The area
Neighborhood: Mission District
From burritos to bicyclists, the Mission is the foundation for all things hip in the city. Cultural attractions, an independent arts community, sumptuous street murals and a high density of bars and cafes make this neighborhood a magnet for young people. While terrific inexpensive food is abundant, its top-of-the-line restaurants now compete with the city’s best for fashionable diners. Indulge as the locals do by heading to Mission Dolores Park, buy some ice cream, and savor one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country.

Cool collection of restaurants and funky shops. Lots of live music on the sidewalks on weekends. Food from all corners of the world at great prices. Not for everyone, similar to SOHO in NYC, South street in Philadelphia or 6th Street in Austin. Wall murals, graffiti, music, second hand shops, weed smoking, etc. Funky, fine and harmless hippie vibe.

We often read that this neighborhood can be quite dangerous. As a result we limited our visit to the most touristic points, without going too far. That said we never felt in danger and really enjoyed the neighborhood, where it feels like we were screened in South America!

Loved the markets, the ambiance and the food! The murals and little shops along Valencia ave. There are shops filled with everything you can imagine - from bracelets to incredible chocolates. Mexican, Venezuelan, to Colombian…

The place to head to is Valencia Street where you will find some very good restaurants and markets as well as lots of coffee. Very hip and there is some outdoor seating. And it is easy to walk over to Mission to board the underground Muni and BART.

Walked around the Mission District today for about an hour and a half based on some reviews I read about the great art and authentic Mexican food. Started at the Taqueria El Farolito and ordered the carne asada burritos. The food was very good but shady characters in the immediate area and the smell of urine on the way in to the restaurant really made the experience not worth it for us. We then headed to Valencia street and walked into some unique shops before arriving at the Clarion Alley murals. The murals were cool but there wasn’t much else worth seeing in the area. We then walked up to Mission Dolores Church. It’s architecture was beautiful but unfortunately it was closed and we couldn’t go in. I would not recommend walking around this neighborhood unless burritos and graffiti art are your passion. Disappointing experience overall.

Not much has changed here, except that it has gotten worse. Even more homeless people, streets of tents, lots of dirt, and the stench, drug addicts as far as the eye can see. If I hadn't been so enamored with the pictures, I wouldn't have gone through there, but the pictures are world class and worth seeing alone.

This is where all the groovy people go now for the coffee shops and cool restaurants, plus the funky bars and the ambience. But it has history as the Latino neighborhood and one should come here to explore what is left, especially the murals. And then go drink some coffee.

Went to see the alley with my sister from Delaware and let me just say how beautiful the murals are. I especially liked the powerful women empowerment mural. We were also the first ones to see a man painting Donald Trump. That one should be interesting once it’s completed. The area looks sketchy but overall it was a great sight to see!!! I plan on doing some research in regards to the murals and learn the history as well. Come with an OPEN mind ❤️

We had a fun return trip to the Mission District of San Francisco.

We had a delightful lunch on the patio at Foreign Cinema, which is a really fun restaurant

We took a walk and went to several stores and also looked at the amazing murals.

We went to the mission and also to Delores Park.

Post Covid much more run down. Homeless everywhere. Sad lack of city services for vulnerable population. Excellent taquerias, but not what it once was. Some safety issues. Worst subway stop ever.
