About
Princeville Botanical Gardens is a family owned and operated garden paradise located in the Princeville area on the magnificent north shore of Kauai. Established by The Robertson Family with the help of their close gardening friend Michael in 2001, this 9-acre property has been transformed into a breathtaking garden with dramatic landscaping in two steep valleys. The tour includes homegrown honey and fruit samples, as well as a chocolate tasting that teaches you the history of chocolate making. You'll have fun learning about the uses and folklore of native Hawaiian plants and exotic species from around the world. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Visitors can experience the garden on pre-scheduled tours on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Tours are not recommended for children under 6 years. Moderate mobility is needed to go on our nature walk. Please be sure to call us before visiting. Thank you!

We lucked out with an absolutely beautiful day with abundant sunshine and no rain. Troy was our guide and he was phenomenal, full of information about the flowers, trees and fauna, with a few entertaining stories along the way. Overall, he was extremely respectful and professional throughout the tour. The chocolate tasting was a great addition as it was interesting to hear various perspectives on each piece of chocolate that we tasted, as well as how chocolate is actually made. Above all, I have tons of beautiful pictures on my phone that I can't wait to share with friends that I know are flower lovers and have probably never seem some of the species I took today. Well with every penny!

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of these gardens. I thought the chocolate tasting might be a bit weird, but it was quite enjoyable. The only drawback is that it is quite steep in parts. Luckily, they have handrails on the steepest parts. The guides were excellent.

When we arrived it was pouring down rain. They had umbrellas to borrow and ponchos for sale (cheap! $2!). The staff was very knowledgeable and we got to try lots of different fruit treats in addition to the chocolate. Be sure to wear your bug repellent! They had some to use there but I still got bit.

Mahalo Nichole! We get around 80" of rain per year and the garden has a special charm when it's glistening from the rain drops! We are elated that you enjoyed the garden tour! Aloha!

The Gardens were beautiful and our guide Sheri was the best. Her knowledge and stories she told were interesting and fun to hear. We loved the tasting stops too. There was a lot of walking but it was moderate terrain. It was a great tour and would recommend this tour when visiiting Kauai.

This was our second time joining the Princeville Botanical Gardens tour. We have been researching a children's book for the last couple years, and made it a goal to visit all the botanical gardens on Kauaʻi. We were so pleasantly surprised by the tour - our guides were super knowledgable and informative, the chocolate was delicious. We enjoyed it so much, we brought family this time and joined again. Just as wonderful as last time! Especially a fun tour for gardeners/plant-lovers.

The Botanical garden was absolutely stunning. I love that the master Gardener wanted adorers to appreciate the garden with their heart instead of their head because you can freely tap into a place of adoration for this earth when visiting this beautiful place. Our tour guide was very knowledge and went at a pace everyone could enjoy the sights. We were able to bring our six month old and two year old (who loves plants/flowers/water) and he was very entertained. One recommendation would have been to pay a small fee for the two year old so he could have tasted the chocolates. They gave us Plenty to share but he is in a "me only, Dada only, momma only" phase and we would have appreciated knowing in advance he would not be 'paeticiparing' in that part of the tour.

Aloha! Your share is exactly what Michael, our master gardener, was hoping for all visitors to experience! It lights us all up. Thanks for the recommendation regarding your two year old...we can all appreciate the truth in the "me only" phase!

This is a wonderful guided hike through some of the most beautiful and exotic plant life on Kauai. Our guide Lisa displayed an encyclopedic knowledge of the current and historic significance of the island’s vegetation which was imparted with an infectious enthusiasm that could only come from someone who genuinely loves what they do. It is well worth the price of admission and we would all recommend it 10/10. Oh, and they give you chocolate to sample as well :)

Can I visit the garden and not go on tour as I use a rollator.
Written August 22, 2022
it is not self guided. Unfortunately, i dont think a rollator is a good option as thier are a lot of steep paths and walks. You may want to contact them and see what they can do to assist. I would think that the first part of the tour, including the chocolate tasting you could do. It is a beautiful place.

Are there restrooms easily accessible during the tour?
Written October 21, 2019

Would we be able to take an infant on this tour? We plan to bring a backpack baby carrier. I noticed it is not recommended for children under 5 but I wonder if an infant would be okay. Thanks!
Written July 3, 2019
Probably not. It's really hot, and even if you can stand in the shade your body heat with infant carrier would be hard. Also, lots of mosquitos. They ask that you use nothing with deet in it.
We all got bit. Used their bug spray but still. Full coverage clothing is the best idea.

My wife has rheumatoid arthritis and can walk medium, not long distances. How long or strenuous is this tour? Are there shortcuts or places to rest?
Written June 13, 2019
Randall, The length of the three hour guided tour is about 1.5 miles. There are flat lands, inclines and declines along the tour. The 1st hour of the walk is progressing through the gardens, 2nd hour is sitting in chairs tasting chocolate, and the 3rd hour is walking through the gardens. There are chairs along the walk that you can sit and rest. The pace of the walk is slow so that helps. Donna was our guide and she told us in the beginning of the walk that if someone needed help getting back to "base camp" a staff member will come in a golf cart and pick you up. It is a beautiful garden and I hope that you and your wife have the chance to visit. Remember, if it gets too hard, they will come and get you.

We'll be taking a red eye flight out and are looking for activities to do after checking out of our hotel in the morning. Is the tour leisurely enough and on well groomed paths that we will not get dirty or too hot since we won't be able to shower before our flight?
Written November 23, 2018
We visited the garden while we were killing time before a red-eye and found it a delightful and perfect activity. Very casual and relaxed. Not hot in July when we went. Not muddy either.

We are booked to travel to Princeville on May 5. With the current weather situation and flooding in Hanalei, I’m concerned about accessibility to this area. Can anyone tell me how the Princeville area in general is doing after the severe flooding?
Written April 19, 2018
Aloha!
So sorry for the delay in answering. We missed TripAdvisor's alert for this question. We are open and operating on our normal schedule, though a part of the gardens are now off limits as we do trail repair. The majority of the island remains accessible, apart from the highway beyond Hanalei. That area will only be open to local residents for some time.

We are in Princeville for the week and would like to book a tour for two. How do we do this and are there spaces from 2/26 to 5/1?
Written April 26, 2017
Just call, they are very helpful and accommodating.
Written April 26, 2017
As of May 2018, the cost is $69 per adult and $22 for children 7-16. Kids 6 and under are free, though we caution the slow paced educational nature of the tour may be inappropriate for young children.
Be sure to book in advance. Our traffic has increased dramatically since last year.

Are your garden paths accessible by manual wheelchair?
Written May 30, 2016
I'm very sorry for the delayed response, but all these helpful people who came before are correct. The gardens are not suitable for such a wheelchair, but please call us directly to see what other options we might have.
