The area
Neighborhood: Russian Hill
Russian Hill has evolved into a chic residential neighborhood with outstanding views from every corner. Combined with several great cafes, restaurants, antique shops and boutiques, it’s easy to see why any visitor would gladly leave their heart in San Francisco. Cars line up day after day to drive down Lombard Street, the “crookedest” street in the world, and make the slow creep downhill past charming period homes. Polk Street is the main drag in this neighborhood, where you will find trendy bars, cafes and shops populated with locals, but for one of the most charming rides in the city, grab a cable car heading up and down Hyde Street.

I wandered through this neighborhood on a breezy early spring afternoon. Although I'd lived in SF during grad school, I'd never really ventured up here before. It's actually accessible by the excellent public transportation SF is known for.

It was an architectural geek's delight (I'm one of those). The area is also home to the city's other functional octagonal home, which is privately owned but still visible. From the small pocket park, you can see clear across to the UC Berkeley clock tower, as well as view the mysterious Pasquale's Tower down in North Beach.

It's a bit of a walk, but if you're up for an adventure, highly recommended.

San Francisco has many unknown public stairway walks with incomparable unique views. A series of these can be found via a walk on the east side of Russian Hill, in the area around Macondray Lane, aka Barbary Lane, from Maupin's Tales of the City-- and extending two blocks south To Russian Hill Place between Jones and Taylor. Sunday morning an excellent time to visit and parking available on streets then. Excellent resource is book available on smart phone or paperback, "Stairway Walks in San Francisco."

I stayed just adjacent to Russian Hill. My favorite place in this area was the Russian Hill Bookstore. Found so many unique treasures, not just books. Wonderful card and journal selection, as well as a great children's area. And, ended up working our way down to Ghirardelli Square and the Aquatic Park completely on accident. The views are quite amazing!!

A steep climb but more than worth burning off some of that breakfast to feast upon the views over the bay to Alcatraz and Golden Gate Bridge. Lombard street is up this neck of the woods but so overrated it’s not true

My sons have lived in the Russian Hill neighborhood for several years and neither one of them realized that Russian Hill actually has a summit with a lovely tiny park at its crest. It is off the beaten track even though its only a few blocks away from Lombard Street. From Lombard just walk away from the bay, down Hyde or Leavenworth to Vallejo, make a left and walk uphill until you reach the park. The park is named after Russian sailors who were buried there in the 1840's. Continue down the stairs to Ina Coolbrith Park (another hidden gem) which has good views of downtown and nice garden plantings. Or, while you are still at the top of Russian Hill, just back track a few feet and cut down Florence Street (there are stairs at the end) to the crest of Broadway. This has to be the steepest street in San Francisco, with the cars parked perpendicular to the sidewalk. I swear if you touched one they would all tumble over like dominoes. Continue down Broadway to Chinatown.

Russian Hill is one of the original seven hills of the city. Its bordered by the areas of Cow Hollow and Marina District. The crookedest street runs this part. At the bottom of the hill is Ghirardelli Square.

The area goes back to the Gold Rush era when a small Russian cemetery was discovered. Its an area worth going for its views of the city and the crooked street.

This is definitely a cool place to go see. I've never seen a road anything like it. It also offers great views of the city. While we walked there the first time, we did return with the car to take a drive down. This is an attraction you can quickly stop by on your way to something else. Because it is a busy area, if you're planning on stopping, I would recommend walking there to avoid the traffic and having to park. If you want to bring a car to drive down but also take some pictures, I would park a block or two away so you can make a quick escape when you're done.

We walked from our hotel fairly early in the morning, but as we were there, the area quickly became extremely busy with tourists all trying to drive down and take pictures. It was unreal! I feel very sorry for the people who live there because this apparently goes on all day everyday. So if you want to avoid the crowds, go early, and then get on with the rest of your day.

It is worth stopping by though because it truly is a cool site and it's free!

Right after Nob Hill. Russian Hill has steep incline but a great view of the city awaits for you at the top
