A visit to the heel of Italy
Jun 2019 • Couples
This is a modern town where the Adriatic Sea meets the Ionian sea. Stunning location and of significant historic importance. Well worth a visit. Recommend taking a boat trip to the blue grottoes. Stunning! Only take the small tour (90minutes) rather than three hour full tour. It is cheaper and the caves are stunning.

My wife and I stopped here on a day trip tour of the Salento. What a beautiful place. It was incredible to see the place where St Peter first set foot in Europe / Italy. The views are magnificent. We were only here for short while but are already planning a longer, return visit.

Great place to stop for lunch while touring the heel of Italy
Oct 2015 • Couples
The coast road from Otranto around to Gallipoli is very picturesque and worth driving or cycling around. We travelled by car and stopped in Ville Di Santa Maria Di Leuca for lunch and enjoyed our break here, The town is pleasant enough with a breakwater and small harbour for fishing vessels, but the real scenery is the roadway down the Adriatic coast.

The End of the (Roman) Earth
Jun 2015 • Couples
If you have been driving all day, this is likely your destination. It's not really a breath-taking spot but it feels like you have reached some place. The piazza is open and shadeless, and on a sunny summer afternoon it feels like the Devil's Anvil. Find refuge in one of the coffee shops at the edge, or stop in to the Basilica. It's not particularly beautiful or inspiring, but you will be out of the heat.

If there is any kind of festival or celebration on the day of your visit, you cannot get closer than the traffic circle (Incrocio Santuario). The closest parking is on SS275 in a field on the right hand side, and it is over 400 m uphill to the piazza. It is not a pedestrian friendly route, and you will be fair game for the drivers who will see you as an obstacle and impediment in their mad rush to be first in line at the next red light.
