The area
Address
Neighborhood: Marina District
Beautiful homes, beautiful people, and a beautiful backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge welcome visitors to the Marina. Originally the location for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915 (whose remnants can be seen at the Palace of Fine Arts), much of the land was filled and flattened to accommodate a world’s fair. That ample space has given way to a jogger’s paradise at the northern edge of the city. With the picturesque bay setting as its backdrop, it’s no surprise that the area has hosted numerous movie productions. Daytime activities focus on café culture and boutique shopping, while the evenings turn this neighborhood into a party-going hotspot.

The Fort Mason Centre is really good and has many parts to it including the meadow and the bay front marina. Really enjoyable place that the public can enjoy.

This big facility had been converted from military use a long time ago. It welcomes all sorts of special events, and I have been to some. Big meeting spaces available. This time we went to dinner at a special restaurant here with great views of the Golden Gate. There are a number of popular eating places here.

Wonderful place to enjoy the best of SF. Easy parking compared to rest of the city. Almost the best weather for all seasons and nice hiking trail. Lots of places to eat out.

We have been to Fort Mason Center numerous times This is a scenic area by the San Francisco Bay.

There are good restaurants there such as Greens. It has a nice view of the Golden Gate Bridge. There are various stores, etc. There is an event center.

It is known as the San Francisco Port of Embarkation. It used to be used by the US Army. There are numerous buildings including a hostel to stay at.

During a recent trip to San Francisco, I was staying only 6 blocks away from Fort Mason so I spent some time walking around exploring the area. There is a lot of history there, good informational displays and architecture. Some of the buildings now house art galleries, entertainment venues, coffee shops and restaurants. There is also a lovely outdoor park with picnic areas and art statues. There is even an International Hostel there, with Oh What A View from the hilltop location.

I especially enjoyed the Sunday Morning Farmers Market. In addition to a great selection of vendor booths offering produce, breads, meats, cheeses, and artisan goods such as honey and lotions, there was a wonderful selection of prepared food booths. We enjoyed fresh cooked Dumplings from one booth, and Crispy Duck Tacos from another, with a coffee from the nearby Equator Coffees and Teas which is a wonderful place for a hot or cold beverage.

The greatest perk here is that parking is free and there are restrooms. But the view of the area gives you a view of the golden gate, the marina, a walkway, stretching places and coffee kiosks. This place is always busy from the walkers, joggers and fitness enthusiasts. There is even an portable gym where they spread out the truck and laid out the floor. The actual Fort Mason Center is also a center for arts and culture and you can rent the spaces. This is a huge playground (the immediate area). We walked around and got some coffee.

We really walked to Fort Mason to visit the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Head Quarters and Visitors Center. However the Visitors Center was under repairs and we were only able to collect a few maps and other information.

Of note - The GGNRA H.Q. does have the entire collection of cancellation stamps for every site within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The only place that I am aware of that has the entire collection.

Although disappointed in the visitors center we were able to enjoy some fantastic views of the bay and the golden gate bridge. Nice area where you could spend a lot of time walking or biking.

We went to Fort Mason for a yearly craft fair. It is a beautiful area near the bay and the walk to the Marina from the Fisherman's Wharf area is beautiful as well. Fort Mason consists of several buildings. A couple of buildings appear to have various events, for example the craft fair that I attended. Other buildings have a few restaurants, a few shops and one a little museum and a book store. If you walk out behind the building closest to the water, you get great views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. There is also a park nearby.
