We hiked with dog, 4 adults, 5 kiddos (2, 7, 8, 9, 10), plus 4 teens/college students in early March. We started to take the steep side, entrance at the back of the parking lot, but without ice shoes, it was impossible. We headed to...More

The Pine Loop Trail was damp but not overly muddy until near the top. Coming back down the back side there are patches of snow and ice that are slick. There is room to navigate carefully along side. The wind in the pines, the moss...More

Steptoe Butte affords visitors the most spectacular unobstructed views of the undulating Palouse landscape. Repeat visits throughout the year reveal seasonal changes as fields of various dry land crops are plowed, planted, nurtured, and harvested in their cycles. You need no guide, just your camera...More

Good place for hiking. It was a hot day, but in the shade was no problem. The view over the Palouse is great!

I have been to Kamiak Butte multiple times. There are picnic benches, parking lots, gorgeous views, and plenty of trails for a day trip with friends, family, and more. Be careful and check the website before you go because sometimes the park is closed due...More

Great place for a hike or a picnic---but lots of insects, so bring some bug repellent. Beautiful scenery and good facilities (restrooms).

For the area of rolling hills and farmland, it's great to have this park with a forested covered hike. Pretty steep hike, but not long, kids of all ages could manage. Good for a hot day, picnic area is nice. My only complaint is they...More

Yes, we all love those rolling green Palouse hills that stretch on for miles, but what happened to the trees? If you need a tree fix and a nice view of this fascinating area, I would recommend this lovely small county park. There's a 3.5...More

Kamiak Butte is the go-to park to test your running or hiking mettle in Whitman County. The view from the top is lovely all times of the year. I love the run up, taking the left hand trail. Stop and view the Palouse, and run...More

This is the only place with any kind of shade in the area so there were families doing picnics and many folks walking their dogs on the main trail. You can take the west end trail for a short but challenging hike with slippery, muddy...More

You can hike just part way up and view some of the countryside, which is getting greener by the day. When you come back down, your child might enjoy the playground area under the big trees.

I'd rather hike Kamiak Butte any day over Steptoe Butte because of its beautiful forest, although I don't remember much hiking on Steptoe -- you just drive around and around until reaching the top. Both have great views... More
