My husband and I spent 6 days on Wikiki Beach and had just traveled to Maui via air.
Everything was so crowded and noisy....until we reached Turnbull.
We saw it as we passed by and decided to stop.Upon exiting our car, we could hear the birds and nature sounds. No busses, no noisy tourists, just quiet.
We went wondering around the beautiful yard and walked inside the studio. We were met with husband and wife artists who could not have been more gracious and welcoming. We looked around, chatting, asking questions about the art. There was not pressure to buy. As Mary Poppins says : "A thing of beauty is a joy forever". Lots and lots of beautiful things to look at and explore. They told us the road was out on the way to Kappalua during the week, so we turned around and went the highway. It was a weekend on our way back out, and boy, they aint kidding about taking your life in your hands. Very cool ride, but not worth dying for.
Make this place a stop for some relaxing browsing.

I stopped in to have a look while driving the north coast--I originally just wanted to see the sculpture garden but I stopped in at the gallery because I thought there might be something worth buying as a gift. The gallery attendant asked me if I was wandering or shopping, and I answered "wandering" and he went on to say he hoped there would be real customers and "not just wanderers". I replied that I was a student and on a budget so while I'd like to buy lots of things I had to be careful, to which he replied "you're here and you have a pulse. You can buy something." He went on to say "You're the reason I'm here. If it weren't for you I'd still be in bed right now. If you weren't here I'd get to sleep in." I don't know if he just had a super dry sense of humour or was just incredibly aggressive, but I hightailed it out of there. I might have splurged on something, but this guy scared me off. Could leave fast enough. A note to the attendant: this is the best way to lose a sale--there was lovely stuff in there, but your customers are under no obligation to buy just cause they walk through the door.

Here is what we read about Turnbull, which is why we made the decision to make this drive, and it is quite a drive!

"Monumental wood, stone and bronze sculptures by artists Steve and Christine Turnbull. The working studio and gallery also feature original paintings, ceramics, glass, jewelry, and crafts by local artists. Twenty-plus years ago, master sculptor escaped to this rugged part of the island."

Along the drive, you switchback along the road and see some amazing greenery! (I don't know that I could have been the driver along this route, but my husband excels at switchbacking!) One bush literally "cascaded" down the side of the mountain, like a waterfall.

We enjoyed looking at all the art, jewelry, etc. and talked a bit with Yohann (sp.) who came to Maui 11 years ago to spend time surfing and never left! He said he works one day a week to help them out. Also, Steve took time to show us his classic red Fiat.

Forget about all the souvenir shops up and down the streets of the each major resort area in Maui. If you truly want to take home a piece of Hawaii, travel to Turnbull. It is so worth the drive.

this is a wonderful whimsical gallery of related artists.

We first visited Peter more than 15 years ago, and his mastery of 'found' wood was enthralling. We were blown away by his sculpture garden then, and have watched his work & the second generation behind him

We stopped here on our North end trip. We were delighted by the art and many different sculptures that Turnbull offered.

This is definitely unique from the dozens of shops you find in each town center shops

Well worth the stop
