During my law school days, I lived in the outer Sunset. Nowadays, I stay out at the Seal Rock Inn when I visit as I love the area.
It's an architectural feast for the eyes, and I love wandering around. Plenty of spots to eat and shop. The area is coming back nicely after the pandemic, the 38 and 1 buses are again full of riders off to school, going to work, and running errands.
Best of all, the foghorns can be heard. For me, they're like a SF lullaby (though others might not share my views).

We drove through here on the way to and from a museum and remarked to each other that is is not all that pretty. Lots of people live here. Lots of ethnic restaurants. Lots of fog. Lots of boring architecture.

On my Hop On Hop Off tour, part of the tour goes through the Richmond District of San Francisco. It is on the west side of the city.
Richmond District is located amongst the parks of San Francisco. It is bordered by Golden Gate Park on the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and Lincoln Park, Land's End, Mountain Lake Park and the Presidio of San Francisco to the north.
It is a residential area of San Francisco with cafes, shops, etc.

Lots and lots of people live here so it is a neighborhood full of neighborhood institutions. Lots of ethnic restaurants. Some blocks are very upscale.

I felt that this neighborhood was much more modest than some of the others in the city. I saw lots of apartment/condo buildings and they were less opulent. It was a nice break from the touristy parts of the city.

We were in the Richmond District of SF for lunch and walked to Ocean Beach afterward. Beautiful walk from beach up into Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. Highly recommend!

Some truly unique and wonderfully designed houses found within the Richmond District. No block is the same and the area is so much calmer and more peaceful than that of busy, loud Downtown San Francisco. Thoroughly enjoyed lunch at Angelina’s Deli-Café and caught a very direct Muni bus from the Holy Virgin Cathedral all the way back to Union Square in about twenty minutes. Great neighbourhood with lots of restaurants and diverse shops.

For those without a car you can get to the other Chinatown by taking the N Judah line from market street and getting off at the 19th street stop then walking down to Irving street. This location is the other Chinatown which offers lots of Chinese restaurants and shopping. There are also other interesting stops around 9th plenty of stores more attune to local San franciscan

I have been staying here for a few nights so far, it's a nice and handy suburb. It is mostly a pretty quiet area, lots of food choices and colourful little houses. There are a few bus stops that go to all the main touristy areas, but I wouldn't recommend using the buses unless you like being squeezed to death! Despite buses leaving every 8 minutes people still want to cram on and there is no room to move. Even though the couple of homeless people that stand around are harmless, always tuck away your purse, I made the mistake of just taking my purse and not my bag as I was only going for a quick walk from my apartment to get dinner, it attracted a lot of attention! But it is pretty safe here, I have seen a lot of families walking about.
