- Dawn POceanside, California24 contributionsOne of the Best AttractionsI've been enjoying rides at CJM for years and quite frankly will not visit Kauai without going for a beach ride. I love the horses and love the people that work at CJM. Janine - you Rock!Visited September 2023Written October 5, 2023
- Jeanne R2 contributionsMoney well spent!!!CJM Country Stables is an incredible and professional outfit. The staff of cowboys & cowgirls that maintain the horses, correctly match the animal with the rider’s experience/or lack of experience. The animals are well taken cared for and beautiful. The ride through the brush, mountains and through the beach is breathtaking. Our guide Greg, was extremely knowledgeable of the history of Kauai, the wild animals that live on the island, and current every day economy on the island. As past owners of horses and caring for them on our property it was a pleasure watching Greg work with the riders and animals. Greg loves what he does and there is no doubt he is a Horse Whisperer. We HIGHLY recommend CJM Country Stables. John & JeanVisited October 2023Written October 9, 2023
- elindanavRoseville, California1 contributionBest Trail Ride Yet!We found this Stable in Kauai while doing our research on things to do on the island. I ride horses in competition back home so I always make sure to do at least one trail ride while on vacation. This place is located near the beach and had so many great views. Our guide Robert was cool to ride with. He shared with us all the cool movies that were done in certain spots of our ride. I highly recommend this stable for a beautiful and breathtaking trail ride. Oh and did I mention how much fun I had riding Honey Boo!Visited October 2023Written October 12, 2023
- martaLa Jolla, California29 contributionsDon't miss this experience when visiting KauaiI've enjoyed riding at CJM Stables when vacationing in Kauai for over 30 years. They offer a professional and safe 2 hour trail ride. With glorious views, healthy, well-treated horses, and wonderful guides , it is my most favorite activity on the island. Greg was an excellent guide who loves his profession. Knowledgeable about island history, plants, animals - he's a walking encyclopedia at the stables. Jimmy ( the owner) whom I met in 1989, is always enjoyable and enthusiastic to greet riders of all abilities. Everyone is matched with a horse according to their personal experiences riding. Young (8 and up) or seniors can ride with no concerns.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 13, 2023
- MichiC2308Phoenix, Arizona16 contributionsBeautiful sceneryThe horses were lovely, and the views were just breathtaking. The only negative was that our family was quite put off by the older gentlemen checking us in. Maybe he thought he was being funny with his sarcasm but given the amount of money we were spending; we did not feel welcome. He was quite condescending in his demeanor, and we will not be returning to this establishment.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 14, 2023
- bubbazidySan Diego, California1 contributionAwesome horseback ride2 hour ride with an awesome guide, Russel, whom pointed out where movie sets took place on the island & other points of interest with history on our trail. My boyfriend and I enjoyed the ride along the beach, through some water, mountainsides, even came across a wild pig. Horses look well taken care of & behaved great. ❤️Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 17, 2023
- kelseysteinbachMinneapolis, Minnesota1 contributionbest ride ever!!this ride was an absolute highlight of our trip. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking with the coast on one side and the mountains on the other—it was hard to choose where to look!! Our guide, Greg, was a delight and very knowledgeable about the island, history, and the ranch itself! Overall such a positive and fun experience. The horses were very well trained and fun to ride, no worries of safety ever crossing our minds. They take your experience or lack thereof into consideration and set you up with a horse that fits your needs. Beautiful ride and could not recommend it enough!!Visited October 2023Written October 20, 2023
- lynn w1 contributionRecommended 100%This was one of my favorite things to do on Kauai!! The staff was great and knowledgeable about the horses and the history of Kauai. Greg was our guide and is very attentive to each individual's experience with horses. He told stories and included everyone in the group. The views were breathtaking and I have so many beautiful pictures and memories of this trip. My horses name was Red, and he was so gentle and responded to the very thought of my movements. Hope I get to go again someday!!Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 25, 2023
- Ian SLagunitas, California1 contributionThumbs up for all!!! THIS WAS A GREAT ADVENTUREWe were a party of four, which included my wife and eight year old daughter, who were first time riders, a very good friend and myself. All of us were comfortably saddled on very Gentle, healthy, happy and especially on this ride, loved horses, couldn't resist letting a little nibble of grass happen now and then, but absolutely no backbiting here. The horses were very well trained and easy to handle by all of us. The staff is wonderful and helpful, Greg, our guide, was terrific letting us know much Kauai history along the way I had not known. The ride had nice variation of terrain easy to manage by even beginners, the spectacular scenery was breathtaking throughout. This was a special experience, a lifetime lasting memory. We will definitely return to ride again in the near future. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! CJM from The Stone FamilyVisited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 3, 2023

Marty and her family run a beautiful, authentic, high quality experience that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in seeing unspoiled nature and coastline and learning about the history of the area by horseback. We were traveling with 4 kids between ages 13-17 of varied riding experiences/interest levels, and we had a fantastic time. Marty’s professionalism, humor and insight (as well as her dog!) made for a comfortable and fun time for all. We will definitely return on our next trip!

I booked a spot online thinking I could book another one for my spouse. Alas, that was the last spot. So pay attention to the select the exact number available to meet your needs at one time. I called CJM on the phone who allowed the extra rider for the trip this time. Very helpful. The ride itself was outstanding. Very compliant horses, great guide who took 2 group photos for families then Airdropped them. Scenery was excellent with ocean and mountain views.

CJM is a top notch stable run by professional horsemen who care for the animals and take you on a beautiful loop ride at a leisurely pace. For beginners, the pre-ride video and introduction is very helpful and advanced riders will not be bored with trail dead horses. Their horses are well trained and responsive and Mardy, our guide, was a wonderful source of island information being a born and bred Kauaian.

