About
The Shelton Theater was founded in 1993 by Matt Shelton where plays, films, improvisation, musicals, standup comedy, solo performers, poetry slams, and fine art installations continue to inspire locals and tourists alike in the current downtown San Francisco location. The theater named after legendary actor/director/teacher Jean Shelton who came to San Francisco in 1961 from New York where she brought back an extensive knowledge of the art and craft of acting. Her husband, the late Robert Elross, was a leading arts figure having worked with Dave Brubeck, roomed with aspiring comic Woody Allen in the 50's in North Beach and directed and founded many local theaters here in the Bay Area.

amazing home for community theater and artists alike!!
Jun 2018 • Friends
The Shelton Theater is a true institution not only for the community but also for fellow artists. I cannot say enough about how kind, generous and supportive Matt Shelton has been to local actors, performers, filmmakers, writers, singers and many many more people that he welcomed with open arms and helped them without asking anything in return to support in belief of their visioni and their talent. The shelton theater is a beautiful institution showcasing huge variety of amazing work and broad scope of diverse talent from all over. The place is beautiful, the setting is cozy and the staff is splendid. Its a rare breed of a place and family that deserves every ounce of recognition and admiration for its amazing endless voice in the community. Support local theater, support the shelton theater!

Cancelled show without notifying us, so we wasted travel
Aug 2017 • Friends
Never in my life (of attending plays around the country) have I pre-paid for tickets and gone to a show (wasting the time and money to travel/park/etc) only to arrive 20 min before showtime and to be told the show was cancelled (last Sat, for “Judas…”). Go to Gold Start for a refund, I’m told. The producers/company could not have emailed people quickly with just a few words, so they wouldn’t waste the time???
I’ll never patronize the Shelton Theater again, ever. What unprofessionalism.

Streetcar Names Desire is Just Terrific
Oct 2016 • Couples
StreetCar is running only two more weeks. I'm sorry that I did not know about it before, I might have gone a second time.
This is a difficult play to produce in a small playhouse (as many as 10 actors on the stage at the same time), but Shelton has done a terrific job. There is so much energy, and emotion all over the stage -- it just brings this more than 50 year old play to life and makes the problems we see in it current as today.
The actors are really good, You can tell that they have been working together for some time, it's just like the proverbial well oiled machine -- it's a wonder to watch and hear.
The theater is on Sutter street it's just a block or so from the union square garage (the cheapest and safest parking the the neighborhood), the building actually has three theatres in it.
And best of all two very well run and well stocked bars.

MUST SEE Street Car Named Desire
Sep 2016 • Friends
We saw Street Car Named Desire on Fri 9/30. AMAZING! Small intimate theater. Nice bar area and the staff is warm and friendly. You are on the same level as the stage which gives you the feeling that you are part of the show. The actors were phenomenal. They put their heart and soul into their characters, it made the characters real. They were all great but I loved the last scene with Stella and Stanley. Briana Walsh played Stella and the feeling and emotion that went into her acting, especially the last scene made you feel like it was really happening and not just a show. The show is intense. They all deserved the standing ovation that they received. It is a must see if you are in town.

Great, inexpensive fun!
Aug 2016
I've been to the Shelton 3 times. Twice to see "Cheaper Than Therapy", and recently to see "Foodies, The Musical". The comedy show was great both times and the play was pretty funny and well done. The theater is in a great location, easy walk from the BART. Each theater is small, all the seats are good. Arrive early and have a drink in the bar downstairs, and if you haven't finished your drink, just take it with you into the theater. This is a great little place and I'll definitely be back!

"Foodies! The Musical", Food Was Never More Fun
Jul 2016 • Couples
My wife and I were unfamiliar with The Shelton Theater and a little apprehensive about the experience we were about to receive. It was a pleasant surprise. This "intimate" venue has about 130 seats, a full bar and a very tiny box office. The one act performance was a food spoof, and consisted of two couples capably singing and acting their way through about 22 very funny skits. We laughed all the way through and highly recommend it. We obtained half-price tickets at Union Square's TIX the day of the performance.

A small theatre that puts on high quality shows
Jun 2016
We saw "A Streetcar Named Desire", which was an intense full-on emotional performance. It was quite something, the actors must be exhausted afterwards.

A Small but A Nice Theather
Jul 2015
The place is relatively small but this is the reason why we can have more focus and close contact with the performer, the decoration at the bar is wonderful, however, if there is a toilet at the same floor would be better. Btw, the box office guy is so friendly and nice, we like this place very much :-)

Spend your money on real food, Not Foodies the Musical
Jul 2015 • Couples
Thought this might be great like Menopause the Musical, or Beach Blanket Babylon. Totally wrong. Some cute lines with repetitive melody. What a waste. Have a nice dinner with your money.
