Neighborhood: Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.

It's always fun to walk down this street and window shop. I think it's tough to get an excellent deal but if you know what you want you may find it here.

90% of the nation's diamonds will find their way through NYC, or so the tour guides will tell you. This district is full of retailers and wholesalers and diamond experts and crafters. If you just want to browse, then the street level storefronts are fun. However, if you plan to make a purchase, especially one of significance, then do your research. If you know anyone in the industry, seek their advice before you go. There are deals to be made here, but as usual, you got ta find them.

Wow – what a visit! It was only my second trip to this incredible street (47th Street), and I was ogled by all the gold and diamonds. I priced out a necklace that I wanted, but it was still a little bit high for me. But there were some necklaces over $1 million….wow!!! This place is definitely worth a walk to see for yourself. It also has great prices on more moderate jewelry, but you should be ready to deal a bit, as they will come down in price somewhat.

I always visit here when I am in NYC. I only buy gold earrings, so I don't know about the rest of the jewelry but if you are willing to engage with various dealers and dig through trays of 14K gold earrings, it's great. I also look for vintage 18K gold which is scarce but I have scored some designer pieces that I love. "Matisse" is one of the dealers that I go to for the vintage jewelry. A very nice gentleman and his son run that booth. There are also places that do repairs, so it's a fun place to spend a few hours.

I posted a reveiw for Bermuda titled way over priced now there trying to offer me something that only works for them and not me like a 25% discount if I spend twice what I spent or $450.00 gift card for di why would I except this when they screwed me as a new customer why get screwed again do your self a favor regardless of the bs they tell You and save yourself a lot of money and shop your local jeweler because they justify there price due to the cut and will only allow you to have it appraised at there appraisers because there getting a cut of the profit when a local jeweler will tell you what it is and will appraise at half the price.

If you are a lover of jewelry, this is a MUST see. If you like to window shop or if you are seriously in the market to purchase a diamond this is a definite must. Go educated and with a budget. The shop owners can be a little aggressive but they are nice and will answer questions even if you are not purchasing. We talked to a shop owner who had $250,000 earrings in his storefront. Very interesting and very beautiful jewelry.

Lots of diamonds and gems. You can get hustled if you want but just be firm and have a look on your own terms.

I toured through this well-known area this past weekend while in NY City for a wedding. There were a good number of diamond & jewelry stores in this "district," which really only stretches for one block on 47th street. I was surprised to find that the store I had come to visit was closed on that Saturday. When I asked another jeweler, he said "of course they are closed...it's Saturday and they are Jewish." Their website should say that, but it didn't. A few other stores were closed as well, while a couple others just didn't give me the feel of being a reputable dealer. I did find one store, however, which offered what I wanted, so I did make a purchase. But I would not be ready and willing to label this as the "end-all of jewelry districts," as it was not. Still, it is an interesting place to stroll down if in the area, just to take a look.

Totally overrated and over priced. Most of the Diamonds are sourced from South Africa, and it is at least 30 - 40 % cheaper to purchase the highest quality Gemstones through Internationally certified and known Diamond dealers in South Africa.

At the retail / street level mostly everything is overpriced. However, booking a tour of the Diamond District will give you access to the same wholesalers that deal with internationally certified quality gemstones at wholesale prices. It;s all about who you know in the NYC Diamond District.

Hi,
I have just read your post regarding a visit you made to New York Diamond District...
I am at the moment doing some research on where is best to buy.
I notice you mentioned South Africa and as it happens I am visiting there for 2weeks from 25th Feb 2019..
I was wondering if you knew of any good jewellers in Cape town you would recommend..
Regards
Kathy
