Both Waiola (which means "Water of Life") Church and the Waiola (or Waine'e) Graveyard next to it figure heavily into Maui's history. Many important figures from the early days of Hawaiian colonization are buried here, the famous next to the unknown, and perhaps more importantly, the Hawaiian next to the Western.

Let me start out by saying that I did not attend a church service here. I wanted to see the grounds and the cemetery and we visited when the church was not open. You definitely get the feeling of respect when walking through the cemetery....More

We were here for Psalm Sunday services and were blown away. We received an extravagant welcome, and the service itself included several native-language hymns, and some wonderful and prayerful sharing of stories and concerns. This is a special place.

I have had a long-time association with UCC churches and their "welcoming and affirming" policy to people from all walks of life. This small, historically Hawaiian church has that and more in the way of welcome ~ Hawaiian style. The people are friendly, the service...More

Take the Lahaina historical tour given by westin ocean resort villas for a full explanation of church & its grounds' history. It's even recognized as sovereign land

The aloha was very evident when I visited this church. I enjoyed hearing hymns sung in Hawaiian accompanied by ukuleles, and seeing the graves of some of the first Hawaiians buried in the Christian manner.

Although Waiola Church and the adjoining Waine'e Cemetery may seem sleepy and (as another reviewer mentioned) not very active, it is actually a wonderful congregational church with immense historical value. Since its inception in 1823, this place has had and continues to have great significance....More

First let me say I'm saddened by a few reviews that look at Waiola church as a tourist attraction. The cemetery is sacred ground and the church is where people go for strength, community, guidance and love. I came here referred by a lovely young...More

What neat graves! I thought I would find a lot of older or more interesting graves, but the setting itself was cool.

Great graveyard with Hawaiian royalty buried here. Not a very active church but once a year they do a low key luau with excellent entertainment.
