
Free boat ride, good view of the statue of liberty and some outlet shopping at the other side. All good really. 5 stars. We travelled outside at the rail but plenty of seating inside and out.

A must on a tour of NYC
It’s a must. Try to go on one of the newer ferries I think as the older ones have less observation spaces. Board on the right if you’re leaving Manhattan to see lady Liberty. What’s not to love ? It’s free !!

    Free Staten Island Ferry Ride
Ferry itself was great. Second time I have done it. Was a huge crowd waiting to board the ferry and was all a bit of a rush for the best observation spots. Was same on the way back. Understandably they make everyone get off on arrival and you have to reboard to make the return trip but it would have been nice to stay on board. Photo opportunities of the Statue of Liberty good as well as of course the New York skyline. Warning to visitors unfamiliar with New York is that if you come from the commercial ferry side there are many ticket touts who are rather convincing that the only option you have is a ticket on one of their ferries. Believe a lot of people are caught out not knowing the Staten Island free ferry options. Yes perhaps you don't go right up to and around the island on the free option but in reality you will get almost as good a view as the paid commercial ferry option.

Free! A great way to see the Statue of Liberty
If you're not bothered about the immigration museum then there is no need to pay for a trip to the Statue of Liberty. Just take the free, every 30mins ferry to Staten Island for great views and not too busy. Just beware of the street entertainers outside the ferry terminal who con you for money - they promise a lot but are scammers.

    A must do in NYC
One of the best free experiences we did in New York. Excellent views of the statue of liberty and skyline of Manhattan. An absolute must, my family thoroughly enjoyed and the ferry waws so frequent. One point I would make though is directly outside the ferry terminal are sales people for the statue of liberty tours. They tried to put us off the ferry by telling us "this ferry takes you to another borough, is this really where you are looking to go, I am just offering this as free information for you, the boat takes you to a completely different borough". If I wasn't aware of this type of sales tactic from previous reviews it may have swayed me to wonder if it was the right ferry. I thanked them for their free information but told them I was happy with the trip I was taking.

One of the few free things to do in NYC - excellent
Although I have been to the Big Apple on a number of occasions over many years I have never taken the famous Staten Island Ferry. So, back in June my son & I decided to correct this and we headed down to the terminal at the southern end of Manhattan and joined the crowds of people in the terminal moving slowly but surely onto the next ferry (they come every 15 - 30 minutes or so during the main part of the day outside the rush hour periods). What everybody likes is that this is free. And the ferries are quite big so even when there are a lot of people you can still find a place to sit down. We did so and made sure that we sat on the starboard side so that we could get a good view of the Statue of Liberty. The crossing over to Staten Island is just over 5 miles & doesn't take so long really, ca. 25 minutes or so. I'm so glad that we finally made this trip (and back of course). Another thing ticked off the bucket list...

    Awesome Ride
Awesome free ferry. Short ride to nyc and had amazing views. We also got to see the Statue of Liberty. The ride back at night is amazing as well. The city looks so beautiful full of lights.

Free ferry to Staten Island which gives you good views of the Statue of Liberty!
Free ferry to Staten Island which gives great views of the Statue of Liberty. It's busy and crowded but it's a short ride and you should be able to get a seat. When travelling from Lower Manhattan go to the right hand side of the ferry if you want to see the Statute of Liberty, and if travelling from the Staten Island end, then sit/stand on the left side of the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty.

Free Ferry to Staten why not
Unreal. I can't believe how orchestrated 1000's of people got on/off this Ferry. Best of all: free. come to find out it's provided as part of the MetroCard fares. There is plenty of room for hundreds/thousands (5,000 max) per ride. Excellent views of the Statue of Liberty, Excellent views of west-lower Manhattan as you set sail to Staten. You can see the Brooklyn Bridge. Let me repeat: free. Otherwise you could pay up to $15 driving from Staten to Manhattan.

A much enjoyed trip. No ticket needed - just turn up and board. Boarding looks mad with the queues but was easy both ways - plenty of seats available and some fabulous views. A must I feel.

Nice and easy journey between Staten island and Manhattan. Great views of the city and the Statue of Liberty and it's FREE!

We lucked out with our timing as parking on site on a Sunday is also free.

Boarding feels a little chaotic as it's a free for all to get a good spot to take in the views. Quite easy to get split up due to the crowds and bottlenecks so watch out and keep a close eye on your group.

I have seen the statue of liberty 2 different ways. The first time was on the ferry to Lady Liberty and to Ellis Island. The second time was on a tour boat of the harbor. This time, I read many reviews about how the Staten Island Ferry was the way to go and was FREE. We waited 15 minutes for the ferry and enjoyed a 15-minute ride to Staten Island where we disembarked and went inside the terminal and recorded the ferry and headed back to Manhattan. 1 hour long and free trip. There are great views of the City and the Statue. This was by far the best of the 3 ways to see her without getting too close and spending too much time. After our ferry trip, we saw a very long line waiting for the Statue ferry. There is no way I would have waited in the line for over an hour.

Sunset cruise for FREE! See Lady Liberty. Get on the NJ/Hudson side of the boat to see it best! It was the right side both ways for us. It takes 30 min there and back plus 30 min wait for each boat.

After I have seen the reviews of the company who brings the tourists to Liberty & Ellis islands and I have seen the queue before opening hours I decided to skip it.. although I really wanted to go to the immigration museum. But Staten Island ferry gives you the perfect ride to admire the islands and the Lady, close enough and free of charge. It is a must! Don’t let yourself ripped off do this ferry unless you want to tour the Lady at any costs.

Having visited New York 17 years ago, I had been inside the Statue of Liberty but didn’t really think all that much of it. I visited again this month but this time with my wife and she of course wanted to see it. This ferry does the job, it runs every 20 or so mins and gets you close enough to the Statue of Liberty as well as fantastic views of the Manhattan skyline…. All for free.

This is a way to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island if all you want is to see them up close but not get off there. The Ferry goes by both. Stand on right side going then left coming back. You can get off and run around to get back on but you must exit, you cant stay on. Did I mention its FREE?
