Founded in 1756 by Royal Charter of King D. José I, Real Companhia Velha, also known as Royal Oporto Wine Company, has the most ancient Portuguese cellars in the countryThe centuries old cellars of Real Companhia Velha, are situated in Vila Nova de Gaia, right in front Oporto, in other words, on the left bank of Douro river.Over 100.000 m2 stores carefully a vast selection of Port Wines Tawny – aged in oak barrels -, as well as Vintage Port, maintaining the prestige e reputation this house enjoys over 250 years. At the cellars of Real Companhia Velha, in the silence of its vaults, the wine is kept in barrels of noble wood, the work made by coopers who have served the Company for many generations. There, asleep in a unique peacefulness, barrels and vats are lost in time... 10, 20... 30 years... What does it matter! The time it takes for each wine to reach its exact point of maturity. One of our Top Tours, starts with an exclusive video that shows the evolution of the Port since the Douro Region, all the way to the old cellars, followed to a visit to the main ageing cellar, centuries old, moving up to visit our old “Vintage” museum. Finishes with a tasting of two young Ports, white and red, plus a 20 year old tawny.

Had an excellent time today at their port house and celler as a result of our host and guide Rui. His English tour was excellent. His easy going, friendly approach made it the best of our 4 tours to the houses and the great of...More

The best tour we have been on. We were totally blown away with it. We had a massive education in Port. Our guide I believe was called Ana, was just amazing and so clever. Thankfully we had her all to ourselves. If you get the...More

This may sound harsh, but hear me out. The tour guide, Barbara, was fantastic and she answered all our questions fully and had a laugh with some of us. But the presentation at the start of the tour was disappointing, some audio info would’ve been...More

You can tour the Douro Valley and visit three vineyards in 8 hours, tasting a little port and table wine (very little) or you can also visit this tasting room, select from a menu of wines and actually get glasses of port that you can...More

My girlfriend and I have just returned from a tour here and we’re both in agreement that it has been one of the highlights of our trip! We arrived late in the day so we were the only ones in guide Joanna’s group. She was...More

We were a group of 8 and had a tour to ourselves. The young man who showed us around was charming, friendly and knowledgable. The buildings are old and picturesque and we had an excellent explanation of the process of port production, starting with a...More

There is an informative film, followed by a tour of the barrel storage area which is really interesting. However, the 'tasting' consisted only of a small glass of sweet white port and one of red tawny, no others available. Prices are OK, and shipping can...More

We just turned up which was no problem at all. We received a very warm welcoming and could directly join a guided tour (English, French, Portuguese) round the caves. The price was amazing: 7,50€ for about an hour of tour and the tasting of 4...More

You can just turn up there and speak to the guys in reception. It's a little way out of the centre but easily reachable by car (and has parking available).
