Our beach ride with CJM was our favorite activity while visiting the Hawaiian islands. Our guide, Greg, was fantastic and a true horseman. All the horses were wonderful and well cared for. We will definitely book again when we return to Kauai'i!

This was the best horse back riding experience i have ever had, the horses were perfect and the everyone was so nice and friendly!. We went as a group of us experienced riders and it was so cool, because we got to trot. The sights were amazing, mountains, sand, water, everything you can imagine is on this ride and it was AMAZING! Will definitely go again on my next visit!!

We arrived a little late and Apryl was amazing. Her knowledge of the island and horses made a beautiful ride even better.

Well trained horses and friendly, knowledgeable staff. The ride was at a leisurely pace and took us through different terrain. We traveled through forested areas, beaches and a ridge overlooking a valley.

How strict are they about height? My husband is 6'7 but is 220 lbs and very athletic. We have ridden numerous times and his height has never been an issue. However, I see they have a max height of 6'3...

As the others have said I would call them and inquire. I believe wt is more a factor the height.
How rough is the dirt road? Is it passable in a low clearance rental car?

Yes— you just have to take it slow.

Do you recommand this for advanced riders? I don't wanna go only slow in a beginner group for 2.5 hrs :-)

How strict are they on the weight/height limit? My husband is 5'10" 220lbs which puts him in the "red" region on their chart but if he were 5'11" he would be in the green section. He is an athletic guy with a lot of muscle weight. Will they question this and ask to weigh/measure him?

Hi, I’m not really sure how strict they are regarding weight. I know they mention on their website they could weigh you if necessary but they never weighed anyone in our group. I believe it’s a safety concern for both riders and horses. They are very nice at CMJ and will give you some important tips before you begin.
Is it just walking the horse or do you actually get to ride?

It is just walking the horse in a line.
Do you have to know how to ride a horse

No, there were several riders who had never been on a horse. Need to listen and follow instructions.

Do the horses just walk following each other or are you able to gallop and canter?

I was on their beach ride in a small group of 5 experienced riders, no beginners, and we were not allowed to go above a walk. Their website at the moment specifically says only walking is allowed on all rides. I don't know if they might have private rides available where you can trot and canter, or perhaps it depends on the guide you get.
Do you ride on the beach and how many rides are there?

My ride (a two hour morning ride, in early July 2018) crossed the beach twice. On the way out, you come out of the trees and cross a small corner of the beach, splashing through the water in the estuary, and go back into the trees on the other side. On the way back, you come out of the trees a bit further along the beach, ride back along the beach for a short distance, and splash through the estuary again. We didn't ride in the ocean (there was heavy surf) or go close to the shoreline, but you are on sand on the beach for a short time and the horses walk through some shallow water on the way.

Is "Secret Beach Picnic Ride" the same as the "Mahaleapu Beach Ride" except for the longer total time plus the picnic? Do the two tours go to the same places?
rosiego
Rennes, France117 contributions
No. They are two different rides. The Mahaleapu beach ride is actually a two hour trail ride that winds around the country side and hills, across a stream, and only goes along the beach (not secret beach) for about 50-75 yards before winding up the hill again. This tour overlooks secret beach. The secret beach tour specifically goes to secret beach and back with a picnic at secret beach.
