About
NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Mahalo for the feedback. Sounds like you visited during one of our Thursday Aloha Markets--art, crafts, food, farm! A great place to start and end your visit to NTBG! The visitor center garden is a teaser garden. The true garden treasures await you on one of our visits to McBryde Garden or Allerton Garden! Mahalo Again!

A Walk Without Names of Trees and Plants
May 2021
We went on the $20/person McBryde Garden "walk" that took about an hour total to walk. We were disappointed that the trees and plants were not labeled. Being a ""Botanical Garden" we were looking forward to learning the names of what we were looking at and reading about in the paper guide. I found some wires around a few big trees that had a label attached with small print of where the plant was from (not very helpful), but I had to circle the tree to find it, and try not trip over the roots and branches. It was a pretty garden Walk. A Walk - That's all! Be Warned:
There were 5 of us who waited 1 3/4 hour at the (closed) snack shop area for the bus to come pick us up Be sure to stand at the road where you were left off, because no one will stop and call out, or even get out of the bus to look for you! We had no cell coverage, so we could do nothing but wait. and Wait! Our 10:30 tour got us back shortly before 2pm! Their website says "2 hours no more no less." Be sure to stand ON the road and maybe that will be true.

Aloha Pink98-- Your feedback is appreciated and duly noted. We made a mistake on the day of your visit and have taken steps to prevent it from happening again. Also sorry that McBryde Garden didn't meet your expectations. We have over 20,000 of those small tags on individual smaller plants and trees in the garden. We know that those are of minimal interpretive value. Each year we add a new batch of the "more traditional" signs marking our plants. There are actually already several hundred in the garden. There will always be a need for more.

Best of Both Worlds, the McBride and Allerton Gardebs
May 2021
If you are interested in plants, flowers, and trees, this is the tour for you. I did the Best of Both Worlds tour which included the Native plants in the McBride Garden and the wonderful and artistic landscaping in the Allerton Garden. It was interesting to learn about the Native Hawaiian plants and which ones were brought over in canoes. The Allerton Garden is spectacular with mature trees and lots of tropical gardens. If you are interested in botany, I highly recommend this trip.

Best of Both Worlds tour
May 2021 • Couples
We took the best of both worlds tour which showed us parts of Allerton and McBryde Gardens. Our guide, Ron, made it fun as well as imparting lots of educational facts. The bus snd short walks made this a great way to see some marvelous botany. It whet the appetite to return to see Allerton Gardens.

Superb visit seeing Kauai Tropical plants
May 2021 • Couples
We’ve been coming to Kauai for years and this year decided to visit the gardens. The tour was nothing short of superb - partly because of the amazing tropical plants snd partly because of the outstanding tour guide Sam. The 2 1/2 hr tour utilizes a bus and stops at many unique areas to walk around and look at the plants more closely. The ride between is equally interesting due to the beautiful scenery and narration from the guide.

A must do Kaua'i experience!
Apr 2021
My wife and I went on the 2 1/2 hour tour with Sam our guide April 15th. This was our 2nd time visiting the gardens and were excited to have the opportunity to go deeper into the McBride side of the garden. Sam is a native to Hawaii who is one of nine kids. He and his brothers helped his dad build a lot of the structures that are found in the garden. He speaks fluent Hawaiian and gave us all a lot of good information about how the various plants are used by the natives for various ailments. He even sang a beautiful Hawaiian song back by the waterfall. So worth the price of admission. Plus it is so good to know that the National Botanical Garden is helping to save the native species and keep Kaua'i's natural treasures alive.

Lovely Morning With the Local Flora (and Henrietta)
Nov 2020
Our guide was a lovely lady who had been both a volunteer and an employee of Allerton Garden (I'm ashamed to say I can't remember her name, although I remember Henrietta the duck -- how pathetic am I?). Our guide was very knowledgeable about all the plants and answered everyone's questions with patience and as much information as we wished, as well as sharing stories about the history of the construction of various garden 'rooms' and even mentioning TV shows and films shot in the gardens. She was charming and brought the history of the gardens alive for us, as well as explaining the scientific benefits (and hazards) of the plants. It was delightful to learn about plants we'd admired as landscaping around Kauai (or growing wild along the road). A delightful morning (bring your insect repellent -- the garden is beautifully maintained, but the bugs like it too!).

Amazing experience
Nov 2020 • Couples
I did the twilight tour, though I did the sunset tour previously and rated that one separately. It was great.

The twilight tour starts as the sun is setting then you hike for about 2 hrs. Its up and down lots of uneven steps, level and unlevel ground, and is moderate active level. I have bad hips and managed it while pacing myself. If you can walk for 2 hrs this tour is definitely doable. Its was beautiful to see the the area after dark. It was very different from the sunset tour even though it's the same gardens. We got to see 2 different areas of it. There are so many water falls. I highly suggest doing both if you're here for a while.

The tour guides are all so knowledgeable and nice. I suggest sunblock for the sunset tour and bug spray for the twilight. Bring water, but not too much theres no bathrooms along the way, lol.
