Refuge has been "mothballed" for lack of funding. Kiawe and cattails have completely taken over the former wetlands. Much of the water dried up when development above on the hillside tapped into the water table. There is no longer any habitat for the native waterbirds and migratory birds it was set aside to protect.

Essentially a badly neglected fenced in marshy area overgrown with bulrush. No viewing platform, no marked parking area, and surrounded by private property. Visitors' amenities completely non-existence. The only wildlife you'll probably see are feral cats, and ugly ones at that!

We headed out in our 4 wheel drive jeep at about 9:30am and took our time, stopped many times along the way for pictures. What a beautiful, other side of Hawaii. The forests and vistas are breath-taking. If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, you really need to take this drive. It was a bit muddy on the last part and one lane only for quite a bit but oh so worth it.

Rent a four wheel drive jeep and drive up into the mountains and on top there is a lookout and bathroom facilities.

Stopped by the office to get info about rare wild flowers up in the bog. It was pouring so they said it would be really muddy and to bring a winch on the jeep!
