We very much enjoyed strolling through this national wildlife refuge. While the ponds closer to the visitor center were interesting there is also a lovely boardwalk you can stroll along in the section of the refuge along the beach. It was here at an outdoor exhibit where we learned about the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. The volunteer at the refuge visitor center was very knowledgeable and helpful.

Beach was pretty narrow but pretty, some rocks along the coast so wear appropriate footwear. Boardwalk was nicely maintained. Probably due to time of year there was not many birds in the estuary area, but we saw a few white (herons?) along the road.

Short walk on a boardwalk through the refuge. Interesting flora and water creatures to see. Adjacent to a beach to walk on.

I went with my adult daughter with a specific intent to check out some cool birds. We drove down the path and even saw some colorful birds at the entry and exit points, and then saw some great birds at the ponds. A quick stop if you are looking to see some neat birds.

My wife and I recently walked the trails around and through Kealia Pond and enjoyed seeing the coots and stilts. It was very quiet when we were there - no more than a handful of other people were at the pond. It was an interesting change of pace from the usual attractions on Maui.

To get away from the crowds in Maui and do something different, go to the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge to spend a quiet morning with the unique Hawaiian birds. The Visitor Info Center is along Mokulele Highway near Kihei and the trails around the ponds starts here. The Kealia Coastal Boardwalk is accessed along the Maalaea Highway on the other side. Here there are sea turtles, Hawaiian coots, Hawaiian Stilts , Black-crowned Night Herons and other birds and waterfowl. Best to do in the cooler hours of the morning. Great for kids and bird lovers.

Nature walk-something to do but…..went by myself one morning before kids were up. It was fine. Educational, but when I did it, not much to see in terms of nature. If you’re in Maui for less then a week I wouldn’t make this a destination.

Nice flat walking trails. Birds easy to see from boardwalk trails. Liked seeing the Hawaiin Coots and others. Very windy in that area.

We went here one morning for a nice walk. It is a nice board walk with lots of birds/ducks around. Tons of dragon flies at teh end of it too. So pretty and tranquil. Nice way to spend an hour

First, we visited the Kanuimanu Ponds. The visitor center was closed, so we started walking to the ponds only to realize you can drive there. We saw many birds, mostly ‘Auku‘u (Black-crowned night heron) and Ae‘o (Hawaiian stilt). Be prepared to walk through lots of mud and backtrack to avoid water crossings. Then, we drove to the coastal boardwalk. We saw more ‘Auku‘u on the way to the beach. Both of these locations are quick and free stops for some wildlife-viewing and exercise. The boardwalk is wheelchair-accessible, but the ponds are not.