This reviews is long overdue. I went to Kauai with my husband for our honeymoon. I absolutely love animals and could not possibly have a better experience…besides just stay there the whole day. Lol. The staff is very friendly & helpful with riders of all-to no experience. I’ve only gone horse back riding once before 10 year prior also in Kauai at a different stable. But CJM was more than amazing. We did the group ride along the beach. Our guide was so awesome! He really took his time to teach us about the history and the land we were riding through. He really helped me understand how to properly ride & control the speed & direction of the horse. Since I had little experience I rode Willy Nelson. He was just lovely. I honestly can go on all day about the beautiful magical experience I felt at CJM stables. If you are a animal lover or have any interest in going on a horseback ride I highly recommend CJM stables. I plan to go back any & every time I go yo Kauai!

The place is located in a beautiful spot. The ride is extremely expensive per person and the horses don’t seem to be trained too well. I had issues with both horses I was on (one immediately started kicking and biting at the other horses and one wouldn’t listen and kept walking off the trail) and didn’t get to finish the ride but still paid for it. My husband had a decent ride because he has experience with horses. There was only 1 person leading the trail and no one in the back. So when something would happen the leader wouldn’t be aware or available to help immediately. I think this is great for those who have experience but I do not recommend to those who haven’t been on a horse before.

I took my stepson and my 8 year old daughter, and we all loved it. We saw some beaches on Kauai that we never saw before. Another group was paired off with us, with a beginning rider. Our guide, Russell, was friendly, professional and extremely knowledgeable. He was very attentive and made sure that all 6 riders were comfortable throughout the ride. Ask for him if you can - he is an excellent guide!
The horses were beautiful, calm and well taken care of. The scenery was simply breathtaking.
I highly recommend this experience. Bring a water bottle and a small camera. Don’t forget to tip your guides. 😉

My husband and I decided to try the horseback riding tour. They were initially booked up but my husband asked to be placed on a cancellation list and we were called back for an opening. Our guide was Jimmy and he was informative, fun and we could feel how much he loves all the beauty of the island. Thank you CJM Stables for getting us in to enjoy the beauty of your Stables. Mahalo ❤

My daughter is an avid horseman, who rides several times a week at home, so I felt it important to include some riding time in our vacation for her. I found CJM Stables through a google search and booked a morning ride for 1.5 hours for the whole family. We ended up switching to an afternoon ride because it had a smaller group, and we loved every minute of it. Our guide, Marti, was friendly, funny and helpful. She took us on a ride that included numerous beaches, and some really dramatic overlooks. She always let us know in advance when we were about to come across a photo op, and took some photos of us in front of the more stunning views as well. We will definitely repeat every time we visit Kauai.

Everything was perfect starting with the ease of booking the activity. Once we pulled up we were immediately greeted by Jimmy who was full of energy and sharing stories about his life and the Islands.
Our trail guide was Russell who also had the same enthusiasm as Jimmy who also shared stories about Kauai and points of interest along the trail. This trail ride was a highlight of our time on Kauai and I recommend others to visit CJM.

My wife and I loved everything about the tour. Not too many people were on this tour at one time, so it was very intimate. About 8 people. The views were stunning the guide did a great job getting us from place to place with information about each location. Also, the horses already know the way, and are funny when they try to eat any leaves or grass. Easy ride, peaceful.

How strict are they about height? My husband is 6'7 but is 220 lbs and very athletic. We have ridden numerous times and his height has never been an issue. However, I see they have a max height of 6'3...
Written November 14, 2021
As the others have said I would call them and inquire. I believe wt is more a factor the height.

How rough is the dirt road? Is it passable in a low clearance rental car?
Written February 1, 2020
Do you recommand this for advanced riders? I don't wanna go only slow in a beginner group for 2.5 hrs :-)

How strict are they on the weight/height limit? My husband is 5'10" 220lbs which puts him in the "red" region on their chart but if he were 5'11" he would be in the green section. He is an athletic guy with a lot of muscle weight. Will they question this and ask to weigh/measure him?
Written May 16, 2019
Hi, I’m not really sure how strict they are regarding weight. I know they mention on their website they could weigh you if necessary but they never weighed anyone in our group. I believe it’s a safety concern for both riders and horses. They are very nice at CMJ and will give you some important tips before you begin.
Written May 17, 2019
No, there were several riders who had never been on a horse. Need to listen and follow instructions.
Written March 19, 2018
Do the horses just walk following each other or are you able to gallop and canter?
Written March 4, 2018
I was on their beach ride in a small group of 5 experienced riders, no beginners, and we were not allowed to go above a walk. Their website at the moment specifically says only walking is allowed on all rides. I don't know if they might have private rides available where you can trot and canter, or perhaps it depends on the guide you get.
Written July 24, 2018
My ride (a two hour morning ride, in early July 2018) crossed the beach twice. On the way out, you come out of the trees and cross a small corner of the beach, splashing through the water in the estuary, and go back into the trees on the other side. On the way back, you come out of the trees a bit further along the beach, ride back along the beach for a short distance, and splash through the estuary again. We didn't ride in the ocean (there was heavy surf) or go close to the shoreline, but you are on sand on the beach for a short time and the horses walk through some shallow water on the way.

Is "Secret Beach Picnic Ride" the same as the "Mahaleapu Beach Ride" except for the longer total time plus the picnic? Do the two tours go to the same places?
Written June 16, 2016
No. They are two different rides. The Mahaleapu beach ride is actually a two hour trail ride that winds around the country side and hills, across a stream, and only goes along the beach (not secret beach) for about 50-75 yards before winding up the hill again. This tour overlooks secret beach. The secret beach tour specifically goes to secret beach and back with a picnic at secret beach.
